Keyboard Cats by sungk

[raw]
made by sungk for LD 40 (JAM)

The deadline for your essay is coming up so it's up to you to type enough to reach the required character count.

But watch out, your regular cat visitors will come knocking on your door, begging to lazily chill in your room.

They also want your attention every minute so you gotta switch between typing and petting.

Can you finish your essay and keep the cats happy at the same time?

I can see this game very heavily based upon real life XD. I love it! The only thing was that after letting a cat in the room, if I kept walking forward I managed to get stuck outside the room...It was quite funny though

I hate getting interrupted and cats drive me nuts, so this game was not catered to me in any way LOL. However, it's smooth and fleshed out, the graphics are nice, and theme is literally 100% dead on. The more you have, the worse it is!

I do not really understand if there is an end, I gave up at 3000 characters ^^' Cool game, which is different to the others I could play, and that is a great thing. But I thing the document the character was writting is quite ununderstandable ^^' I think it looks like that : "sldkjfghlsdkjfhglsdkjfhglsdkjfhglksdjhfglksjdhfglksjdhflks" x)

Cool game ! Keep coding :)

Very funny game and you can tell this has roots from real life. The only criticism I have is that it felt a bit repetitive and at some points, I was literally just tapping the keyboard. An animated screen with characters would be a nice touch.

CATS EVERYWHERE
very enjoyable, and funny! I wish the typing was a required sentence, or it showed what you were typing, to give it some difficulty. Really liked it though!

This was really funny for the first few minutes, but I got kind of bored at around 1300 characters because I wasn't sure how long it would go and there wasn't much change in gameplay. I'd have two potential suggestions:
- Either make the game shorter, or put in more variation to keep the player entertained (e.g. introduce different types of cats that need to be petted in different ways, or different tasks to type the essay).
- Make it possible to lose. Right now, it seems like you beat the game without petting the cats, so there's not much motivation to actually pet them. With a few changes, I can imagine this being a really fun hectic game where you have to multitask between lots of cats.

I really liked the cat sprites and sound effects, and the polish was also quite good (like the hearts that appear on the cats), but I would have liked a little more variation in gameplay. Overall, nice work!

I'm still scared of all those cats looking at me, hahaha! I liked the concept and the mix of aesthetic styles. Congratulations for the game.

Ainda estou com medo de todos aqueles gatos olhando para mim, hahaha! Gostei do conceito e da mistura de estilos estéticos. Parabéns pelo jogo. :flag_br:

Liked the graphics. The pixel cats in 3D worked pretty well. Is there an end or lose condiition? I kind of just kept getting cats and typing without worrying about the cats.

@strega Thanks for the review! Yes, there is an ending. There are 16 cats in total.

Hi there, cat-game person! :) I also wasn't sure how long it runs. I love the sprite cats, the sounds, the models, sounds and the setting. Good job! :) Check our cat game :)

Fun and cute game, but I must agree with some of the other commenters that it did start to drag on after awhile. I think part of that is that the typing isn't very engaging, even though petting the cats is satisfying. Very interesting idea though, so I'm happy to have experienced it!

It was pretty fun, I got really nervous after I noticed that all of the cats were constantly staring at me (A lot like my own cat right now). I didn't have the heart to let any of them down so I never found out what happens when you don't pet them! I wish that there was a sound the moment they wanted more pets so I'd know when to get up. Also I wish I was surrounded by cats while writing essays in college :'-)

Like the art style, the blend between the 3D models and the 2D cats is cool. I would have liked if the cats were a little more intrusive to what you were doing - I felt like I could just sit there and hit the keyboard until the door knocked and then just click away at everything in between. That said, I did give up at around 3000 words.

Funny game concept though, enjoyed it. Nice job.

I have a question. In this game we can lose? Because I have 3347 letters of
essay and I'm don't petting them for long. But the game is really funny. Good entry! good luck! ;)

@falak Thanks for the review! To answer your question, there's no losing screen that restarts or stops the game. The ending just tells you if you pet the cats enough when you finish the essay.

Pretty funny game. I liked the sprite variety and I lol'd when I saw the 4th cat's design. There was also another cat that sounded a bit like a goat(?) when petted that caught me off guard. It definitely would've been nice to see what the word count to win was because I had a similar experience as the other posters here. I like the idea but just needs 1 more layer on top to solidify it.
