Toast Up! by gwinnell
Hi.
You are TERRY. Toast-Ejecting Recoil and Reload sYstem. A toaster, technically.
You wake up and find yourself in a strange place. Eerie... With many of your internal components missing. Salvaged for scrap! Oh no! You should probably try to get back home.... (Home... Ahh... Willy's Wheat Farm... the idyllic pastures and solitude...)

Anyway, back to business....
- Shoot toast by clicking.
- This will recoil you in the opposite direction, so shoot downwards to move upwards.
- Popping balloons will boost you further.
- Upgrade your trusty toaster by trading in energy cubes. Upgrade your:
- Weapons
- Battery power (ammo)
- Altitude (max height).
- Watch out!
- The later enemies will go for the energy cubes directly as they spawn, STEALING them from right under your nose.
Escape the foreign planet's harsh climate and gravity, and return home.
Press F for fullscreen.
Tools
- C++ using ARK2D Framework, with Emscripten for WebGL build.
- Photoshop CC 2017 for art and animation (not the best tool for the job).
- Reaper DAW with ReaSynth VST and ReaSamplomatic5000 VST for music. Drum samples are C64, I think.
- BFXR for SFX.
Update Note
- The updated version on Game Jolt is < 1hr extra work after the deadline and only includes cost of upgrade changes. Try that one if you so wish!

Art - Really loved it. The colors all fit together well, and nothing seemed out of place. The weakest part may have been the enemies, which seemed a little too simple compared to how great the rest looked. But it was still consistent.
Gameplay - Mostly standard jumping type game, but I did like that if you waited to shoot and hit something you might propel yourself downwards. I was really quite confused by the coin system though. It seemed like I would often get coins following me and then if I shot something to keep going they would disappear? I did a full run towards the end where I got really high and got 0 coins, which was frustrating so I stopped playing.
I bet you'll rank quite high in the compo! Good luck!
Really, really great. Well done.
However, the graphics are nicely stylised, the sound effects are fitting, and the music is suitably upbeat. I also like the mechanic where you can risk delaying an important shot to try to touch more energy cubes.
Only complaint was having to buy an upgrade to make the ceiling go away. I think you can limit the player just fine using the battery or make up a new enemy that takes two toasts to kill, but would die in one bagel (for example), then the player would need it, but it wouldn't be like lolyouhittheceiling.
Overall a fun little game!:D
The music is amazing, and the graphics fit perfectly with it. The music plus sound effects plus the awesome fade out effect when you die easily make this a 5 star mood.
I really like the game play too, it's really fun!!
Only nitpick would be to keep the faded out music a bit longer, but that maybe just because I like it so much.
Congrats!!
Going forward, I think you could add to the replay value with some tweaks, as it felt a bit of an upgrade grind to me after a few plays (I love a good upgrade system, don't get me wrong). The altitude limit was particularly annoying because I was being punished for doing well. Also, I feel that if the enemies dropped batteries (ammo) so that I could keep a streak going, I would be more likely to play again to best my previous effort. Some randomisation in the enemies would also help keep it fresh.
P.S. One of your stars, when it's spinning...looks a little bit like something it shouldn't.
It did take me a few rounds to realize what exactly was going on, but once I got over that hump I played until exiting the planet and unlocking all the upgrades.
The look and feel of this game is so charming, graphics and sound really do fit nicely together, and controls are really great too, besides being also really accessible! :D
Great job at it! Cheers! :)
