Guttula (HTML) by SnufkinsHat

[raw]
made by SnufkinsHat for LD 44 (JAM)

*THE GAME *

Help a little water droplet [Guttula] traverse the desert to find its way back home, but be careful -- the desert is dry and every step you take costs you your life.

Along the way there are springs that can replenish you, but also bugs and plants that want your essence.

Being selfless and helping the desert bloom gains you mana, but at what cost?

* HOW TO PLAY *

Find your way through the maze to the main spring

WASD or arrow keys to move

Every step takes water

You can touch cacti to make them bloom, but it takes water

Watch out for the spiders!

* DEV NOTES *

Made from scratch using Unity, Pyxel Edit, BeepBox, Bfxr, and Audacity.

I'm tired, hungry, thirsty, and I need a shower -- but I did it!!

Beat both levels. Wish there were more! I wasn't quite sure what what the cacti were for. I made them bloom and got mana, but the mana didn't seem useful for anything.

The pixel art and music fit complemented each other nicely (though I wish the audio loop was a bit longer). No bugs, and the controls were easy to get a handle on! Nice entry :smile:

@boxedmeatrevolution Mana was originally going to be how you leveled up and got bigger, but I had some bug issues so I had to pull that. It was supposed to force you to chose between conserving water and gaining power :-)

Congrats on finishing your game! It's quite enjoyable and I wish it were longer. I like how you interpreted the theme. Good job!

It's sad that mana doesn't mean anything in a game. When you understand that you can avoid watering cactuses it becomes too easy to play, so unfortunately after some more levels you stop playing, mostly because it's not obvious whether the game becomes harder or not. The main character is cute as well as bushes with flowers. Anyway I wish you luck and fixing that bug

@kiddychris I agree -- for the tradeoff too be meaningful you need to have a more tangible reward for the tradeoff other than just seeing the cacti bloom.

Nice sprites, but I am not sure I see the value in the increased mana stuff. Am I missing a mechanic?

fun concept! Needs more levels!
It would be nice if we could use mana for something

Really cute game :3 I have no idea what mana can be used for but I love the cacti and gave them as much water as I could so they can grow. The graphics were pretty cute and the music + sfx were fitting. The spiders looked a bit odd. As a summary the game is really great and should get more levels :)

Nice game. I don't get the mana thing either.
The map art is poor compared to the cute character and cactuses.
Anyway, the game plays very nicely. Also thanks to upload a web version of the game.

I really dig the player sprite/animation! Cool concept with a great vibe. Is mana a measure of score? Congrats on finishing! Good job!

Nice game! More levels would have been nice, but the game is fun and art and music are cool :) Nice!

Fun little maze/exploration game! I am not sure I know what I use the mana for, but at least I made some cacti happy!
There were some 'red rocks' tiles I think were some other type of item?
A few more levels, and perhaps a try-again-but-now with faster speed mode would be good.
