Messages In The Void by Olowynd

[raw]
made by Olowynd for LD 39 (JAM)

The Void is behind Abigaël and Lily.

The Void destroy the people chased by him.

Will they survive it ?

Being Abigaël, use your phone battery sparingly to light up your way and run faster, or to send messages to Lily.

Please don't run out of power. Continue to run. Continue to communicate.

No other explanations, try to find the best way to get you out of this situation.

Life makes no gifts, nobody explains you how to ask for help when the Void is behind you, and nobody explains you how to help someone chased by the Void.

Hey! Interesting idea! The gameplay is simple, but keeps you in tension, which is very good. Graphics and effects I also liked.

@jajo "surprisingly disturbing" it's a one of my goals making it ahah, thanks :).
@surovyi Thanks you, glad you like the graphics ! Yes, the gameplay is very important for the narration but I wanted to keep it simple, I think it's already not so easy to figure how to have the "good end", but it's hard to really know when you create the game and can't do playtests.

I... don't get it, I liked the graphics, the audio but I have noidea what to do, i just kept running and texting and running and texting, i could jump but i dont know when i needed to jump. It sounds stupid but reading the texts while holding down "a" was too much at once. Unless im missing something was there a point to the controles. Is it a resource management game but you have to keep pressing "a" too?

@landberglife (The jump is useless cause finally i find it was too overhelming to have things to jump over). You can stop walking and just read if you want, but eventually the Void will be too close to you, so you should use the torchlight to run faster and distance it (but the torch use a lot of battery). Far at the left, there is a special place. You have to reach it without die because of the void or 0% battery for being able to unlock ends 3 and 4. I would not like to spoil them or how to get them but I hope you will find the better end ! (Communication is the key, also don't ignore screams)
Thanks for your comment, I know the reading + gameplay can be a weakness of the game cause it's hard, but imo it's also a strenght by the meaning it have. Now, don't let Lily die, I've hope in you ! \(^-^)/ <3

It is not my kind of game. I like the environment and the dark aura of the game, also I like the text message thing and how you are telling the story.

Maybe there could be a way to open the text message or lighting up the torch with a key instead of a click with the mouse, because it can lead to a confusion for the player (the player would tend to click for the character nstead of pressing the A to move for example).

Maybe you just needed more time!! :)
Congrats for the game

Wow that was great experience ! The atmosphere that you created really made me care for Lily and each time I got a bad ending, I felt I was responsible for what happend. Great writing that keeps the pace of the story up and makes you want to continue going ... well left  ! Got to ending 4 after a few tries, but it was worth it.
Love the artstyle too.

Also, thanks for your feedback on my game. Our stories ideas are indeed really similar ! Is that a french thing to talk about depression  ?

Good job. Five stars for mood and gfx. Art is brilliant, and so is the story; bonus points for multiple endings. If I had to complain about something, it would be the first few minutes when nothing was happening and I was just running West and replying to texts. The Frenglish was noticeable, albeit it wasn't that much of a problem.

@mrjotubes > I'm glad that it gets you very involved and that you finally got the ending 4 ! And yeah, it can be a french thing, I hear about statistics that 1/5 person in France will suffer from depression during his life. I don't remember the source but it seems really huge :s. Or maybe we are just grumpy people >:[ (cliché). @starlight-glimmer-is-best-poney Yes, rythm was not easy to made, finding a balance with reading & writing time, danger, battery... also I know that I need to enhance my writing skills in English, it's even more important for a mostly narrative game, cool that it wasn't too problematic tho ! Thanks both of you a lot for your kinds words <3, it's important to me and i'm very happy that you have appreciate it, even if it's not really a "fun" kind of game.

Great atmosphere! The game is simple but original. I like the way the story is unfold and the different endings.

Is it just me or there is no Quit button?

Great work!

Thanks you all for your kind comments <3. And yeah @hhsaez I forgot to add a Quit button on the title screen, but I was too lazy to rebuild and reupload the 3 versions just for this ahah, you're forced to Alt+F4 my game, sorry !

This was really well done in terms of creating gameplay that felt like depression and how trapping it is. Its really good to see people trying to focus on emotion. You did a good job conveying depression and we tried to do something similar with grief.

The mood and art style are excellent! A little more direction on what to do in the game would be helpful, but it looks like maybe you're keeping it vague on purpose to try to avoid spoilers...so I see where that can be tricky. One very minor thing. A little more contrast on the phone's texting screen would make it easier to read. Well done.

Great mood you have set up here. The graphics look gore-y and pleasantly disturbing! I think the soundtrack is a bit too "energetic" and sorta dampens the mood?
I like the attention to detail with the phone :how you can keep the screen active without the flashlight on, to see a bit ahead; and how you go slower when you're using a phone(like in real life hahaha)

Great entry!

You implemented french support so I'll give you my feedback this way :
