Sven by Donitz
This is the short story of Sven, a regular guy living in a regular town.

I originally intended to submit this game as compo entry, but it quickly became apparent that there was no way I would have been able to finish the game in 48 hours. Nonetheless, I had a blast learning new ways to do sprite animations!
This game was created in Vanilla ES6 Javascript, and needs a relatively modern web browser to play.
I hope you enjoy the game!

The fact that you were the one making the sacrifice to summon the evil monster was also quite nice. But the mechanics of the game itself didn't focus too much on the theme.
Great job, I had a lot of fun playing the game.
the game mechanics could have been a bit better.
A few areas could use some polish, but they are not important, not gameplay wise though (the "Going to work" scene contains a running man getting stuck when runs to the end left, and the small screens before the Spaceship you can jump and the character will go over it, but won't get stuck so it's ok).
I couldn't get the final? ending as I am too pleb to beat the boss. He seems way too powerful.
Overall, great game, great art, noice simple story with multiple endings, and multiple types of combat. The sound effects are welcome and are a nice addition.
This game needs to get a greater deal of attention.
"Vanilla ES6 Javascript" => Now you have my utmost respect!
@thevinter @mrgrimace
The faster you attack the boss the more it retaliates, so it's a bit easier to attack it bit by bit before nuking it.
@metalfox-dioxymore
It was possible to attack other humans at first, but I removed it because I didn't want Sven to seem like a monster.
I think you should add the tip to beat the boss in the description because it can be frustrating if you don't know it.
At first I was like "another hand drawn thing". But then boom! The animation is superb the changing levels via panes is done really well. It's so cool.
And then the gameplay. So much fun, such a great progression of ideas. The different enemy attacks is really neat and the reuse of the base elements such as fire makes for a rewarding, logical experience.
The use of sound is excellent too, great choice.
The story and exposition, with the npc in the world makes it great too. The player having the knife during the action sequences makes it easier to tell which one you are which is great.
Technology. I can't believe you wrote this in pure JS. Amazing. It plays so well! This is the first time I've actually downloaded someone's sourcecode to take a look!
Great job!
P.S. Yes the last boss beat me into sacrifice, I tried! But he wore me down. May do another play through later. I really like that I can see there is another ending via the panels. SO COOL!
I too had a hard time figuring out the attack, even though it was RIGHT there in the corner (for a second I thought it was a broken "exit/escape" button). Maybe you could find a way to bring more attention to the X, for the dummies like me who can't take a hint? Haha.
Anyway, overall, this was a wonderful game and I loved it. Great work!
@yoni @johara-dutton Yeah I should have made the X attack button clearer. During development there was a couple of times when I reflexively tried to click the X. That should have been a sign!
The graphics is simples but great, loved the animations as well, the fact you have 3 different endings(if i didn't missed any other) is also very good and clever used.
Overall a great game!!
If you like to code close to the HTML5 platform level, check out my collection of reusable game utilities by the way: https://github.com/oletus/gameutils.js/ Some of it might be useful.
Super impressed with this. the art style, the animation, the comic book layout. Well done!
it make me think to Comix Zone on MegaDrive ! ;)
I loved this comic strip narration, coming along with expressive animations. The minimalist and 2 bit style makes it feel even more like a storyboard or a raw comic.
The blood animation and sacrifice part feeling make my sociopath side wish I could have sacrified more NPC XD The spaceship part is quite surprising, I couldn't beat the boss, I've understood I should kill it slowly but I don't have patience and keep blastbeating fire key at some point...
Good job !
Cheers!
