Crashball by Samuli Salonen

made by Samuli Salonen for LD 40 (JAM)

About the game

  • Crashball is an isometric clicker game.

    1.png

  • the goal is to drop a ball before the time runs out.

  • each ball on the platform will reduce the time you have to drop the ball, if the time runs out, the game is over.

  • We have multiple different balls with different "abilities" and 1 standard ball.

  • You can gain more score by bouncing balls multiple times, or destroying +3 balls with one ball.

  • You lose score if a ball drops out from the platform.

we opted out from audio as we didn't compose the music nor the sound effects, we added them just to complete the project.

About development

  • this one was very rough one,
  • at the start, i struggled to come up with a idea for the game, it took couple hours to come up with the core game design.

  • this time we took a lot simpler approach to the game, this one has very few bugs, which is quite a improvement over our last entry.

  • I think the game turned out fine, i enjoy playing it, which is achievement on itself.

About feedback

  • This is mostly what i am looking from the feedback:
    • How do you like the basic game loop?
    • Do you think the game is too simple / dull?
    • How can i make this game more enjoyable?
    • How well does it run on your machine? (can you post some specs if you're experiencing frame drops)
    • How well put together it is?

Thanks everyone!

*tl;dr: had a rocky start, i think the game turned out fine, i hope you like it. *

It's fun and that is what important! Best theme realisation! You should make it with multiplayer mode!
I want to play it more, other games will be waiting....

It's a pretty sweet game, I had fun dropping balls everywhere seeing what would happen. About making it more enjoyable: the game rules are not very intuitive and it didn't feel like I had much agency over the things that were happening. It's hard to invest effort in the game because there are so many type of balls and not so much room to place them. There could be more space for challenge if the player has more control and possibilities.

But honestly, I think you did a very good job, just seeing everything break and bounce around is a lot of fun in itself!

It was pretty fun just watching the interactions with the balls, but I didn't understand the scoring system very well. Where are the time penalties coming from? The game was not too simply, just hard to understand. My high score was 249.

A fun small game, takes a while to learn the point system. Only thing to complain about was the physcics got clunky from time to time

Really interesting and innovative. One of the only jam games I found truly relaxing and enjoyable and wanted to play for hours. There's the fun of making experiments to see what happens, the fun of destroying and bouncing things around, and the fun of puzzle trying to figure out a good drop sequence. And nice physics that are fun to watch. As a complaint, I find the "time to drop" does not behave intuitively, or maybe it is buggy. Sometimes dropping a ball makes this bar go down instead of up, so you lose instantly after a drop. I never have more than maybe six balls on the board, so I don't understand how the drop penalty could be so extreme, it seems like a bug. Just wishing a session could go on for hours to a get lots of interesting combo strings!
