Rocket Bucket by Byron Bowen

[raw]
made by Byron Bowen for LD 40 (COMPO)

The goal is to fly the rocket bucket all the way to the right.
The gameplay is somewhere between Lunar Lander and an arcade claw machine.

Controls:

W - Reverse Thruster
A - Left Thruster
S - Forward Thruster
D - Right Thruster

[ or , - Zoom Camera Out
] or . - Zoom Camera In

Arrow keys - Manually Operate Camera Thrusters

Aside from Unity 5.3.4, I used Photoshop to make the skybox texture and Audacity to make the sounds.

The bucket itself was so heavy I couldn't get off the ground. Scrapping along the bottom, I got half way up the first hill before I hit a bump I could not pass.

If the bucket is too heavy, try playing with lower graphics settings and it should work. I could fix that bug but this is my first Ludum Dare and I don't know if that's allowed.

Edit: I checked the rules, and it says a bug fix like this should be ok, so I'm going to fix it and reupload.

Another edit: Ok it's fixed. Graphics settings shouldn't matter now.

Fun gameplay, although the web version just doesn't work. The buck feels like a two month old is pushing it.

Yeah, I think I should remove the web version, since as you say it isn't playable.

I couldn't really play the desktop version. I tried changing the graphics settings fro the launcher a few times, but I still couldn't get the cart off the ground.

Graphics settings shouldn't matter anymore. Did you try pressing ASD all at the same time?

The game was a good idea but the objective was confusing.

I thought it was hilarious!
Took a second to figure out how to move efficiently, but once I did it made a lot of sense. Kind of reminds me of a claw arcade game, and I like arcade style games.
Nice job!

Kinda hard to move.

Very cool concept! It really fits the theme. Too bad the camera movements are a bit nauseating, and it is hard to understand what to do. It would've been nice if there was some sort of build up in the gameplay. (First fly a bit without balls, then move one ball etc etc).

With some more polishing this could be a super fun web-style game! Well done!

The idea is sweet, but the game is lacking conditions to win or loose it. Also it feels more like a sandbox. Also it wasn’t clear what those green balls are and what to do with them.
I wished it had a bit more polishing. But anyway, in total gj you made it!

Not sure if the green things are good or bad, but once I tipped upside down it was impossible to get moving again. I think the rockets just aren't powerful enough.

A pretty simple, but effective, concept. I couldn't figure out how to use the refueling buckets, which poses a significant problem unless the game can be won without them. (As it were, I failed to win, which leads me to believe that refueling is a necessary part of winning).

Minor nitpick: I also didn't notice a way to quit, which is a slight inconvenience.
