There are a lot of collisions bugs I wished I had fixed. But I'm not very experienced in game development, this is my first jam and my first platform game, so I'm already glad I managed to get something done!
By abusing physics engine it's possible to finish the game with only 9 deaths, maybe less ^^
As with Malghoul, I encountered respawning bugs a few times where I got stuck or could jump over walls when respawning. I think the solution to this would probably just be to lock player movement when respawning, or have them respawn already on the ground. I also managed to walk off-screen a few times, which should probably be restricted.
Overall I like the game, and while it's a little short I had a good time playing it. Good work for your first game jam, I look forward to seeing what you make next time!
hehehe.
I love this game, I dunno why, I played it for at least 20 minutes XD. The mechanic of killing yourself to finish a level, although not so original proves time on time again to be fun, great job.
Ps: Bare minimun of deaths is one, as you need to kill one guy at 2-3.
I used sort of the same mechanic for my game, but yours feel much more responsive... I should train more on platformer :)
There are some bugs, like going through walls and not getting hit by the enemies, but that's no big deal. The graphic isn't the best, but I love pixel art ;)
Although you said you are the first time, but I feel your work is very surprising.
Seems like it's theoretically possible to complete the game with only 1 death, using the triple jump and squeezing around certain enemies. It was fun trying, but I don't think I am skilled/lucky enough to reach this score!
@morriss : it's my first game jam, but I started game development more than five years ago, but never managed to release anything, then totally dropped it for work the past years, and only get back to it recently. So that may explain why you found that very surprising
@mbc : no, that was not intentional at all XD
But that's funny for me to see people playing it are trying to use bugs to finish it with the lowest death possible. It's flaws let appear emergent gameplay ^^
I've never tried PICO-8, is it easy to use?
Anyway, for a first jam, it's quite good actually. Congrats! ^^

I don't know what is your experience in game development and programming. I learned gamedev with XNA almost 5 years ago, so compared to that Pico-8 is fairly easy, lol
What I like in Pico-8 is that you have anything to create your game in a single software, from sprite editing and tilemap to sfx and music. But compared to some modern game engine that require nearly no coding, you need to code anything in Pico-8, there's no built in physics and collision engine, no animation editor or things like that.
But I think it's really great to get things done really quickly, all tools are easy to use, and it's limitations (128x128 screen, 16 colors, etc.) forces you to keep it simple.
Also, I was able to jump out of the end-scene level and fall infinitely... lol. I guess if I played it 5 or 6 times it must have been pretty fun :)
