Working Overtime by kbf123

[raw]
made by kbf123 for LD 43 (COMPO)

This game has you take the position of a company manager with three employees under your command. You can control their work speed, and you'll need to if you want to reach deadlines.

But this is a double edged sword, since they stress out more quickly when working at faster speeds. Be sure to manage their stress, though some workers benefit under pressure.

A few things I left out: Employees were originally going to be able to come in to work sick (and they'd have a .5 efficiency multiplier tacked on), and they'd have a possibility of getting other employees sick. This also gave the player the choice to send them home, though this severely cuts down on the amount of work that'd get done that day. In the end, I left it out due to time constraints.

Oh, yeah. Sacrificed two whole days to make this instead of working on finals. Smart decision? Probably not. But hey, I got it done.

@james-leib Unfortunately Processing doesn't allow me to export to Mac. Trust me, if I were able to, I would. Sorry. :/

That help window from start screen would be useful later on so it would be a good idea to make it available from the main game view. Also, that resting mechanic doesn't feel like its doing anything maybe everything needs some rebalancing so actions have more noticeable effects. Graphics have a consistent style so it looks nice. Is there some mechanic that allows me to do some work it looks like that on end screen should I tap something?

It felt slow. I liked the idea, though. Also, really loved the bonus page <3

@xesenix True, I probably should've made it pop up if the player hit TAB or something... Resting makes them recover stress faste, and clicking the work button adds to the progress bar.
It's not very fast though, I wanted the work to be distributed among all the staff

@ravarion Yeah, I toyed around with game speed. At first each day was 2 minutes long, but I shortened it down to 1. Still, it can feel a bit long.

I really like the art style that you went with, I don't know why but it reminds me of the old cyanide and happiness comics. I also like the bonus screen. One problem that I had was that some of the days felt like they were too long, but I don't know if that's just because there was no music.

I could only get the stress to go down after they quit, even when I would make them not work at all, but it was still fun to try and optimize with this set of rules to win! I love the cute and bouncy art!

I love the art style and managing the workers was a lot of fun. I had a jam overworking Dana. The bonuses make it also fun to replay. My only criticism is maybe making a better transitions between the days so I have a better sense of the week passing; it took me a while before I realized several days has passed.

@andrew-garcia You may have been playing an outdated version. I noticed the stress issue a bit late, but it should be fixed now. But thanks for the feedback!

Really nice entry! Simple in terms of concept, but really fun when actually playing it, trying to minmax all the workers. The bonuses are also a gread addition, but I think it is quite long to reach the end to try to unlock all different combinations. The art is really nice and fits the theme of the game. Good job overall!

@binarylynx Oof, sorry to hear it

@fullmontis Heh, don't bother trying for them. It was just an idea that never came to fruition.

Love the art style but the gameplay is kind of repetitive and probably a little bit to long

The game screen height is bigger then my computer screen and it doesn't adjust to fit. Then there are some stuff on the bottom of the game screen I can't see like the progress bar, which makes the game impossible to me. Anyway, yeah, it would be great to have Retsuko in a game like this haha. RAAAAAAAAAAAAGE!
