Woolly Roundup by Criggles

[raw]
made by Criggles for LD 40 (COMPO)

Woolly Roundup is a game where you play as a sheep dog. Round up the sheep into the pens to beat the level!

Tip: If a sheep is hiding in the corner of a bridge, walk across to scare it out.

The flocking is a bit buggy as I ran out of time to tweak it, let me know your feedback!

This is great. I'm impressed that the sheep will try to stay together.

Fun to play. As the end screen acknowledges i think whatever you were doing for flocking AI was a bit ambitious for LD. I went in expecting the sheep to simply flee within a radius, but the magnetize to pens and also try to stick together a bit? curious how you did it. The core worked and it had the makings of something but the flocking is frustrating and wrecks a lot of the expirience.

Cool idea and done very well. First level took me 100 seconds, but then is was much easier :)

It seems that there is no difference between the red and the blue sheeps, red sheeps do also like blue stables and the other way around.

@importantcreations If you put them in the wrong pens you get 0 points for capturing them, effecting your score.

(They also have a small percent chance to insult you ;P)

Playing this game has been a really interesting experience, since our games are so similar. I really liked the challenge of having to separate the herd. The flocking was a bit rough in places, but still done well enough so you could maneuver the sheep into the pen.

The sprites for the sheep and the wolf are really nice, but I don't like how the water looks. I also think that making the edges between two tiles darker (like a darker shade of green for the grass next to water) would have made the transitions look better. There were also some visual glitches, where some lines seemed to look through the terrain.

Thanks for the feedback @navot! I'll be sure to take it on board. You're absolutely right about the tile transitions.

The tearing issue has been driving me insane. It doesn't appear to happen within the editor, and I couldn't figure out why it was happening. It seems to have something to do with the Unity TileMapRenderer. If anyone has a clue why this could be happening please let me know.

This is actually really really cool. The AI of the sheep was very well done, for the most part their movements felt natural. This is a really fun little game. Honestly i think you could give it a few coats of polish, add some more levels, tinker with the AI a little more and release it for like a dollar or two. You could probably do all that in 100-150 hours. A level editor and a couple more mechanics would make it worth the price tag I think. Good job!

The bleating scared the hell out of me when I wrangled my first sheep. Maybe add some light music in the background so players expect audio.

Apart from a near heart attack, I really like this game! It's simple yet surprisingly fun - and pretty difficult, too! I would love to see this enhanced with power-ups or different kinds of sheep... but there's also a beauty in the simplicity.

Well done!

@georgebgreen thanks for the feedback! I might just have to turn this into a full game.

@cammy hahaha sorry for scaring you! I did try to compose some music but ran out of time.

Really liked everything about this. The gameplay was fun, but challenging. The integration of the theme was immediately obvious, but somehow still novel. I was about to give you 'meh' marks for humor, but then a sheep told me I suck, and I lol'd

p.s @criggles, for your tile tearing/seams issue, look at this video by GamesPlusJames (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW53YIjhQsA). The problem basically comes down to the GPU sampling your textures at very small floating point numbers and sometimes not actually sampling the pixel you think it should due to imprecision. The only real way to 100% full-proof it is to 'pad' your sprites 1 pixel in each direction. That vid pre-dates the new Unity Tile Map, but it works just as well. The only weird thing is you'll be making, for example, 34x34 tiles for a '32x32' bit aesthetic. When you import in Unity, you'll have to manually set up the rects for each tile to only be 32x32, ignoring the extra padding, but it will look better, I promise you.

Fun flocking game! Adding the colored sheep was a nice bonus to game variety. I was quite amused when the sheep baa-ed "Yoooooou Suck" when I put him in the wrong pen. Well done

Got stuck in one level (sheep wouldn't cross a bridge), but liked it until then. Controls were good, graphics were enough to convey the idea, awesome dubbing. Really liked that I would get a timer, you could go for mobile-style ratings with it.

Small issues were dog moving after game complete screen and not being able to get to the next level using space.
