[raw]
made by wwwhizz for LD 39 (COMPO)

Here is my contribution to LD39, written in PICO-8. PICO-8 is a fantasy console, that has 128x128 pixels, 16 color palette, 32k cardridge (which you write). This is my second time participating in the LD Compo.

Story

The year is 3017 Earth is under attack again...

You are the last space pilot :rocket:

Unfortunately, your ship has only one generator left.. :fearful:

Choose wisely where you direct its power! :electric_plug:

How to play

Controls: * Use left and right arrow keys to move * Use up and down arrow keys to select where you direct your power: recharge your cannon, rockets or shield * Use Z to fire your cannon * Use X to fire your rockets

  • Catch powerups to replenish some power, do more damage, recover faster
  • Note that your cannon is more powerful when fully charged
  • The color of the bullets indicate how much damage they do, same for the enemy's bullets.

Update 1.1

  • Edited within compo time
  • All ships now have glowy parts
  • Ships have varying fire rate
  • Player ship slightly bigger
  • Enemies now have aiming cannons, making it impossible to camp in a corner
  • Higher max hp, because of added difficulty
  • Time for new ships reduced

Update 1.2

  • Thanks to impbox on IRC for these suggestions
  • Edited within compo time
  • Less asteroids, more stars
  • Inertia when moving left/right
  • Minor improvements

Update 1.3

  • Edited within compo time
  • now shows an integer as high score, instead of a float

Update 1.4: bug fix

  • enemies aiming bullets are now deleted when off-screen, fixes slowness

Update 1.5: bug fix

  • shield powerup never came due to wrong number of powerups in line 241 (changed 4 to 5)

I enjoyed playing this game. You made great use of the theme and the concept as a whole was really solid. The one issue I had is the moving background makes it a bit difficult to see the bullets when glancing back and forth between the power bars and the screen. Overall though you did a good job with it.

The power management mechanic is nice and easy to use. My main concern going into this game was that it would be overwhelming to keep everything in balance, but you've designed it to be very manageable.

Very cool, enjoyed it. The random motion of the enemies added a nice amount of tension given how slow the shots were, since you could usually kill them but sometimes at the last moment, they hop out of the way.

Nice! I think, need to make enemy bullets of the enemy larger =)

Very interesting Idea. My biggest problem was that the projectiles and the enemies were too small, so it was hard to hit anything (paired with the limited projectiles).

Maybe you can make the laser be homing, and the rocket explode in a radius? And then put more enemies to compensate.

Thank you for the game!

Wow, thanks for the reviews so far!

It's supposed to be hard, people, just like the old retro arcade games :)

Tip: play on full-screen, that makes the background more distinguished and the enemy bullets more visible.

Simple and effective. Dodging hundreds of bullets is always fun.

My controls went weird once I lost my shield, but I played again and it did not occur a second time. Probably my keyboard or something.

Good job!

Nice gameplay enhancement with the choice between weapons and shield regeneration. The realisation is good as well with beautiful graphisms and cool music. The only little thing I found is that the difficulty curve is a little steep.

This game is really my cup of tee!
Very original take on the genre, being a mix of different games and including something unique, the power management.

Graphics are typical pico-8 style, which has a nice pallet of colors.
Music and sounds fit the action well.

My only suggestion would be giving the rockets splash damage for clearing out groups. Right now, it's not very different compared to the cannon.

Other than that, I enjoyed the game!

I loved it! I really liked balancing the energy to each thing. Kinda reminded me of playing TIE fighter back in the day :)

This game is really well put together! The power mechanic is super fun, and I would keep playing just to get a high score. Nicely done!

Awesome game man! Had a lot of fun. Loving that bullet hell aspect of the game. Though i did find it a little difficult to see some of the bullets against the travelling stars. Maybe if the stars were a little fainter or there were just less of them. All in all, this is a great game. Good Job and Congratulations!

