Sanity Wars by JoshAnthony1990

[raw]
made by JoshAnthony1990 for LD 43 (JAM)

The Dread Overlord has taken over and crippled the world with terror. Will you sacrifice your sanity to find the tomes of knowledge needed to save the world, or succumb to the terrors inflicted on your mind?

Controls: - Arrow keys to move

  • Spacebar to Cast

  • "E" to use portals

  • Hold "1" To Gain Access to Fiery Rage (Fireball)

  • Hold "2" To Gain Access to Desperate Flight (Levitate)

"Gain Access" means you can't use the spells until you hold down the described keys for about half a second. This results in your sanity recharge amount decreasing. Aka, a sacrifice.

This is a nice retro platformer. I wouldn't mind having a bigger game window though. The browser zoom feature helps with that a bit.

@flying-dog-fish Yeah, that was a gameplay choice I made when I was still trying to induce a terror-ish atmosphere, to reduce the amount of vision you get. It didn't really play out that way, though.

I liked blasting the eye balls with fire, I would suggest making the camera follow a little faster. Fun game!

Fun platformer, I found it a bit difficult to control the character but that was probably just me.

I like the idea of incorporating spellcasting into platforming. The fact that you can choose whether or not to access spells is pretty interesting, it could lead to options for challenges, achievements, speedrunning, etc.

The color scheme and the floating eyeballs add some nice atmosphere.

The controls are responsive, but the relative vertical and horizontal speeds feel a bit off.

There are lots of ways to improve the plain old parabolic jump to make the character feel more weight(variable gravity, variable jump height or fall speed if you're holding the button, and so forth).

Good concept, plenty to improve on.

Awesome little platformer, i think i had the same issue as some people. Controls were a bit strange so, i couldnt get too far. Good job regardless!

I like the aesthetics of this game. The visuals and audio went well together to really set the mood. I had some difficulty with the controls. Making some jumps were more difficult than they probably should have been. Overall though, nice work!

@meenners @mania @jharler thank you for the feedback!

Those of you with control issues, could you elaborate a little more on what specifically made it tough? I'm looking for feedback so I can implement improvements to the engine.

Levitation is really hard to handle with that huge vertical speed. Cool game though.
