The Fallen Prince by TwinGhosts

The Fallen Prince
Story
You were once the prince your father's kingdom. You were once loved by all. You were once the, soon to be, heir.
Relations with your family were always of the highest priority. Everyone liked you. The elegant prince who excelled at swordsmanship and magic. Little did they know that you had an affinity for dark magic at birth. Curious as you've always been, you delved deeper into the source of your Dark Power in search for the origin. It made you stronger and you learned of powers of which only a necromancer could dream of, yet unlike most users of dark magic, you had no intention of using your power for evil purposes.
That is until the king went on a hunting trip. Bandits swarmed the royal hunting party, yet they were overwhelmed by the sheer amount of hostiles. You, as the prince, tried your best to save your father and brother, alas your normal powers were not up to the task. As you unlocked the powers of dark magic within, the bandits got obliterated seconds thereafter. Stunned by the whole ordeal the people who saw the outburst of violent magic did not know how to react and as soon as the hunting party returned to the capital rumors began to spread. Within a day you got put on a trial for dabbling in dark magic. Even your family did not know how to react as practicing dark magic is one of the most frowned upon acts one can commit. You were soon to be exiled. Banned from your own home and country. Mad, confused and spiteful you begin your new quest for survival.
Why did it have to be this way, you only tried to save what was dear to you. Why does it matter that you used dark magic when you used it for a purpose that is good and clear?
After years of hardships, training and searching for an answer, you came to the conclusion that the root cause of this problem is the Kingdom itself. The people, the ruling class, everyone... is responsible for this outcome. You paid them with your loyalty, now it is time for them to pay you back.

About the Jam
Solo Entry... This LD was a lot of fun for me as I had a (personally) good concept to start with... YET I threw my first idea away completely after 20 hours of work. So I started over and created this game. I feel proud of this game, art-wise especially, even though it is clunky at times and really short... sorry for that. The concept was way too big though, but I think I managed to get the most important features for it to be playable in, I guess. Have fun playing it and I'm looking forward to feedback :)
The Future
I really liked working on this project and therefore I will keep on working on this project after Ludum Dare. It will gain a lot more features than it has. Most of them are already in a rough testing phase. - More and varied enemies. - Archers, Pike-men, Knight (mounted and unmounted), different types of villagers, priests who resurrect the dead back to life, and so on. - Boss Battles - Show the mighty figureheads of the Kingdom that throne is yours alone. Fight against fierce bosses and maybe even your own family. - Upgrades - Your army might need to become a little stronger before you march on the Kingdom's Citadel. Upgrade their armor, weapons, skills and mutate them. - Upgrade your character and gain more skills while upgrading existing ones. - Different landscapes - The Complete Story (as it has been written, but I had no time or space to implement all of it yet) - Better Combat - I mean, it is kinda clunky at times, so it could use an upgrade. - AI Commands - Make sure that your army is doing what it needs to do - **And anything else you guys, the players, want to see in the game

@mtanton Thanks for playing it on stream as well! I'm in the process of adding sounds to it as we speak, it really feels rather empty without them. And I will probably try to make the player not able to move while attacking, so that you can just run and gun through the game.
@youngblade Thanks for playing! I usually make my games way too difficult, but this time some of the hostile mechanics are half-broken at times, sorry for that... I will get to those issues ASAP. Thank you for taking the time to play it!
@josh-bothun Thanks for playing as well. The art took so much time in this project, I wish I had spent a bit more of it on the design and mechanics. But thanks for the compliments!
@darkanice Appreciate it! I really want to make this game longer and bigger as soon as possible so I will get to that! Yeah they do have an effect actually when they fall through the floor, it's gray and halfway in the ground haha, so I might make it more obvious then.
The background was done with basic Parallaxing. Take the X and Y of the camera and take a fraction of the position. So the further away, the slower it goes
@iluvatar thank you for playing and thanks for the feedback. How would you prefer it? Make the camera move a little ahead of the player's direction?
Haha thanks a lot, I love adding stories to games. Sucks that I didn't have time to integrate it well enough. Working on that as we speak though. Anyways thanks again!
Loved that music. Sound needs polish but that may have been because I played WEBGL. Sprites solid. Animation solid. Just needs variety but that could come.
