I'm not here by Jiri Hysek

[raw]
made by Jiri Hysek for LD 40 (COMPO)

Description: A stealth puzzle top-down game, where you are trying to not been spotted while stealing all the coins. There are guards who can hear you so be as quiet as possible. Unfortunatelly more coins you have, more noise walking emits. You can be smart and lure guards by making noise in order to get them where you want them to have ... But be aware, guards can chase you all around the map.

screenshot.png

Controls: - arrows: movement - space: make intentional noise to get attention of nearby guards

Used tools: - Godot Engine (game engine) - Audacity (recording and editing sound effects) - Bosca Ceoil (music) - Gimp (graphics)

Notes: - I find it quite challenging, if I had more time, I would definitely balance difficulty better.. - mac version should be fine but I had no time to test versions for all other platforms ("they" said it works fine though:) - It's my first Ludum Dare and I'm totally enjoying it!

Completed all three levels. Gameplay and controls are pretty straightforward, well done. Only the hit boxes seems to be little bit too unforgiving. And I still hear those noises with the xylophone track in my head when I'm typing this (It's not that they are bad, but I feel like I'm after lobotomy even I played only for 5 minutes).

@rincewind-cz: Oh thats unfortunate, I've done the music about two hours before deadline, tired and looking forward to sleep. Maybe the music reflects my state at that time ;) Anyway thanks for your feedback!

Excellent use of the theme. Unnerving when they start following you because they're inside the noise circle. Well done!

I like this one! A puzzle that's organic enough to allow for some experimentation. The theme was incorporated nicely as well. The audio FX was spot on as well. Wish it was a little lengthier but overall a solid entry!

Overall fun game, I liked the little sound effects and the soundtrack fit pretty well. The radius where the guards seems to be a little bit bigger than the radius shown so I had some guards running up to me earlier than I expected. Still managed to finish all three levels.

Cool idea! Never thought having more money would be worse :b The sound effects were pretty funny. It is quite complicated though I had to retry the 3rd level a couple of times. Congrats!

Fantastic game. I loved how a simple game can be made to be fun.

Very nicely done.

Good concept, fun puzzler. I think its a little difficult to figure out how far the noise travels. Also love the sounds "ah ha"

Simple, yet effective. You reminded me of Metal Gear.
* I am not sure but I think the tiles are incorrect in size. I can see gaps between them. I think that's a visual bug.
* Running is helpful but still worse than walking. I would like the option to do so. It feels slow for me a bit but I am aware it's about sneaking.
* I know there's a visual aspect for detection, too. It's not just sound, but it is hard to know how they find me out in the stage by sight.
* You executed the theme nicely but there is the problem of enemies past the walls coming forth. I accidentally got enemies from the other side of the stage and they did take awhile to get there.
* Nice way of having sounds and the music fit the feel of the game as well.

I don't really need to say much now. This is well done. Great work!

The sound effect are funny. The visuals work well for the game concept and the difficulty is well balanced. I like it!

@fiakaiera: Thank you for useful feedback! Guards can hear you behind the wall, they are aware of source of the noise and walk straight to it even when it means walking over the whole level. I'm aware of that behaviour, I don't know if it's correct or not, but I found it quite interesting :) Guards feels less static to me, more autonomous (even if the are not).

And yes, they can see you when you cross straight line in direction where they look. It means you can sneak behind them but not in front of them. There is no proper field of view implementation though, just one raycast in direction of view. I didn't intend to implement it at first but it felt weird when they stare right at you and do not care at all.

Fun game. But you broke the first rule of the Stealth games: Guards must be quicker than the player. I pass level two by running through it

Funny game. SFX made me laugh. Graphics reminded me of youtube animated series about Minecraft. Interesting interpretation of the theme. I liked to manipulate these guards.

I never could understand their line of sight. Where are they looking exactly? Also it was way too easy to outrun them most of the time.

@kira937: Thank you for your feedback. They can see you when you cross straight line in direction where they look. It means you can sneak behind, above or below them but not in front of them. There is no proper field of view implementation though, just one raycast in direction of view. This feature was not planned but felt weird when they stare right at you and do nothing so I done it at least this way.

@kabalatrance: good point! I'm not sure if it can be finished without been spotted though. It would require to have more time on level design, which I unfortunately hadn't during the jam. But I will bear it in mind it when I'll make extended version some day.

Fun sounds. Guards more likely to abuse the guy than to just catch). Puzzling and manipulative stuff.

Their voices are funny, I heard "hehe" when a coin is picked up. The animations are also quite funny! The game is a little hard though.

Neat little game -- I like the fluid animations even if they're very simple, blocky characters! The noise mechanic is cool, though I wish the noise depended on how long you've been walking so you could creep by in slow bursts. Only other suggestion I would have: it would be handy if 'space' also let you retry. I want to retry quickly! :)

I really like these puzzle mechanics!

You always have to think about where to lure the guards and which coins to take first to be able to get out.
I just could have used some kind of map or zoom out feature, so planning ahead is a little easier.

Had lots of fun with strategizing and luring guards around. Here's my Let's Play of "I'm Not Here" (among other LD40 entries) in case anyone want to watch me fail repeatedly while feeling very clever ;) https://youtu.be/Hh-8vviv5_g

Excellent stealth game! The graphics are simplistic yet great, the sound mechanic is both well implemented and a great challenge aspect, the sound effects are silly and the controls are perfect, though I prefer WASD.

My only complaints are that the music is a little unnerving , it is somewhat easy to get cornered by guards, especially when you have more coins, and that the game is a little short.

I would probably say that this is my 2nd favorite Ludum Dare 40 game thus far. Very solid entry, great job! :D

One of the best games I've played so far, loved the art style and the attention to detail (LD on the coins), very fun. I saw some of your announcements during the compo, was looking forward to playing!

Great job, this is a really fun game that fits the theme very well. You've done a brilliant job at designing some really interesting and challenging puzzles; luring the guards by making noise is a very cool mechanic.

Great game, really enjoyed it! The game mechanics respect the theme, the style is really nice and it's actually fun to trick the guards! If only the hit detection would be a little bit tighter... Or maybe I could properly plan my escape routes :)
