Become the Funkotron 5000 and defend the city from an evil presence with the power of Funk!

Dance away a giant Monster while "accidentally" destroying big parts of the city around you.

Tuorial Image (Better look at it):

Tutorial.png Press the dance key when the beat indicators pop up!

Level up your Funklevel to be more intimidating!

Features:

Groove & Funk (Handmade)

Completely procedural Animation (Because we are stupid)

Procedural city (Pregenerated - so it will not change every playthrough...)

We locked ourselves out of the apartment at 1am... Had to get a lockssmith... (Because we are stupid)

Tips:

The bars on the side beat with your current dance beat. Try to match your button presses with the bars.

If you get too close to the Monster you will loose a lot of your funkalicious power and the beast will freak out!

Controls:

WASD: Walk

Mouse: Lookaround

Space/Click: Dance

Or just use an XBox controller!

EDIT: Fixed links - more description - fixed a game breaking bug.

EDIT2: Added Linux & WebGL support

EDIT3: Fixed a bug in the camera and made the intro skippable

EDIT4: Added 2 more difficulties by popular request, this required me to add 2 entries to an array and buttons at the beginning. Hope that is fine.

EDIT5: Put the tutorial image into the game so people get less confused.

That was something glorious! My only complaint is that compared to the opening audio, the funk is too quiet.

An extremely well made game right here.

Love the intro scene and the humor and the graphics are overall very good. Love the animation on the funkotron and the game itself is very easy to pick and play but still fun. Was a little confused first over the beat bars because I did not realise that the black bars on the side was the actual beat. Thought they were just a camera effect. It would also be nice if the intro scene could be skippable because I replayed it a few times and it became a bit boring waiting through it each time. The movement was also a bit awkard because it seemed that you always got stuck in everything.

Other than that though it was extremely fun to play! Awesome work!

haha original idea. very Japanese-like. My character danced through the hill. Not real sure how to beat it. more points for originality/funniness than objective/implementation

Really cool game, pretty graphics and funky music. Awesome intro scene, very funny. I do prefer rhythm games that are slightly more challenging, but it was fun to play. Don't really see how it fits with the theme though.

Thank you everyone! Feedback is really appreciated!

@avon We tried to make the game a bit easier - because usually we make them way too hard

@jtn191 Will try to fix the terrain glitch bug. You are not the first one :( Coding the animation system was a lot of work so we had to make a lot of cuts in the gameplay. We even have another move system we had to ditch.

@antiwrapper I can make the intro scene skippable.

@dirkinz I might adjust the volume levels a bit.

Hahahahaha this was amazing, had so much fun playing this had a smile on my face all the time. It was fun trying to control the character and at the same time click to the beat. But i managed to beat it and it was glorious. I like the humor and the text that pops up after each level of funk. And the voice in the beginning is fabulous. Only Thing i have to say is that the robot sometimes gets stuck between building which is a bit annoying.
Nevertheless Great Job!

The gameplay is repetitive but the graphics for the monster, the city and the robot are top-notch. I really liked the intro it was very funny x)

A+ humour, I love it. Clicking to the rhythm was pretty satisfying, and I love the design of funkotron. Great work :)

:D This game is amazing! So funny that the funkotron destroys more of the city than the monster. The animations were top and the funkotron was pretty funky~ I agree with the others here that it was a bit easy, maybe a little funk decrease when you miss a beat would make it slightly more challenging. Also the funk track should be a little bit louder. Awesome job guys!

Fun game, but the controls are kinda weird, it says W A S D to move, but for some reason it doesn't work sometimes. I love the story though! if 3D games existed in the 80s, this would be a hit! XD

Overall a very fun, and original game, but the only flaw in my opinion is that the controls could use some work.

That was just amazing! Making procedural animations for a game jam sounds like a tall order but you totally delivered. 10/10 Game of the year, add more levels and put it on steam

Thanks again people!

@jtn191 @antiwrapper @dirkinz Fixed the issues you had.

@reggnos I just fixed the collision -it would be super special awesome if you could download the latest build and tell me if its better!

@OursBleu Sorry to hear you find it repetitive! Did you make it through?

@antaresvaldemar Glad to hear you like it!

@rezmo the funk actually decreases when you miss - but it does not downgrade your level

@mr-elektro You have to be kinda patient with the Funkotron since its animations are procedural

@vovin Really happy you liked it!

@michaelgrand Thank you!

I love this hahaha the voice acting and the music is on point, and i had so much fun playing through this. The monster looked great, the funktron's dancing was funky af and walking through buildings and watching them crumble was cool too. Amazing work so much fun !

