(WARNING! I ran out of time, so almost no art and it needs some balancing tweaks.) (HTML5 version not thoroughly tested, white impact flashes don't work too, I recommend playing the executable)

ABOUT THE GAME:

Death is bored and wants something to relieve his gambling needs, what better to do than to go to hell and gamble some souls away to the devil?

Devil Slots is a top down survival shooter where you gamble your life away on a slot machine with effects that can either help or destroy your run.

You can get some pretty hilarious OP runs if you are lucky, attributes don't have limits, so lot's of interesting stuff can happen (like having bullets so small you can't see them)

DEVELOPMENT NOTES:

I'm a little disappointed in myself to be honest, I thought I was going to be able to do more, I overjudged my abilities and overscoped the game. The thing that botters me the most is the lack of art assets, I'm no artist but in retrospective I should have given more time to it.

I cut a lot of stuff I wanted to do, like - More attributes - Bonus floors with crazy slots (those would either break the game, or make so useless you would die) - Devil as a final boss - Almost all of the art

But! I hope you enjoy playing it, the game is beatable and it can be quite fun if you get lucky. Let me know what do you think of it, I have some cool ideas I want to try so maybe I'll finish this one day! Thank you for playing!

I spent a fair bit of time with this, found a few bugs, you could decrease most things into negatives including bullet size (stopping me from firing) and dodging (which left me unable to dodge)

Fun game, the gambling system is very interesting. I feel that it would be better if the dice rolls were weighted such that you're more likely to get positive results when gambling. I would always just do the required five spins and move on, as I felt strong enough and didn't want to risk upsetting the balance, and a feel like a better chance at something positive would make it more worthwhile. In return, the risk of future floors could increase to make health a more precious resource, possibly through something like a preset stat increase for enemies each floor.

I liked it. It's a good twist on an overdone type of game. The slots and the resulting bonus or debuf really adds some unpredictability. Would indeed be good if you could have some way of rolling for something you need or betting more life to gain favorable odds.

I played in HTML5 version. It was fun to play. There were some bugs, and not very clear things in mechanics to me. So it was very easy somewhere in the middle where orb was doint all the work, but no shooting by the end after few unlucky rolls.

I really liked the gambling system but I wish there was a way to keep track of all the stats. My rate of fire was so high at one point I hit it too many times then went into the next level with some terrible debufs. A lot of fun though.

the game works well even if not completely finished but it's a bit too classic the shooter with upgrade on sees full on this jam

Although it's obvious the game is unfinished, I had fun with this one. I had too many negative outcomes with the gambling system, I think you can make more times being positive outcomes with smaller number and less times being negative but with bigger numbers, I don't know if I'm clear. The music and feel was pretty good (the orbs moving toward the player was very nice!). With a little more work this can be a great game.

The gameplay was pretty addicting, I found -- especially after getting upgrades! Although I didn't find that the difficulty had much of a ramp throughout each wave. By the time I got to the last wave, I don't think I got hit very much at all. The gambling system actually felt balanced, since you only had to gamble a certain amount OR if your life is <50%. I think this would be a really fun rogue-like game if you decide to continue! :)

Really nice idea and well executed. Had fun playing and the gambling system was really nice!

I think the gambling was a bit unfair to me on multiple attempts! The stats could have been presented a bit clearer, e.g. in bars, but there's definitely something to the mechanic. Not sure if it's just the Web version, but I would have liked to see more feedback when the player is hit too, because I often thought I dodged the attack.

picking up all the little circles on the gambling screen was soooo satisfying to me! Great job! overall!

I love your music! I made a game somewhat similar to this, but I couldn't quite get the music part. Yours however is soo good! I especially love the one in the room with the slots!

Fantastic job!

I see that it's unfinished, but it would have been nice to have some more feedback when hitting the enemies. (it felt like my bullets were disappearing rather than damaging enemies) I had fun playing, though.

With a little bit of added flare in the visuals and some tweaks to the numbers with the slot machine, this could be a real time-suck. It feels like you should be rewarded for attempting more rolls on the slot machine, but that's not the case. The way the numbers are now, it makes rolling the minimum requirement the best strategy and moving on.

Good entry regardless!

Playing your game was really fun though I did not manage to get further than floor 5 :) As a compo, I really don't think it's lacking of art assets! I found the graphics coherent, the gameplay is good, the audio is excellent. I love the gambling thing but I found it difficult to see quickly which buff/debufs you get. There's also some balancing to do of course. Still, you did a very good job.
