The People's Army - a lite rock paper scissor TBS Game by Zapakitul

[raw]
made by Zapakitul for LD 40 (COMPO)

The People’s Army is a lite/streamlined turn based strategy game with a rock-paper-scissors mechanic and is played like a puzzle game. There are 10 levels to be unlocked ranging from easy to brutal-ish hard! The AI is almost-up-to-par and will try and hinder you as much as it can!

There are 3 unit types:

  • The People
  • The Army
  • The Dictator

Each unit has a strength and a weakness. The Dictator can control the Army but will be toppled by the People. The Army can destroy the People.

There’s no tutorial but playing through the first 3 levels will teach you all you need to do. It’s a bit rough around the edges but hey, 48 hours is 48 hours! Note that the music is disabled on start-up. To hear my first attempt at Milkytracker press the “Music” button in the Main Menu to toggle it on (or off).

Also note that you can swap units in range of each other!

Levels unlock in succession. Complete the first one to unlock the second one.

A unique game that requires the player to have a powerful grasp on the games mechanics. The game also has nice graphics and sound effects

Took me a bit to realize you have to go to the menu to go to the next level. I kept thinking I was losing.

Otherwise the game was fun, good job.

Felt good getting through the levels. Found it strange that you can stack a unit on an enemy's, however.

That was probably the most fun game in the combo I've played so far. Got to level 8 before I struggled. It takes a while to learn since the game doesn't explain much, but it has some really neat mechanics!

**This needs a multiplayer. It's that fun.**
Congratulations, sir. You simplified Advance Wars and made it fun.

I agree with the opinion of @darylsteak, you need to have a powerful grasp on the mechanics. However, it's simple enough for you to learn. It's chess, it's rock-paper-scissors, and you just have to put the units next to each other than over it.

I can't really say much here but if you want to make this game's better, I suggest you start your design aesthetics from scratch. The "Tower, People, Tanks" aesthetics doesn't fit the rock-paper-scissors sense. It's bad enough that I start to call them as chess pieces: The Pawn(People), The Tower(Dictator) and the Tank.

You made a great job of this and this should be certainly improved.

The art has a gritty, juicy feeling to it and the concept is really cool ! Well done, cheers !

What a great game! So simple but so interesting. If you polish this game, I would buy it and play it for hours on end, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

Woah, civil war matches perfectly the rock-paper-scissor mechanics. Nice job!

I love the simplified tactical, is makes it more like a clasical board game. Securing teritories, controlling the space... Plays like a Go game :)

Awesome comeback! It's a fun game, a bit hard to get the rules at start, but the smashing of cities feels marvelous! I will play it some more when I'm less super tired! We just published our game and our energy levels are super low :D It was a great round though!

Nice turn based game with rock-paper-scissors mechanic. First 3 level quickly teach new player what to do and how game work. Later levels are challenging but with feel fair and are beatable. I like art style, it is unique and sets nice to the game. In overall pretty fun game.

Nice game ! I liked the art. The music was pretty nice too (although for some reason when entering a level it would stop).
The gameplay is pretty good (I guess I'm biased since I like Advance Wars quite a bit) although in my opinion the game isn't very readable and sometimes it's hard to understand what is going on.
Overall it's a very nice game, good work ! It'd be worth polishing if you are interested in continuing your work on it.