Very retro look and feel to the game! Loved the music too! I hadn't even heard about PICO-8 before but it seems a bit hard to work with (compared to unity or unreal) so great job doing this game with that tool :) The game in itself was fun but a bit repetitiv, the waves could be a bit shorter with more "boss fights" (like the big ship coming at the start of wave 3 or 4)

It's great to see more bullet hell games! Also that fantasy console looks interesting, it's great you're representing it.

Game-design wise, Since you want to focus at all times on dodging, you can't really look to the right to see what is being charged. You might use a different SFX for each charging selection so that you know what you've selected from the sound alone, that or showing briefly what you selected right next to the player character. The shields appearing right around to the player are brilliant in that respect.

Also, since the player can only move in the x-axis, diagonal bullets are a bit... annoying. You could make bullets that move diagonally towards the player but once they get close they fall pretty much vertically to balance that. Now that I think of it, giving the player a diagonal shot might be a good idea to make different shot types.

Having said that, the overall feel of the game, art-wise and music-wise, is very consistent, and it is very fun to play. Great job!

Wonderful thing and PICO-8 too! Not exactly my kind of game, but still huge kudos. I enjoyed the graphics and sounds a lot, even though I suck at this game hard. :) Way to go!

This is very hectic and confusing. I am not sure how to play this and how to make the decision what to draw the power to. Also I am not actually sure what the consequences are when I switch the arrow to something else.

The graphics are nice, I like the Pico 8 pixel graphics. The only problem is that the background and enemy ships blend together a little too much. Fewer background stars would make it clearer what to shoot.

The music is nice and fits the game.

Overall a solid entry, just the gameplay needs a little more tweaking.

This is a fun game with an awesome background song. The graphics are simple yet awesome! The background effect...well It makes the enemies hard to see and when they shoot those heat(?) bullets,You can't really see..also it makes you blind. But overall a fun game but a bit confusing...

This is a really well done entry. The tip to play the game full screen made a big difference in how easy it was to distinguish the background stars and the enemy shots. Music was really well done, sound effects were perfect, controls are great (once you get used to them). This is one of my favorite entries this LD. Thank you for the excellent submission.

Great game, although I think the music is a bit repetitive. However, it is a solid entry that fits the theme perfectly.

There is an exploit when there is only one enemy left, so the player can take advantage to recharge. More enemies are spawned when that happens, but I would be a little more harsh with the player to force him cleaning the current wave.

love the music. graphics are nice too, pico-8 games are always very cute and yours was no exception. Found the starfield background a bit too easy to confuse with the bullets though, the shifting power thing is an interesting idea, but in the end i found it best to stick cannons all the time. I found the nervous shaking of the enemy ships a bit weird as movement patterns go also.Anyway had a lot of fun, good job.

What I really enjoyed in this game, is the music ! The graphics are sooo Nice. Everything in this in this game is cool ! But there are so many developers who went with the same idea ! Me too I was going to make this idea but when I saw that allmost of the jammers are doing it, I changed it ! Otherwise, great entry ****overall(4/5)**** !

Good use of the theme! It was challenging to juggles between power needs, atempting to avoid shoots while charging the shield, or charging the rocket to prevent proliferation of ennemies. The repetitive music do the job for the mood, and it was fun, even if I barely reach the poor score of 675, because I'm bad. Well done!

Really nice game with original approach to the theme. Graphics and music looks nice and creates awesome mood. The only think that could be better is that enemies are too small, which makes them really hard to hit. Great Job!

This is such a cool little retro feeling game that I couldn't stop playing it. It was very easy to figure out and play. Sound effects were great and fitting, the gameplay felt nice and solid, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The gameplay, sounds effects / audio, and graphics all worked perfectly and fit together really well. very enjoyable and awesome game! Good job!

**Things i'd advice to change** The moving things in background are nice and all but they look similar to projectiles, so making projectiles larger or brighter colors (like neon blue, pink, yellow, green) to easily distinguish them would help.

Wow, I really like this game. :D I can totally imagine seeing an improved version of this on the app store. The sprite work was pretty neat, and the game had a really great arcade-y feel. Good job!
