The Quest for the Mighty Battery Charger by Solah

[raw]
made by Solah for LD 39 (JAM)

In the future, you find a Game Boy like console and need batteries to use it, if you run out of battery, you die of boredom! Maybe you could find a battery charger in the supermarket... :p

Cover.png

This game may look like Link's Awakening but in this game, you wear a hoodie and don't have any weapon.

It was our first LD and we learnt so much. The game lacks of many things, there is a single enemy, you can only do rolls, etc. But it works! We made our own graphics (inspired by Zelda on GB) with GIMP and Krita, our own music with FamiTracker and the game was made with Unity. It was fun to do some pixel art and try making not too bad music =).

Before launching the game, do not hesitate to configure your inputs.

In the game, you only need the Vertical and Horizontal inputs to move, the Cancel to exit the game and the Jump to roll around. Current commands are WASD to move, space bar to de a roll and Esc to quit the game.

See ya on next Ludum Dare!

Solah and Solnak @solah @solnak

PS: Looks like there are some issues with the Linux build but we can't correct them for now. Sorry for that.

Pretty good game but I think it is too short. I liked the boss fight a lot!
Thanks for the game!

I had to give you 5/5 for Graphics. I'm a sucker for that kind of pixel-art style. The gameplay was enjoyable, but not particularly varied (one enemy, one attack). However, it is rare to see a game in which you literally roll into enemies. Seriously, it's good. :)

Good game, if a little short. The movement felt pretty good and the enemies were fun to defeat. It's just a shame that my real game boy battery pack broke...

I'm not sure if this is intentional or if it's an issue with the Linux build or what, but it seems like movement is REALLY REALLY slow - like "a few pixels per second" kind of slow.

I like the audiovisuals (+1 for using Krita and GIMP!) even though it's not the kind of retro I personally grew up with.
Still, the controls just kind of break it for me right now, but I think that it's overall a fun concept!

** What I liked **

__ + __ Musics and sounds
__ + __ Mood
__ + __ Just the right difficulty ! The mechanics are puzzling and once you figure it out you can beat the game.
__ + __ The sudden power cut felt sooo true. It triggered memories…

** What imo could be improved **

__ - __ Graphics, they are not that bad really ! But could be better.
__ - __ Content. The game have very few element of content. They are sufficient to make the game fun and enjoyable but there could be more of it !

** Overall **

Nice entry, fun to play, not much content but I enjoyed the experience alot. Thanks for the game !

Thank you all for your nice comments! For next LD we'll try to put more content in our games, I promise ;)

@nullconstant I'm sorry for this buggy Linux build, I actually can't test it. Thanks for reporting this issue ^^

Nice game, took me a while to figure out exactly what was happening, but I did enjoy myself. Good work!

Pretty short, but super fun nonetheless! Why was the bossman chilling in abandoned market lol. I'd have liked it even more if the boss had some special attribute other than being a larger version of his minions.

Nice, love the graphics and the sound. Took me two tries to kill the boss and find the mighty battery! Awesome Job.

Good job with the game. It felt nice to control, the boss was cool, and you did a good job getting that retro vibe. I wish there were more levels to this game but what you have is pretty solid.

I really enjoyed the retro mood of the game! Great art and music. I would just tweak a little bit the enemies, sometimes when I go to a new sector, there is an enemy ready to roll over me. Great job overall!

This captures the feel of the games you mentioned you were inspired by. The rolling is actually really fun to use as a main mechanic. I suppose, in some sense the character is a pacifist, ha-ha. For a first LD this is amazing. The graphics and sounds you produced are good. The boss battle music did its job especially well. Like others have said, the game had me wishing for a little more content. Well done to both of you.

Nice retro feel of the game, with awesome graphics and sounds. Enemies mechanics are simple, but very innovative and fun. However, adding more enemies, some pickups and maybe creating bigger level would make this game more enjoyable, because it gets monotonous very fast.

Great little game ! I loved the graphics style, and the music fit the retro mood. The gameplay is simple but is fun, and replacing life by the energy left is a good idea. A bit short, but fine anyway. Good job guys !

Like the retro style and the gameboy look on the frame. I almost run out of time, but I got the mighty battery charger. Added to my favorite LD39 games list.

Awesome gameboy-color like game. Completely into this kind of game. I thought the controls were a little floaty while walking but the sonic-spin roll was amazing :). It just lack any sort of ingame tutorial tho...

The game's really short but, as I kinda really lived part of the first GB era, it totally catches the feeling of playing a gameboy game! The visual style and overall feeling do feel a lot like Link's Awakening, which I played a lot (and got totally lost since I only had the japanese cartridge of it!

Controls and audio also really have the feeling and, while there's not a great variety of enemies, you really did a nice job wrapping up the game! And a great entry for being a first LD too!

Congratulations, and keep making games! ;) Good luck there!

Short and simple, it just works.

The boss design clearly takes cues from the book of boss battle tropes. It could have been something more interesting is all I'm saying.

Pretty ok job all in all.

I hated this boss so much... :D his vision field is bit too small, i think he should just use a few patterns no matter the distance to the player instead of rushing at close range.

@dioinecail, the boss attacks when you're on the same horizontal or vertical line than it, it does not depends on the distance. Hope you could defeat it anyway ^^

Nice game but it sometimes feels unfair when you enter the level and enemy hits you without any chance to react.

- The style is super cool
- The audio is awesome

Maybe a little too short, but very good!

ROLLING EVERYWHERE! More games need rolling.

You could definitely expand on this concept, get rolling powerups, maybe another power or two. You've got a good grasp on FamiTracker since the music sounded like it could've come from the Zelda Oracle games. Wonderful art, too!

Nice, love the GB/GBC/GBA feels, was playing those games a lot at some point. :) The game is a tad short, but I guess it's cool in a way, got to the boss and experienced it all thanks to that. The controls were fluid enough, the graphics/sound reminiscent of the good old days, and the gameplay pretty fun. Good job there!

This is a super nice entry. I loved the game boy color feeling of this game. Even the sound design remind me of the kind of sound used by the game boy. Super job on the pixel art. A shame that it is a little too short though.
Awesome job!

You nailed the retro style, music is superb, and although it took me a while to understand what to do and how to kill the enemies, soon I was craving for more, too short I'm afraid! :) very fun and playable
Also, a finished game with even a boss is not easy to find among the entries, congratulations!

Now I can play for evaaaah! This was really nice to play, it had that retro feel and it had good controls. Also, the sound was bang on for the genre. Great stuff!

Nice little prototype you have here! Visuals and audio hooked me so I played longer than usual.

The game lacks variety, but the enemy behavior is interesting enough. It was fun luring enemies to hit rocks or collide with each other. The global timer did not matter much to me, so I didn't feel the global progression.

I'd play post-jam version for sure. :)
Thanks for the game!

This had some simple but well thought out mechanics, and the sound and graphics were really great as well. The game over effect was suitably abrupt, damn that giant... rock ball guy! Hopefully you guys do something more with the game, since it could work well on just about any platform.
