Jump Squad by Taiku

[raw]
made by Taiku for LD 40 (JAM)

A platforming game where you control a squad of players. But the bigger your squad the harder it is to keep them all together and the more areas you unlock!

Build your squad by walking into other characters and use your numbers to unlock new areas. Get all 7 squad members to beat the game.

Controls

  • WASD to move
  • Mouse to look
  • Left-click or space to jump
  • Right-click to huddle your squad
  • Q to disband your squad
  • E to switch leader

If your whole squad dies, you respawn at your last squad leader's home. If just your squad leader dies, a new squad leader is randomly assigned from your remaining squad.

Nice idea and the controls feel really smooth. Switching leaders is a nice way to control movement.

Conceptually, a really nice idea, I had a few issues with the execution though.

I think having a 'floor' of some kind would have helped with gauging depth perception and the distance between objects, rather than them floating over a skybox, as I felt I was guesstimating distances with quite a bit of uncertainty.

Could well be I just suck though...

This game is hard!!!! :)
It controls relatively well but the level design is a bit too demanding. I keep dying even when I was controlling just the guy at the start.

Otherwise this is a really nice concept that is well executed. I really like how the platforms appear and the look of the characters.

Well done!

I agree with @mrnyarlathotep, its difficult to estimate distances. That makes it especially difficult in the beginning and it gets a little frustrating. The camera movement takes a little getting used to, because its really quick, but one gets used to it.
After that, its really pretty fun and challenging!
I also love the fact that its not just about agility and control but also about a little bit of tactic. Choosing a leader and choosing the number of characters you take with you can be very helpful.
And the ending made me chuckle :D

I would like to see the game with some background, some music and as many levels and challenges as possible. Maybe movable objects that can kick you off or something. Its a really great idea for a game and from this point, it can basically grow in any direction! Loved it!

One more thing. While I did enjoy the game, it did seem to have a little graphics bug. I played the web version of the game on firefox and the floor was more or less invisible. The top sides of the squares the floors are made of hade an invisible top side. So basically I had to hold the camera at an angle, to even see the floors. Looking from above, they were allmost completly invisible.
Running on Windows 10, Firefox.

Thanks for the feedback @mrnyarlathotep and @smogen! I just made another build with your suggestions - I tried slowing down the camera spin time. I added something beneath you (it's an odd circle thing) just to give you some reference and shadows.

@smogen I do not have any issue playing it in Firefox on Windows 10, which version of Firefox are you using?

I had a bug just after I got the first member.
I've died, and when I was back, the second member was gone, and the next platform was not been created.
but a really nice game...

I use Firefox 57.0.1 (64-Bit).
If there is any more information I can provide to help you find the bug, please let me know. I'll be glad to help.

The thing in the bottom of the world really helps though. Well done!

Great game, but it was hard for me to get used to the controls. It's just me though. I managed to get to the first star, but after that, the dude started to dance, and then i fell off.

@seththefirst if a guy dies you have to go get him again, and there are markers you have to pick up to spawn the next platform. The spinning numbers are how many guys you need to have to unlock.

@gulyasarni66 the star is the end game, so i think you beat it? or you got it without getting a big squad first?

Really hard game! But it is still enjoyable. I like the graphics and some cool details like the tweeners. Thanks for the game and congrats :D

The game is a lot of fun! I liked the unforgiving penalties for any mistakes, but you could perhaps introduce some more interesting mechanisms. For example, make the platforms a bit eaiser to jump onto by perhaps making them bigger, and then have springs, wind zones and some other physics based elements in the game. But this is just a thought. The graphics are amazing! Great work!

The idea is simple and good, but the jumping mechanic was too difficult for me. The best part of the game was the minecraft like animations.

Ooof. That's a brutal game you got there. I love the characters, but other than that... 3D platforming? With no proper shadows for guidance? Maaaaan. Still, the platforming feels responsive, though I can't even get past getting 3 people. A nice game, in the end, though you might want to adjust the difficulty curve a bit!

A bit sad that there weren't any sound effects, jumping in silence is a tensious thing.

Also sometimes unresponcive controls turned me away, yeah i got that you wanted to make them jump less height and speed the less your lift off velocity is, but that doesn't make it feel right when low height and full height velocity difference is a split second...

I had a hard time playing this game which was sad because I was looking forward to building up the squad and checking out that mechanic. I kept dying jumping towards the 3rd platform. It was too high and I kept going through it. The camera is a little too sensitive, especially for a platformer. This game has potential, hope you keep at it.

The jump feels very strange. Also chaining together precision jumps may work in 2D, but in 3D it's absolutely dreadful.
