YES! I also made a game about chickens so this really jumped out at me as a must-play. It was pretty difficult but I loved seeing all the different breeds of chook, so I was inspired to keep playing. I have a pet Silver-Laced Wyandotte - that one is my favorite.

I loved all the chicken sounds in this game- how did you make them / collect them? It really ups the mayhem of the game when all of them are making noises.

Thanks so much for bringing this game into the world :)

@misterstripey Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah I've got a Silver-Laced Wyandotte as well and she's the rebel of the coop. :)

I just went out back with my iPhone and recorded them a few times. All the laying noises are from our Red Star right after she laid an egg. The long upset sounds are from a Black Copper Maran and she was making that noise because she saw a big bug lol.

Interessting game idea for that theme :D I would like to say that those are all roosters and i dont think they lay eggs :D

@wujood I modeled all the chooks after one of my hens which definitely lays eggs. :) I also spent way too much time researching the different breeds hahaha.

I don't understand their motivation... Do they want their eggs to get fried? It is like... (no don't go there...)

Anyways, it was surprisingly fun. Really enjoyed the sounds getting more chaotic when they started to gather :)

I'm so bad at this game :D It's really fun (and frustrating :D). The graphics are simple but sufficient, and it overall fits the theme nicely. Love that the sound effects and inspiration came from your own chickens! :D
🎤 Schu
04. Dec 2017 · 21:32 UTC
@krasse The chickens don't want you to waste their eggs and for whatever reason all you have to catch them is a permanently hot frying pan. :D Hopefully nobody minds some egg shell in their fried eggs! And don't worry because there aren't any roosters with them so the eggs are all unfertilized.

Cute way to kill some time. Had some fun frying eggs. The difficulty curb was inconsistent, depending on if the first few are placed close to the middle or far apart and if the chickens decide to lay in salvos. The audio was appropriate, but I had to turn it down after a while. I like that you used your own chickens for the sounds. I used my dog's squeaky toy for SFX in another game jam (xkcd Game Jam).

My Compo game is over here, if you want to have a look. It's not as "Animal Friendly" as yours but they are evil cyborg squirrels so it's ok :-P https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/squirrel-puncher-4000

Great game! The mechanic is simple but it's the little things that really make it sing. I like the fact that you get a little pre-warning before the eggs drop and the unlock mechanic had be go back and play again to see if I could get them all. I'm not sure why the chickens are happy that you're eating there eggs though!
The sounds fit the game well and the art style was nice. Great job!
high score was only 76 and I unlocked all but 3 of the chickens.

@potti If you've got the yard space and dedication to take care of them they're amazing pets! I really do love everything about them. The weird noises that they make, the way they run around, and the fact that they often lay an egg every day all make me very happy to have them. Chickens are dope. :) Thanks for playing.

Really well done. I fried 62 eggs. I was running into an issue with the web version where I was moving the mouse pointer all the way off the side of the viewport and temporarily losing control of the frying pan, this wouldn't be an issue full-screen though so I'm not docking you any points for it. Super polished and the theme is original.
05. Dec 2017 · 18:17 UTC
The core concept is nothing new or interesting, and it is annoying to lose control when leaving the game screen. The sounds get very annoying after a while.

When I saw this game I was like "Collectible chooks? Sign me up!"

Really cute little game. I have no idea how you made the sounds so accurate LOL! Did you record your own chooks? All the different breeds are both adorable and accurate. All in all it's a classic game with a unique theme, laced with great art and sounds. Great job!

@sholf Thank you for playing! I'm really glad you liked it so much. I especially appreciate the praise on breed accuracy hahaha I spent a solid couple hours looking up the different breeds and making sure the colors were close enough. Yeah the laying sounds are all from our Red Star and the noise that happens when you drop an egg is from our Black Copper Maran. :)

Ok first impression is that the artstyle is close to something funny. Yeah, the idea is fun so you could definitely make the design funny too. :musical_note:**"Push it to the limit"**:musical_note:
Even the music could be "stupid" (in the good way).
Like someone else said above the animation before they lay is the instinctive touch that make things a bit "predictible". Nice touch.
It was actually really challenging, liked the idea.

Lots of great little touches in this. I like that there's an animation tell you have to watch for to predict the next wave of eggs, while also splitting your attention with the field. The fact that there are actually different varieties of chickens (and that you can see which ones you've "unlocked") adds a ton of flavor and even a sense of progression. Good work!

Hands down, the best game i've played so far. The "meet the chooks" reminds me of the tf2 ads even though its completely unrelated but it setup an expectation which was well met. i got around 110 so far before i died laughing at the sound track.

I had a "Petterson and Findus" game (don't know if it's a thing in english speaking countrys) when I was a kid, where one of the mini games was exactly this! The difference was you had to collect them in some sort of bag and not frie those eggs right away!

Anyways it's simple and it's so much fun, thanks for bringing back of memories and this game! :-)

This is a pretty interesting game. However, there are some concepts in the game that I didn't like. Even though the sound effects were pretty realistic, they got repetitive very quick. Perhaps you can create two soundeffects for each action and make a random generator that randomly chooses between those two soundeffects which soundeffect to play when doing the action. You can also randomly change the soundeffects' pitch only a little bit each time they perform an action. Also, some background music could improve the mood of the game much more. Even though the graphics of the chickens were pretty good, the pan's graphics could have been better if you added some subtle light and shadows and blurred them on the pan. Finally, the gameplay isn't exactly innovative because it is too similar to Pong. However, despite these flaws, this game is pretty good!

11. Dec 2017 · 03:29 UTC
@d-studios thanks for your feedback! There are actually three different noises played each time the chooks lay an egg and two different noises for dropping an egg, all of which have their pitch randomly altered slightly as you said. :) Although because they overlap so much it's hard to notice and because of the nature of the theme (and time constraints) I was completely okay with them becoming repetitive and annoying. I appreciate your thoughts and thanks for playing!

A simple yet enjoyable little game! I think the collectible aspect to it really motivated me to try to complete this game more so than any other entry in this jam. I love how you incorporated the jam's theme into the audio, with the chooks quickly making a cacophony as they built up.

Super simple, yet so amazing and it works brilliantly with the theme, well done sir! The audio is a little bit repetitive and could have done with a simple soundtrack, but besides that, it's eggcellent!

I liked this game, it was intense and hectic and didn't take long to play (compressed fun is best fun, yes?). The art and sounds were very simple but that didn't annoy me in the slightest, i didn't even think about it when the eggs rained down from the sky.

Fun and simple! A bit hard to play in the browser, because the mouse can overshoot a bit, but that is compensatable. The chook who-is-who is a fun addition!
An additional mechanic would have been nice too... like golden eggs that give life, or 'bad' eggs you do not want, pair that with a sound and you got some more depth. :)

Easy enough to understand. My biggest problems were with the cursor escaping the game area and the pan "getting stuck".

The sounds were great, but I think they could've used a bit more variation (a few more different clucks)

Neat concept. I liked unlocking all of the different chickens... or are they roosters? I didn't think roosters laid eggs. My best score was 29 eggs fried. Sometimes it seemed like two roosters would drop eggs at the same time, which seemed a little too difficult. It seemed like the different types of roosters were purely cosmetic, but it would be cool if there were different properties for each (egg drop rate, velocity of egg, etc). Good job on the custom made sound effects!
