Tuftles by Zirrrus

[raw]
made by Zirrrus for LD 40 (COMPO)

I ran out of time but the basics are there. This is a 'game' about taking care of rapidly multiplying totally-original space bunny creatures - Tuftles!

Gameplay and Controls

  • just pick an option and then click on the Tuftle you want to use it on
  • SELECT: if you select a Tuftle, it will have a bubble above it showing its stats
  • FEED: satiates some hunger, don't over-feed though!
  • GROOM: improves mood, has no downsides...or has it?
  • INJECT MEDICINE: heals the Tuftle a lot, but they don't like it
  • CLEAN UP: get rid of the bodies

After a while a tuftle will look for a mate and if it finds one they spawn a new one. If a Tuftle runs out of food, it will starve and eventually die, so watch out for that.

Adaptive view size + performance on lousy laptop is a plus.

Ps. Killing all the turtles doesn't end the game?

@mcfish Ha, it honestly never crossed my mind that you could run out of creatures. :D

The presentation is very nice and clean. I like the UI bubbles above the tuftles' heads. Micromanaging their stats is also very zen. I think a little more variation between tuftles other than the minor color change would have went a long way. Something like patterns or names could help me get attached to my favorites so I know who to feed first :)

@maysick I agree, there's a lack of variation. I had planned a system where a child inherits the colours of both parents but didn't get to it.

The basics are good and the game is simple enough to understand ir quickly. It may be a good mobile game if you polish the mechanics. With a little more feedback of the different stages of the creatures (a little hungry, very hungry, etc) so you could grasp a little better where to focus your efforts the game will become more enjoyable on the long run. Overall, very good work.

It plays smoothly, but it gets a bit frantic trying to determine who you have not recently selected and needs attention. A bit more feedback would make it more about the game and less about memory and tracking.

Oh boy, that escalated quickly! Although I don't think it's a lot of fun I guess this implements the theme very well. Congratulations on your submission!

Cool simulation. Audio didn't work for me. Graphics were cute and the UI had some nice touches. Visual feedback when completing an action on a tuffle would help. Some difficulty in needing to select the tuffles to see their stats. Tuffles didn't feel at all interesting as individuals. As a sim it became overwhelming fairly quickly, but the basic mechanic felt solid. Very interesting to just let the tuffles roam around for a bit on their own.

Well, I spawned the whole board of them, so that there was no place for another one. They started shaking, and dying quick enough for me not to bother with it anymore. That's a nice take on the theme, but maybe it could be a little bit more challenging or have a clear goal. Also it would definitely benefit from some cute sounds. Other than that, a great entry!

You did well on the theme!
But somehow else I have missed game playing elements. I have stopped playing after a while with a mass of space bunnies.
For me a global bar with an avg happy / health / hunger value and the task to improve [X] to a level of [Y]would have improved the game a lot.
Also I would have liked to identify a bunny after a while. I definitely would have picked some favorites bunnies and care more about them :D

Was fun to try out another game about "bunnies" making love and multiplying (I went for a similar thing). Fun little simulation, with a few quality of life improvements it could get very addictive. Would be nice to switch back to "select" with right mouse button or have character status show up on hover! Overall, good job!

I liked trying to keep my things alive however it would've been nice with some sort of goal :)
Good job!

Nice concept, but it's kind of frustrating to play without being able to see stats for all of them at once. I understand though that that might create a ton of clutter later on. Also I tried not doing anything except cleaning up dead ones and that seemed to keep the herd alive still, so there's some balancing work too. But overall it was a fun concept and it was fun!

These tuftles remind me of tribbles from the Star Trek universe. :D
I had the field full of tuftles and then all of them died at an alarming rate, so I couldn't be quick enough to care about them. But I think this is the fulfilment of the theme. :D Nice game, keep up the good work! :)

Ha ha, love the Tribble aquarium idea. I survived one population boom and die off, but having to click the clean up button between each cleanup was brutal.

Haha, it is the exact same idea that we implemented, thanks @megabrutal for pointing it. So, I wont comment the mechanics, saying that it is awesome and perfectly fits the theme will feel biased :)

Aside that, I loved that your game is actually 3D it makes it event more impressive: you gone to compo with the same idea than we had for the jam, and you also made it technically superior! Congratulations for your great entry!
