Do You Mind If My Buddy Joins the Band? by Brandon Anderson

[raw]
made by Brandon Anderson for LD 40 (COMPO)

ldjam40shred.gif ldjam40garage1.gif ldjam40_dudetalk.gif What happens when your lead singer keeps hooking up his friends by letting them join the band? What happens when they all play guitar? The more the merrier? NAHHHH.

Two bfxr sounds used and all guitar riff recorded on my Peavey VYPR amp and Jackson RR3 or my Fender Acoustic. Sound was mic'ed using a SHURE SM58 microphone sending to my Behringer XENYX X1204 USB mixer to my PC recording with REAPER software.

Game programmed in Unity using C# and exported as an HTML build. Pixel art created and animated using Graphics Gale.

Created start menu and game over, but ran out of time to jazz it up. Enjoy!

CONTROLS: Pick a letter to generate a random name starting with that letter for the new band members. A random member will then choose to solo. Hit the key corresponding to their name when the meter goes green to score points. If you mess up, you lose a life. You have three lives to live then GAME OVER!

FEATURES: Composed and recorded actual guitar JAM RIFFS and NAILED IT RIFFS Five characters randomly chosen Five guitars randomly chosen with corresponding riffs (banjo didn't get recorded =( )

BUGS/CHANGES TO BE MADE LATER: Last and eighth guitarist spawns below collider and will walk off, so make sure you remember his name! Difficulty is constant and later builds will change solo meters to randomly going green rather than just the end.

Ummm...Do you mind if my buddy joins the band?

Nice idea, was wondering how many people want to be in the band! I also listened closely to the riffs because I also used my guitar in my game :D (not as advanced as you though). Could't quite figure out how many there are, but I do know the same guitarists played the same riff. Are they assigned randomly or sequentially?

New guitarists are assigned with random costumes and random guitars. Each guitar has a different jam and nailed it riff. Eight members will join the band with five guitar and five costume combinations total! (Even though the banjo shares the riffs with the acoustic, ran out of time lol)

I enjoy playing this game. The gameplay is fun, the graphics are nice, and the music/sounds are awesome. Those are cool riffs! Congratulations for finishing your first Ludum Dare! :)

Even if this is your first LD, it is clear that you have some experience doing game dev. The pixel art is awesome. I love how the different guitarists have different skins, different guitars, "jams," and "nailed it riffs" as you mention. The variety is very interesting, and like I said the art style is very clean. The animations are awesome. There's no doubt those lil' guitarists are jamming.

The music is just as interesting as the pixel art. Knowing that you composed the guitar parts adds to the effect even more. I wanted to try to go all the way from A to Z, but from your above comment it appears you can only have eight members join. Very interesting idea, highly inspired and very creative. Cheers!

Nice Artwork ! Love the idea of connecting names with controls! Would be nice to see the highscore after you died, because after you died you have no time to see that.

Nice sounding game! I named the guy Ä and got some funny glitchy results where they didn't know what to do next so they all just kept jamming.

Nice game, love the music! The idea to assign a name to every letter is cool. It was a little easy though. The bar basically always turned green ad the end so it was kind of easy to time the click.

Its a very creative take on the theme. I would love to play a larger version of this, where the switches between the players gets quicker with every 'level' and you have to type out their name completly or something. Making it more challenging.

Wow, this is a really quality game. It's always fun to run into a few you know you'll want to play outside of the jam. This one's one of 'em, for sure! Fun concept!

A fun game, just wish it had a multiplayer mode! I.e so you can play your mates online too! But yeah gonna save this one and see if my housemate wants to play it sometime. I enjoyed the graphics - well done. 8-bit Retro style, and the concept was an amusing one I'm sure to anyone who's ever been in a band hahaha

Hehe, I love how this game turned out. I kept playing just to see how full I could get the room.
suggestions: if there were little patterns/rhythms to when you had to strum the guitar/click the key that would make this more engaging for me ( :

I was very hyped up from just reading the name of the game. As in, it's okay to invite a guitarist friend, and maybe a second one. But 8 or so? That's a hilarious extreme.

The game looks great, and the guitar riffs are fantastic. It gets a bit dull on the gameplay later on, as one would expect the difficulty to ramp up. Making it constant (at least as long as I played, which felt like an eternity) kinda made the game lose its charm. But regardless, it's a submission with a lot of potential. It'd be great to see this become bigger in the future.

That's pretty much it for now. I'll tell my team about this game and hopefully they'll check it out to. In behalf of all of us, great job once again! :whale:

@brandon-anderson You've done a fantastic job on this compo submission! The incorporation of your own guitar riffs is just awesome! I'd love to see a bit more interesting of a mechanic besides timing your button press at the end of a character playing their riff. I actually first thought this was going to be some kind of memorization game where you have to remember the riff everyone plays and then type their first letter when they play their riff.

Do you plan to continue to work on this and improve it? I would love to play an updated version in the future with more riffs :p.

P.S. Love the random names that you pull from the census!

@nammflow I will definitely be changing the way the main rhythm mechanic works. I will add more solos before adding new guitarists as well as the bar will go green for a set duration in a random place. That way it'll add it as more reflex to the game and panic as you won't have so much time to prepare to remember their corresponding letter. Thanks for playing my game!

5* for the audio, awesome guitar riffs. Quite the challenge to get the green bar at the right time. What bugs me is the slow text reading speed combined with the high risk to fail. That makes it a drag to wait for the riffs to start. Overall a nice entry for a compo though.

Interesting idea, though I found that the timing of the key presses and the audio felt really disjointed and made it a lot harder than intended.

Cool that you recorded your own audio for this though!

The concept itself was very good but I'm not really sure if the pattern to choose the next guitarist is an entirely well coded random, since most of the time I would get the same 2-3 guitarists to play. Graphics were good for the kind of entry plus the guitar riffs are neat. In general, a very nice entry for the Compo!
