Range anxiety by StubbyRogue46

[raw]
made by StubbyRogue46 for LD 39 (JAM)

A game made in Java. Additional tools include: paint.net, Audacity, Eclipse and Notepad++.

======Description======

In a dystopian future you drive through the lands in your electric car to escape the alien onslaught covering the world originating from the impact crater of the asteroid they arrived in.

To continue your journey you must rely on batteries that you find along the way. Your only mode of defence is your electric laser gun which you must use sparsely to conserve the energy needed for your journey.

For how long will you survive?

This is our first Ludum dare entry and we greatly underestimated the time our game would take to develop. Therefore our game isn’t really as polished as we had hoped and sadly lacks many of the features we had planned to add. Nevertheless, we are satisfied with what we performed and hope that you as well will enjoy our game. //Security Exception Games

=====Controlls and tips===== - Move with WASD or arrow keys. - Hold LEFT mouse button to fire laser. - Use E to interact. You can loot the car-wrecks several times. - The game window can be resized

When you have 500 Joules you can interact with the car to progress to the next day but you probably want some more so that you have some left to start out with. Try stealthing around enemies to conserve energy. You regenerate your health between days.

=========NOTE==========

Java 8 is required to run this game! Download: www.java.com/download/

=========FIXES========== - The mac & linux versions have had their .exe removed and .jar renamed. If you are attempting to play on these systems you should start the .jar file.

  • Fixed bug where game accidentally closes when trying to create new game after game over. This was due to an unexpected null-pointer exception.

You need to have java 8 installed to run the game. If it still doesn't work, what system are you using?

Hi, nice game. Tried to play with, the movement is jaggy (I felt a bit dizzy after a while) and the enemies stuck in me and I couldn't shot at them.

I'm not sure what to do. It seems the mouse is mandatory, but at the first screen i cannot use the mouse to click on ok? In my first try, i was immediately attacked and died, having no idea how to fight back. In the second try, i was told my car has not enough energy. I then ran around killing 2 guys that did not do anything - the third jumped me and i died. So i didn't really understand it, a tutorial with a slower introduction would be fantastic. In retrospective, i understand it better having read the description - ideally, the game introduces the concepts via gameplay (because...when have you read the manual the last time? :D ).

Anyway, it's great that you finished! The mood and the world is interesting, i just didn't really figure out what to do. Sorry!

@brinkhousegames Thanks for trying to play our game! We had the same .zip for all platforms, the game can be started by running the .jar executable on all platforms but I see how that can cause confusion. We will remove the .exe from the linux and OSX downloads.

The game is quite fun, though I had trouble because I could not shoot while moving. And I liked the random map generation and stealth / fighting combo!

Works fine here :)

So, it's a little too challenging - I thought the game was bugged when I spent a few seconds running from/shooting at a runner, and it just wasn't dropping dead. Some more firepower would've been nice to have!

Aside from that, pretty solid top-down shooter. Good use of the energy theme too - having your energy split between your weapon and your vehicle is a great touch.

Congrats, great entry!

Nice entry, it was hard but found it entertaining

This was fun but pretty hard at the same time. I never made it past day 1 after 3-4 attempts.

The monsters stick right to you and do pretty consistent damage, maybe shooting them should knock them back a bit (if you develop this further and i think you should).

The music was good, atmosphere was one of the better ones I've seen so far, and you hit the theme too. It's an ambitious game for a jam, so good work!

The concept is interesting and it has a good mood and music, but the game is way too hard! I never passed the first day.

The enemies are too fast and difficult to aim and you can get lost pretty easily. I tried to stealth as written in the description, bu the camera is too zoomed in, you can't see enough around you. The enemies see you before you can see them.

Anyway, that's a pity because it could have been a really entertaining game. Still, congrats for your game!

Good job on your first Ludum Dare game. You may have not implemented everything you wanted (this is the story of every LD ), but you made a working entry with enough gameplay in there to entertain me for a while. It's missing a clear goal, but exploring was fun for a few minutes.

The graphics are quite good, the music is very strong. The UI could use some love, the opening screen with the arrow key-controlled inventory system is a little clunky. Pressing ENTER to quit after you lose the game isn't the best choice - you want your players to play another round, right? A restart option would be better.

Congrats on your first LD!

Pretty good game, great work. The movement was a bit off and sometimes a monster seemed to just teleport to me. There could be a bit more explanation on the preparation screen saying what those batteries mean.

Apart from these issues I really enjoyed this game.

The game was a little hard for me, but I enjoyed it!
It's a great concept, but I think there could be a little more explanation on what I should achieve.
Anyway, congratulation on your first LD! (This is my first time on the jam too, so I know how you feel xD)

I found this game to be rather difficult but still rather enjoyable. The art was pretty good and the enemies were terrifying! Great job!

The game has a lot of potential. I wish you had more time to polish some parts, but yeah, I don't expect perfection in a game jam. Good work!

Very hard for me. I wished I had a bit more of a view, so the green (fast) zombies are not that challenging. Good and interesting entry.

Nice game but I thing it would benefit from having the camera a little more distant (i felt dizzy with the camera so close to him.

@mrboxbox don't know? Would be interesting to know what computer you are using. It worked fine on my macbook air and all other computers we ran it on. There is a known graphics glitch that we didn't have time to fix that makes the screen jitter a bit if you're close to the road, might that be what you experienced?

I think the concept is overdone nowadays, i saw some thought in there in terms of theme but i feel it really requires effort to make a game like this feel interesting anymore. Building on the concept more, and making the game a little more stable and pleasing to the eye would do it wonders. I do however like the line of sight, that was a good job! -Rubi
