Fish Fighter by GiovanniBarrottu

CONNECTED2 Cover Image LD41.png

Fishing game + top down shooter

Did you catch the fish, or did they catch you? As you get pulled underwater to fight them off with your bare hands... and guns.

Made this for the compo but had an annoying bug stopping me from compiling. Fixed the bug and changed nothing else (as you can see by some bugs) but had to put it in for the jam.

There is a bugfix version up for download on the itch page. If people wish to play the game without the bug that spawns fish in walls and stops you from progressing then download that.

Started the game and are confused about what to do? Sorry for the lack of explanation!

  • To start, press P to open the shop, then buy the first rod on the list.

  • Press the switch button in the top right of the menu, then buy the first gun on the list.

  • Close the shop with P.

  • aim and cast with the mouse + LMB, then the bar is a strength meter, try to get it to the right side.

WebGL is lower graphical quality and lacks some polishing features;

download the game for the full intended experience.

I can see some really cool ideas, but small issues and glitches are holding this game back.With a little polish and hotfixes, I could see myself playing this for a while.

Yay, the links work. Cool game, although I haven't been able to get very far because I keep running into a bug where sometimes I kill all the fish in the shooting mode, and it never switches back to the fishing mode. Maybe there's some rogue fish getting caught in the level geometry or something.

I really enjoyed this game! A lot of the controls were a little unintuitive but otherwise solid submission.

Took me awhile to figure out how to play, but it was quite enjoyable!

The music makes it a really tranquil experience, and I enjoyed that, even if it kinda felt at odds with the shooting.

I liked it. It's somewhat glitchy, specially underwater. I think that the fishes got trapped somewhere I couldn't see :(. I'm also not sure if I need to hit the far right or the middle of the bar. Concluded it's the far right though because I was getting better fish that way :D! Really solid game, just didn't play much because I got stuck. Also I was super confused with the guy falling on the water. But I got it and thought it was super funny (why opt out of humor?).

The WebGL version is kinda bad (as in general with unity's webgl =/), so I'd recommend the windows version for those who wanna play.

Hilarious concept. Game keeps hanging after my fourth catch or so, and I'm stuck underwater with nothing to kill. It was tricky to figure out that the game wanted me to pick a rod and gun at the start (the text over the player was too small) but once I figured it out, controls were fairly straightforward.

I enjoyed this game. Like a previous poster stated, I too got stuck underwater at some point after killing all the fish. Hope you polish up the game, would love to play with some other weapons/rods.

I quite like this as an experiment, and I think it could become a full game, but there are plenty of things that could be improved and worked on.

At the very beginning I was quite confused on what I should do in particular. I tried moving aboveground with WASD but wasn't able to, so underwater I also stood still and just shot in different directions. I thought that the little guy was the fishing pole's end, so I tried to shoot it out of the water. It took me a while to realize I could actually move and shoot to kill the fish, so maybe a small text pop up for the first time would be helpful.

The actual shooting mechanic didn't feel too satisfying - mainly because of the reload time. I think it would've been better if there was an ammunition system, with ammo floating around, or there would be a set reload time like 2 seconds after the player empties out a magazine.
The fishing rod mechanic was also slightly confusing, because there is no clear indicator of which part of the bar does what. I was trying to aim for the middle instead of the right end to get the highest distance, and it also took a while to figure out.

I was starting to get bored, but when I bought the new weapons and the new fishing rod, the game became more fun again. It was interesting to see the new enemies outside of the zone I was previously in and I like how the expansion of the player's reach is shown.

The good stuff is: the game is really beautiful and creative, and I really enjoyed the music. It's a fun little concept that could be expanded upon.

I like the concept. The animation when you get pulled in the water and the fishing rod trail are cool too. The music is nice and soothing.

I think the weapon system could be overhauled quite a bit. It doesn't feel very satisfying at the moment because it seemed to me every weapon is just the same with more or less damage and different colors. There's no difference in fire rate. For example when I bought the assault rifle I thought it'd be an automatic with maybe less damage but higher fire rate. I was even more surprised by the slugger, I thought it would have a bigger spread but a poor fire rate. Weapon with high fire rate that are not automatic are quite rare, at least in video games, and it feels weird. If I'm gonna shoot oodles of bullets I'd rather keep pressing the button instead of mashing it madly.
The canon was really satisfying in comparison.

It is true that the game is a bit confusing at the start (I didn't get how the fishing rod aiming worked for a good while, and didn't move under water as well). I lost a lot of life this way, but once I started moving I barely lost any. I guess you could tweak the difficulty curve a tad bit.

Another important point : the sound effect. The game could really do with different sound effects, it feels weird to hear a gunshot when you launch the fishing rod or when you get pulled underwater. Different sfx for different guns could be cool too.

I don't really know what is the end state of the game, after I bought the canon there didn't seem to be anything left to do so I just stopped. Is the Blunder the last fish of the game ? If that's the case it could be cool to add a few more fishes so the power scaling feels more important.

It's a nice game and a neat concept, though it could do with some polishing :) (obviously that's the case for almost all jam games).

What a cool concept! You mashed the genres together almost too well. lol I love the upgrade system. It gave players a lot of gameplay potential and made me want to keep going. Good solid entry. : ) Well done!

I bookmarked this game earlier because the links weren’t working & I loved the artwork above.

What I loved
* The Music
* Flow
* Concept, theme & artwork

What could be improved
* Game is a little bit confusing at the start
* A little more polish overal, but I feel like this has potential to be a full game!
* The weapons & their sound effects
* Glitchy under water

I recommend everyone to checkout the windows version. WebGL doesn’t do justice for this!

I think it’s a well thought-out game with a good sense of humor. I’d love for you to try out my game as well!

Fun concept and unintentionally hilarious through what is essentially slapstick comedy. With some visual polish and expanded gameplay, this would be ready to sell.

I definitely like the humor (shooting fish with a gun is a positively hilarious idea even for a vegetarian:P) and I like that your game follows the theme of the jam. Also, the music is really good. Fish Fighter could've been more polished but the idea was definitely solid.

Not sure how the fishing part works as no matter what I do I cast just in front of me so perhaps that could be explained a bit better in game.

Funny idea, and a lot of fun to play. The shooting segments felt very polished and smooth. Good job with the variety of levels, enemies, and weapon upgrades. That's a lot of content for a short amount of time!
The fishing mechanic itself felt a little bit shallow compared to the shooting mechanic. It might have been more interesting if the fishing and shooting had more interaction. It mostly felt like the fishing rod was just a level select button for the shooting game. But maybe that's not a bad thing because it put the focus on the strongest part of the game.

The music was great, and the underwater audio filter was a *perfect* choice! The art was very simple, but the lighting and effects helped it look more polished and finished.

Also, the "tutorial" is very clever. I think a lot of players might not have even noticed the upgrade shop, but the fact that you start out with no rod/gun is a good choice. One thing about the interface is that I wish there was a big notification to tell you how much money you earned at the end of each fishing level.

Love the oomph of the powerful weapons and the underwater effect is really sweet. Would have hoped that there were more varied levels as it kind of felt repetitive over time. UI could use some work, although what you have is perfectly serviceable. Also the fish could disappear in a splatter of coins or something, at least to indicate destruction. All in all a pretty fun entry, reminds me of ridiculous fishing!

Wow the swarming looks really nice and it feels satisfying to corral the fish and fire down the line. Fishing upgrades are always addicting and I found myself trying to at least see the full upgrades even though they were mostly just power upgrades. Just being pulled into the water and then fighting fish is hilarious though and definitely something really unique.
