I wonder if I had a younger sister by fangzhangmnm

The game

This is a game inspired by Undertale. I discovered that danmaku (bullet screen) games is a good media to express the madness of main character. So it comes to my mind that a Syuraba (tension between multiple girl friends) is a good idea for this jam's theme. So there it is.

It is a fanart game. I used characters in three sister-themed animes: - Umaru in Himouto - Sagiri in Eromanga Sensei - Shana in Shakugan no Shana

This game was created within TIC-80 fantasy console. Thanks to NesBox

Really good game! The graphics are good and the gameplay is simple but very very fun. What I liked most about it was your emphasis on story, each little story nugget is perfectly spaced to keep the pace rock solid!

Very nice art, I quite liked the simple style
The difficulty ramps up nicely, although it did feel a little slow to get into
I think it would have been better if I had seen the anime and got the references (didn't take away stars for that though, that wouldn't be fair)
Overall, very nice game, I enjoyed it

Ooh, this is up my alley.

I like that you took some inspiration from Undertale's bullet hell application. One thing to keep in mind is the fairness of each attack. Specifically, in Shana's case, it's impossible to avoid the attack until you get the timing down; this is something you should avoid. The attack should either be signaled in advance, or be slow enough to be avoidable given reasonable positioning.

For a good example of attack signaling, take a look at Iji; it even has a lot of similar attacks to the ones you use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67eLpLhxEPg

I also found the hitbox to be bit smaller than I expected. This is a common issue to contend with (hitbox size vs difficulty), which is why a lot of bullet hells use very small sprite/collision boxes by design.

Love the little flourish on the health bar.

The game seems to have ended for me when Sagiri spawned, she just sat there and followed me; no interactions seemed to advance the game.

I like that each sister's attack set is unique.

Cool pixel art of the anime characters.

The story text intertwined with the gameplay well.

I thought the flame attack looked great and loved the surprise of the giant pencil.

Great integration of story and gameplay - I can definately see the Undertale inspiration.

Had great fun playing, difficulty spike seemed quite sudden however.

Overall great work! :yum:

Cheers!

This was a really cool game! At first, the patterns were pretty easy, but then you started to throw them together... Became really challenging and hard! Story was pretty funny as well, something straight out a gag manga... I love it! And your pixel art is pretty damn awesome, great work!

undertale x harem anime?I love this! It gets hard but not having to restart the whole game when hp is 0 balances the game pretty well.

just like others said it is easy at the first few levels then it becomes more difficult to play, I can hardly dodge all the attack at the latter levels. Good game!

This game has a quiet a bit of content, a story line that ties everything together and a lot of different "bosses/sisters" with their own set of attacks. Nicely done :)

Great work with the difficulty curve! I felt a growing sense of challenge as the game progressed without too much frustration. Interesting choice using Umaru-chan as inspiration. The dialogue jumping in during the middle of boss attack patterns was a bit jarring considering I was focused on avoiding that incoming sword or bullets! The juice for when you take damage was great, shacking the screen + white damage on the bar + healthbar animation was really a great way to let the player know they took damage.

Sometimes attacks are telegraphed and sometimes more rhythm-based. Is this by design? I think I skipped dialogue a couple of times because I was mashing jump...

This is super cute, I like the dialog and story a lot. The dialog progression did feel a bit slow, and I feel like some simple sound effects would have been really helpful. Overall really sweet though, nice application of the Undertale gameplay!

Turns out this undertale like danmaku is a great way for story telling in a low cost approach but with lots of fun. New skill acquired √

BTW I choose Umaru. (Also prordered a PVC from GSC)

This game is hilarious, the dialogs, the moves, liked the hp decrease animation, good thing there was checkpoint load, but I accidentaly pressed "no" on restart level once, because of holding jump key when I died.

Pretty fun game, like other people said it reminded me of Undertale. Too bad that there's no music in this one, but the diversity of patterns make that up. Only thing I would say is the overall speed of the game, which could be a little faster because although the learning curve of the game is done right, the buildup is pretty slow. It's also nice that the patterns are based on the character's personality!

Couldn't really get into (or even quite understand) the story. Not saying it's bad or anything, not just my anime genre of choice. It was also too short to really get
into the characters. Nice idea to mix story and gameplay like this but I think the actual pacing could do some work. I kept feeling like gameplay was constantly getting interrupted by the small story blurbs and vice versa. I think it would have been better if you hadn't completely blanked the screen and halted the gameplay for the dialog stuff, instead positioning the text on top of the play area and still allowing the player to move around. I think you actually did that on few "cutscenes" but in my opinion, everything should have been like that.

The gameplay itself as a bullet hell was pretty solid. All the moves were very avoidable by themselves. Except that one with umm, pidgeons? My brain just couldn't handle that one at all. Unlike what @fireslash said, I found Shana's swing attack well telegraphed. Sure I got hit by it few times at first but then learned
the breathing animation stop and attack timing. My biggest gripe was the hitbox, I would have preferred the the full danmaku treatment with a way smaller one. It's hard enough to dodge stuff on traditional bullet hells where you can fly, whole another deal in a platformer. I think the fact that it was a platformer was holding the attack design back a bit. Pretty much like half of the attack patterns were just bullet moving on the ground towards you and you jump over them. Even this more traditional bullet hell pattern needed to be toned down to be pretty much that...

Goes without saying, the game looks awesome. Obviously could have used some sounds and music.

Good job!

140+- hits. 4 dies. I like it, goes very well with the theme, and has some pixel effects realy awesome (like fire attack, and energy bar). The regulated jump it's a bit hard to control, maybe it needs some rework, just a little. Congrats!

Congratulations on making a full danmaku game, and some cute sprite art! Some of the attacks could really be clearer though. The dash attack and the fire-spin attack stood out to me as needing improvement. The dash attack will hit you at least once before you figure it out, and the hitbox of the fire-spin attack is unclear. Undertale got around this by using only a few colours in its danmaku sections, but maybe you could find a way to mark dangerous areas too

As someone who has two younger sisters, this game is incredibly accurate, especially the part where they grow 10 times as big and start bouncing around the screen as blades scurry under my feet.

the art style is charming, the story is so funny and engaging, gameplay and story follow the theme, girl getting more mad. and more shot is fired at you. I like that it's getting harder and harder(party hard xD), but the last level was not that hard or maybe it was a cut-scene. overall its fun to play thank you for make that game and best of luck.

Shakugan no Shana is a "sister-themed anime"???

This was kind of cool! I found the plot pretty underwhelming/uninspired though.

The story is a bit shallow compared to the rest. And the rest is WONDERFUL!

Gameplay overall is a bit weird, don't get me wrong it's the "good" weird, but it didn't live up to its potential I think. Regardless I totally felt jealous of this MC, which is exactly the point of the game I think. Damn mofo.
