Toast Up! by gwinnell

[raw]
made by gwinnell for LD 39 (COMPO)

Hi.

You are TERRY. Toast-Ejecting Recoil and Reload sYstem. A toaster, technically.

You wake up and find yourself in a strange place. Eerie... With many of your internal components missing. Salvaged for scrap! Oh no! You should probably try to get back home.... (Home... Ahh... Willy's Wheat Farm... the idyllic pastures and solitude...)

screenshot.png screenshot-upgrades.png

Anyway, back to business....

  • Shoot toast by clicking.
  • This will recoil you in the opposite direction, so shoot downwards to move upwards.
  • Popping balloons will boost you further.
  • Upgrade your trusty toaster by trading in energy cubes. Upgrade your:
    • Weapons
    • Battery power (ammo)
    • Altitude (max height).
  • Watch out!
    • The later enemies will go for the energy cubes directly as they spawn, STEALING them from right under your nose.
  • Escape the foreign planet's harsh climate and gravity, and return home.

  • Press F for fullscreen.

Tools

  • C++ using ARK2D Framework, with Emscripten for WebGL build.
  • Photoshop CC 2017 for art and animation (not the best tool for the job).
  • Reaper DAW with ReaSynth VST and ReaSamplomatic5000 VST for music. Drum samples are C64, I think.
  • BFXR for SFX.

Update Note

  • The updated version on Game Jolt is < 1hr extra work after the deadline and only includes cost of upgrade changes. Try that one if you so wish!

Hey sweet game! This is like already production quality, I was really impressed.

Art - Really loved it. The colors all fit together well, and nothing seemed out of place. The weakest part may have been the enemies, which seemed a little too simple compared to how great the rest looked. But it was still consistent.

Gameplay - Mostly standard jumping type game, but I did like that if you waited to shoot and hit something you might propel yourself downwards. I was really quite confused by the coin system though. It seemed like I would often get coins following me and then if I shot something to keep going they would disappear? I did a full run towards the end where I got really high and got 0 coins, which was frustrating so I stopped playing.

I bet you'll rank quite high in the compo! Good luck!

This was extremely well-put-together, fits the theme perfectly, and was really fun to play :ok_hand:. There was a bit of a learning curve at the start, where the gold is trying to chase you but you can easily fall off the screen and the coins will never reach you. BUT, once I figured out how momentum boosts work in the game I started timing my jumps to collect them and that small extra complexity felt really engaging. I'd love to play a post-compo extended version if you wind up making one.

I had to play to completion and purchase all of the upgrades - it was that good. This is one of my favorite entries so far.

Really, really great. Well done.

Really nice game! Reminded me a lot of Ridiculous Fishing in terms of upgrade progression and was just nice and zen. Sounds good, looks good, and plays well. Good combo!

The game could benefit from a little balancing because after the first two 'balloon-stages' the enemies seem to no longer produce any energy cubes(?!) let alone steal them, so it seems the best way to earn is to repeatedly just do the first two stages and deliberately die, then do one big run when all the upgrades are in.
However, the graphics are nicely stylised, the sound effects are fitting, and the music is suitably upbeat. I also like the mechanic where you can risk delaying an important shot to try to touch more energy cubes.

Hey Ash, nice entry. Great graphics and gameplay. Hope to see this one for the mobile soon.

@cakemonitor If you take out the later enemies first then the energy cubes won't get stolen! You are right though, the balancing is a bit off - needed just a teeny bit more time!

@gwineell I really enjoyed Toast Time a few years ago so I'm so happy to see this little toaster again. The game feel is very good, I love you need to have precision to get more energy instead of shooting around . Of course graphics and music are delightful. Very good job 👍

This was great! Super-cute toaster, super-cute..whatever those other things are! I like the muffled 'from-the-other-room' effect you put on the music, nice touch!

