Sven by Donitz

[raw]
made by Donitz for LD 43 (JAM)

This is the short story of Sven, a regular guy living in a regular town.

I originally intended to submit this game as compo entry, but it quickly became apparent that there was no way I would have been able to finish the game in 48 hours. Nonetheless, I had a blast learning new ways to do sprite animations!

This game was created in Vanilla ES6 Javascript, and needs a relatively modern web browser to play.

I hope you enjoy the game!

This game is really great! Love the idea.

The comic style was really sweet. I liked the sudden change in pace with the introduction of the space ship.

The fact that you were the one making the sacrifice to summon the evil monster was also quite nice. But the mechanics of the game itself didn't focus too much on the theme.

Great job, I had a lot of fun playing the game.

The art was amazing and I really loved the style. My only problem with it is that the boss was too hard. Not sure if I was doing something wrong but couldn't beat it :(

Pretty cool game ! At first, the graphical style was "meh", but the comic effect was a really cool addition ! The game was quite fun, a bit challenging at the end and I loved the fact that you mixed multiple gameplay styles ! However... Even if there is one human kill at the beginning, I don't find it enough to totally be in the theme... I was a bit disappointing to not be able to kill all the other humans, but otherwise, that was really fun !

Loved it :))
A few areas could use some polish, but they are not important, not gameplay wise though (the "Going to work" scene contains a running man getting stuck when runs to the end left, and the small screens before the Spaceship you can jump and the character will go over it, but won't get stuck so it's ok).
I couldn't get the final? ending as I am too pleb to beat the boss. He seems way too powerful.
Overall, great game, great art, noice simple story with multiple endings, and multiple types of combat. The sound effects are welcome and are a nice addition.
This game needs to get a greater deal of attention.

Thank you all!

@thevinter @mrgrimace

The faster you attack the boss the more it retaliates, so it's a bit easier to attack it bit by bit before nuking it.

@metalfox-dioxymore

It was possible to attack other humans at first, but I removed it because I didn't want Sven to seem like a monster.

This is probably my favorite one so far!

I think you should add the tip to beat the boss in the description because it can be frustrating if you don't know it.

Absolutely amazing game. Stands out . This should win.

At first I was like "another hand drawn thing". But then boom! The animation is superb the changing levels via panes is done really well. It's so cool.

And then the gameplay. So much fun, such a great progression of ideas. The different enemy attacks is really neat and the reuse of the base elements such as fire makes for a rewarding, logical experience.

The use of sound is excellent too, great choice.

The story and exposition, with the npc in the world makes it great too. The player having the knife during the action sequences makes it easier to tell which one you are which is great.

Technology. I can't believe you wrote this in pure JS. Amazing. It plays so well! This is the first time I've actually downloaded someone's sourcecode to take a look!

Great job!

P.S. Yes the last boss beat me into sacrifice, I tried! But he wore me down. May do another play through later. I really like that I can see there is another ending via the panels. SO COOL!

An amazing game, only problem was that I didn't realize you attack with X (I only understood it after literally pressing every button on the keyboard to see if it does anything). Then I understood that the weird, non-responsive close button in the "lamb" frame was actually telling me I should press X...

This game is awesome! Really well done. I love the art style and the movement between panels is a great idea. The animation is very nice and the music and overall vibe of the game is great!

I too had a hard time figuring out the attack, even though it was RIGHT there in the corner (for a second I thought it was a broken "exit/escape" button). Maybe you could find a way to bring more attention to the X, for the dummies like me who can't take a hint? Haha.

Anyway, overall, this was a wonderful game and I loved it. Great work!

@yoni @johara-dutton Yeah I should have made the X attack button clearer. During development there was a couple of times when I reflexively tried to click the X. That should have been a sign!

Loved the graphics, audio, and storytelling. This game absolutely killed it for me. Amazing job! I think the x control could've been stressed a bit more and the web version had flickering, don't know if that's an issue for all versions. But besides that, I have nothing complain about. Well done!

I loved the idea, though i don't think it was a good use of the theme.
The graphics is simples but great, loved the animations as well, the fact you have 3 different endings(if i didn't missed any other) is also very good and clever used.

The entire game being framed in a comic was awesome, Sven had one hell of a day. Managed to beat the boss too. While the gameplay was great, the theme was bit tacked on. Awesome entry regardless.

Very cool! I was just thinking I did not see a good storytelling game yet, and boom, here it is. The storytelling and switching of mechanics are great, and so is the choice of music. Also, the controls are really tight, I think a lot of lack in this departement, but you've nailed it. After trying 8 times to beat the boss I got what to do, and I got the link with the theme.

Overall a great game!!

@banjoduarte Thank you! I originally started working in ms paint, but I then found a program called "piskel" which I used to get frame-by-frame animation + onion skin. Still looking for even better alternatives which also support multiple animations per file.

Best game I've seen in this Ludum Dare so far. Putting the game in comic book panels is genius. Overall the art direction is great, I like the three-color color scheme with all the animations with a hand-drawn crisp look. I did manage to beat the boss too, so definitely not totally unbeatable. :)

Great game design !
I loved this comic strip narration, coming along with expressive animations. The minimalist and 2 bit style makes it feel even more like a storyboard or a raw comic.
The blood animation and sacrifice part feeling make my sociopath side wish I could have sacrified more NPC XD The spaceship part is quite surprising, I couldn't beat the boss, I've understood I should kill it slowly but I don't have patience and keep blastbeating fire key at some point...
Good job !
Cheers!

The only minor downside is that the key to use the knife wasn't written on the game tutorial. Apart from that it's really great, the comic book art style works great and I love how the story can branch according to what Sven does. Great job !

I did all three endings and I liked a lot of things in this game: the comic style, the story, the story that the environment tells that differs slightly (such as everyone running away while the narrator just tells Sven’s story), the artwork, the no-kill ending, the general mood, the constant surprises such as the shmup sequences… The theme is only present as a story element and not really as a gameplay mechanic, but I guess that still counts. A very good entry overall.

The pacing, perspective and mood of this game is chillingly brilliant. The presentation brings me back to Comix Zone while utilizes panels in such a fresh way! Excellent job with this! I thoroughly enjoyed it!
