An Fhicheall Mhór (Grand Chess) by Artur Hawkwing

[raw]
made by Artur Hawkwing for LD 43 (JAM)

This is Grand Chess—an RPG-meets-chess that will push you to your limits. You will be journeying through a variety of levels with you King and other chess pieces you take along the way. Will you be able to make it? If you aren’t willing to sacrifice a few pieces along the way, you will have a very, very hard time winning.

Controls:

Click a piece—select it

Click on a highlighted square one a piece is selected—move to that square

The places you can move will be shown in red if you can move and capture there, blue if you can move and not capture there, and green if the square is ‘on they way’ but you cannot move to it.

**If you capture a piece you keep it in the next levels until it dies

Goal:

Get to the yellow tile at the end of the stage to advance to the next one. Pass the final level to win!

Good luck!

Chun rialaigh an cluiche:

Cliceáil ar píosa—roghnaigh píosa

**Má gabhann tú aon píosa beidh sé agat sa leibhéil eile nuair atá sé beo

Dúshlán:

Dul go dtí an leacán buí os comhair an leacán tosú. Déan gach leibhéal chun an deireadh!

Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat!

Super game! The music's nice and the premise is cool as well. A background would be sweet, and a checkpoint system would be cool as well. Good job!

Thanks @digitallimestone ! I agree that a background would have been nice, if I do a larger Post-LD I'll definitely add one in. I am very glad you liked it!

And all, I’ll play and rate your games today or tomorrow. I don’t have the time right now to give good feedback, but I will as soon as I can :)

Can we please get a HTML5 build? People are too lazy to download and install. Namely me. :)

@eric-smith I'll see if I can. But Unity kept crashing when I tried, unfortunately

Pretty cool game with a great concept. I would just point out that, at the beginning of a level, it can be hard to select the piece you want to move and the indicator of the pawn is a bit confusing (his "normal" moves are not in red like all the other pieces). Also, a replay button would be a great feature instead of exiting then launch again.
I could not hear the music as I am not in a place where I can havve the audio on but I'll test it back later to note the sound.
The commentary can seems a bit harsh and I am sorry if so because it is not what I intended: I really enjoyed the game overall and really loved the idea of a RPG-Chess
* EDIT for the sound: the looping moment isn't always really smooth but a good sound overall

Good game, really good idea, and the kill-and-use mechanic is really nice!
You could add a respawn system to restart game without opening game again.

Interesting concept. Had a bit of trouble figuring it out, but once I did it was challenging.

Thank you!! I am glad you like it

@wyatt
I will update the write up so it is more clear, thanks!

@link
I completely agree—that’s on the list of features to add!

@vivien-fargette
Thank you very much! I did not realize how out-of-place the pawn colors would look. I actually did that to indicate the straight moves are only for moving, not attack, but I should have mentioed that before. I’ll add that in to the write up!

The game is a little too punishing in restarting back to the beginning - especially as losses are so common. Still, quite an interesting idea. I really like the look of the chess pieces, and the music does a lot to set the mood.

Tried Mac version, but all I got was a grey screen. The music worked, though. Might try to build from source, if I get a chance.

Has alot of potential, but the music; headphone users beware.

Love the concept. Having the pieces move more slowly would have been good; turn based might have been one idea to try. Being able to start again without having to exit and run the game again would have been nice. Overall, a cool, interesting game.

Nice concept, may be biased cause I love chess. Would be nice to continue and polish the game. Good job!

@pellanor @btrotter101 I’m sorry that it did not work, but thanks for coming here to check it out! Unfortunately I do not have access to a Mac to try to debug, but pellanor, which Windows are you running? I can try to debug it, and if I get somewhere I’ll post an update.

@chaosed0 I did not realize that until after the deadline. I’d love to add in checkpoints at some point for a post LD, because you are right that having to restart is quite hard on the player.

Thanks to everyone here for playing—I really value all for you feedback!

Really good concept. But the execution is a bit rough. You should make a quick tutorial explaining you need to chose the piece you need to move. Also, at the start of one level, my peice didn't spwn. I have to reset the game.

But the idea is cool, and the race against the other pieces is kinda exciting.

Nice concept - for a small logical game, which I enjoyed. Which makes this entry quite different, and I somehow kind of liked it.

I found controls a bit wrong though. Especially what AI does. They can instantly kill you while you're not entirely seeing where they will land in next turn - so timing can be quite frustrating in some levels.

Anyways, good job and congratulations of making an entry!

5/5 innovation for the cool concept. I love to play chess so I was hoping to be able to showcase my skills but the game was so hard! Definitely as lot of polish work that can be put into it. Also sometimes I would spawn and a knight would immediately kill me because I wasn't fast enough. I love the holes in the chessboard - they make things interesting - and the pieces look really cool! Nice job and keep developing this!

This seems like a neat game, but I kept dying for apparently no reason. I wasn't anywhere near an enemy piece and I couldn't figure out why I was dying. Also, there's no button to restart on the game over screen, so I had to close and restart the game each time.

Kept losing for no reason.
Got on the yellow square -> lost
Took a rook, moved into an empty square -> lost
moved two squares from the start -> lost.
Had a bishop run through me and didnt lose..

got through a few levels but didn't feel like continuing after having to close the game everytime anything causes me to lose.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It is very useful!

@baktillus @iamsodarncool you die when you are in an enemy's range and it moves to kill you. The reason it seems like there is no reason is that the movement is not shown (a bug I did not have time to address) before you are killed.

Death is not triggered by collision, but by the enemy's intention to attack you. So even if an enemy moves through you, you may live; but if they see you and attack, you die. It is a bit awkward (something I would like to fix), but I had to go with it for now.

Im not sure if I understand the Gane.
In my windows version, I haven't any other piece, and my king is weak.
The game seem very hard like that.
All my square are red, after 6 try, i didn't succeed in the second level :)
The game over pannel with only quit button is a bit frustrating.

However, the concept is interesting and your take the time to make a 3D (2D) Game.
Great job.

I played through a few times until I finally got the hang of it. I found it to be very punishing because you can't tell what the AI is doing. It's nearly impossible to get the hang of anything as the AI sometimes behaves uncertainly and you just suddenly lose.

It was very annoying having to start from scratch every time, but all in all, a good initial execution.

Cool idea, though I'm missing the above mentioned restart option. (I'd prefer adding that before putting in Irish, but maybe that's just me ). There are a lot of ways you could take this. I'd like to see whether putting player on a the same timestep (longer than now, possibly based on the number of pieces) and they'd plan the movement of all their pieces and then wait or just hit a "GO" button.
I enjoyed my time with this, though the captiuring mechanic is slightly iffy - I captured a piece (a horsie), which then still killed my king. Also, the capturing for pawns seems weird, unless that was *en passant*, which I never really got...

Really interesting concept, the music was a good fit and the AI is appropriately challenging. However, I would've appreciated it if the board was in the center of the screen. Other than that, well done!

This is a good game for such a small period. there are a lot of shortcomings including management, but I think that it is still at a good level) So keep up the good luck!)