Only complaint was having to buy an upgrade to make the ceiling go away. I think you can limit the player just fine using the battery or make up a new enemy that takes two toasts to kill, but would die in one bagel (for example), then the player would need it, but it wouldn't be like lolyouhittheceiling.

Overall a fun little game!:D

@prettylucky Good feedback! Balancing is always hard when setting arbitrary rules and limits on things, but that's definitely something I can take into account for a post-LD version.

I can't rate you because I'm not a participant, but I liked everything, I spent a lot more time than I intended playing this, good job.

Great music and art! The gameplay also felt quite satisfying. However, the upgrade system seems pointless to me. It's not like I master one skill and then unlock something new to play with. It's just "you must have played for x amount of time to win". If I didn't need those upgrades to win I could have finished the game in two minutes. I think it would have been better if you simply had the maximum battery limit from the start and could just go for it. Otherwise those first two enemies sure do outstay their welcome -_-

Wow, just plain amazing. This is an easy 5 star for sure!!

The music is amazing, and the graphics fit perfectly with it. The music plus sound effects plus the awesome fade out effect when you die easily make this a 5 star mood.

I really like the game play too, it's really fun!!

Only nitpick would be to keep the faded out music a bit longer, but that maybe just because I like it so much.

Congrats!!

Really nice game. You created great graphics and music. The need to unlock next upgrade to could finish game keep me playing longer. At first I didn't know why sometimes I can't collect coins. Well done!!

Really well presented game, lovely graphics and catchy sounds to go with it. Great work for 48 hours. The gameplay is fun and it controls very well. OK use of the theme but nothing unique.

Going forward, I think you could add to the replay value with some tweaks, as it felt a bit of an upgrade grind to me after a few plays (I love a good upgrade system, don't get me wrong). The altitude limit was particularly annoying because I was being punished for doing well. Also, I feel that if the enemies dropped batteries (ammo) so that I could keep a streak going, I would be more likely to play again to best my previous effort. Some randomisation in the enemies would also help keep it fresh.

P.S. One of your stars, when it's spinning...looks a little bit like something it shouldn't.

This was great! I thought each aspect of the game was fun and well-executed.

It did take me a few rounds to realize what exactly was going on, but once I got over that hump I played until exiting the planet and unlocking all the upgrades.

This was easily the most polished and, well, overall best-designed game I have played in this LD. The technical background C++ > Emscripten is also admirable. Rating this was very easy :) Excellent job!

Great art and fun mechanic. Took me a few tries to understand the upgrade mechanic. Think with a little post-LD polish you'll have something really nice here!

Really impressive game for a compo! The graphics style are perfect, simple interaction, great gameplay. Only one thing: I found the movement of the coins a bit too slow, most of the times I could not collect them... Overall good job!

Dude, this is really well-polished! :O It also has a nice replay factor, thanks to the upgrading system, which is really nice! Great use of the theme too. It's challenging, but not in a way that makes you ragequit, which is awesome! :O

The look and feel of this game is so charming, graphics and sound really do fit nicely together, and controls are really great too, besides being also really accessible! :D

Great job at it! Cheers! :)

Very well rounded! I am super impressed you were able to get all of this done on the compo timeline! Loved the smiles on the toast and the game play was easy enough for me to pick up on the first game play, but had me wanting to get all the upgrades :sunglasses:

I adore this. The concept is wonderful and something I didn't expect. The graphics are simple but really nice, and the color pallete is really easy on the eyes. The sound is good and never gets grating, and there's lots of nice audio and visual feedback for every action. I agree with some of the other posters, though, that the game has a really low skill ceiling, and the upgrades kinda feel like a clicker game's upgrades more than anything else. If you ever revisit this, making the gameplay more skill based would be really nice. Still, a wonderful game.

This game is really cheering me up! Cute characters, catchy music, and the game's pretty well designed in that it lets you upgrade again and again, giving you the "I can do it" feeling. I ended up reaching the space without the Overcooked but the game's so nice that made me collect everything! Great job.