Hilarious, love it! The fact that the dance is procedurally generated is very impressive!
Congrats!

Wow! Everything from voice acting in the beginning, through blasting beats during the game, all the way to the smooth ending was a blast. I liked how the game simply closes itself in the end. The music was absolutely top notch as well as animations. The monster seemed a bit out of place though, stylistically it sticks out a lot. And the IK on its legs is hilarious. You managed to make me have FUN through the whole experience, that's the most important.

Hehe, nice.

Good stuff:
- Funny idea
- Looks great, procedural animation is good and funny
- Sounds good

Suggestions:
- Not very clear what you're supposed to do, what you're doing right or wrong, etc. I was just clicking a constant 4/4 beat while pressing different directions the whole time, and it seemed to get me all the way to Level 13, at which point it started saying Finish Him but I had no idea what to do :/ I assume there's more to the game than i understood but I wasn't seeing any feedback on what I was missing, unfortunately.

Good effort overall though :)

There's nothing that the power of Funk can't solve!

That was quite funny, but the controls weren't very responsive, at least for the moves. I think it's a downside of procedural animation.

We streamed your game with Danae plays on Twitch. :) Here's a link:

[Danae streams Ludum Dare 39: Day 1, part 2: Funkotron 5k](https://youtu.be/AXdZR4HVHxc?t=49m42s)

This was super cheesy, but still fun. The procedural animation was very fun to watch :) The movement didn't feel very responsive though, probably because I was walking into large buildings too often. Might have been interesting / more entertaining to make the large buildings topple over, then the Funkotron would walk over them. Also, when I watched the stream again, I did see the bars were indeed beating very different rhythms every "funk level". When streaming, I didn't actually notice this, so I just kept clicking with the same monotonic rhythm as the very first one. It would indeed be much more challenging / fun to actually have to follow the rhythm. Maybe also indicate the rhythm with a DDR-like / Guitar-hero-like UI (where beats are coming from the top of the screen towards a spot at the bottom, which is when they need to be hit)? Anyway, a fun experience. Good job! :)

That was super fun! The idea is so ridiculous yet so glorious...

Unfortunately, the rhythm mechanic was a little confusing to follow, sometimes I was doing pretty good without really knowing why.

That was awesome! It was tricky to play with my lack of rhythm, but I did manage to drive the baddie back with the power of music. Loved the music and the animations.

A neat and different take on things. I could never get the monster to follow me or head toward the gap even when I got to finish him and got close, near, far etc. But it was interesting to have to match the beat to gain power and it slowly dropped when you didn't click or follow the beat.

Game was pretty great. Had some issues on medium difficulty cause it was hard to figure the beat out. But it looked great and the dancing robot was hilarious.

Only issue I have with the game is it pretty much has nothing to do with running out of power.

An amazing game here! I think that's the most funny game I played on this LD. I love rhythm game and I'm really happy to see another one here. The plot is funny, the gameplay is simple and works and graphics and audio are great!

The only thing I could say is that the visual indicators for the beat can't help the player to anticipate the beat, I had to listen while losing points to gain them after, which in a certain way, correspond to the situation on a dancefloor, so it's not that bad.

Also it's kinda hard to move in the city and until the end you just walk around. Maybe smoother controls to move faster and more challenge from the Monster could make it more intense, because it made me feel like I was the only one dancing and nobody wanted to do a battle.

This is a great game overall, and I'd definitely replay it if you make something bigger and funkier! Good job!

I especially enjoyed this entry. My only complaint is that the controls, especially the camera, were a little laggy and unpolished.

Whoa! That was great experience :D.
Audio was cool :D.
Cons: need another level, it's hard to "throw away" enemy - maybe use other mechanism for that?

But for me - wow!

This game was a real hoot. It was hard to understand how to time the inputs, especially when transitioning between levels, but easy was forgiving enough that it didn't get in the way. The models and animation were amazing

I've been doing the Ludum Dare for about four years now, and during that time this is now one of my all time favourite entries. I was grinning from the get-go. I love me some rhythm games, and this was one of the most unique I had ever played. The intro was amusing and the procedural animation very cool. Love the designs of everythting too.

Only two qualms. One was that it just closed when it ended. A dance party room or something just to end it with would havbe been awesome but hey it's the Ludum Dare, no worries. Two was just that the rhythms didnt' really feel like they got harder, just faster. In fact to me the first one was possibly the hardest, haha.

I would pay money for a polished, fully fleshed out version of this.

Loved this game :) i couldn't stop wobbling my head to the rythm. It's such an original idea! And it was beautifully executed. I got to level 12, would've loved to see the rest of the texts lol. Good job! Long live the funkotron5k
