SPORTS by Forest

[raw]
made by Forest for LD 41 (JAM)

Update: Like so many others, we are affected by the Chrome update breaking Unity's sound. But if you click on the game while it's loading, that seems to work around the problem.

Play a nice game of SPORTS with your friends! (Sorry, multiplayer support didn't make the cut for LD, but we'll come back to this game later!)

Controls: * WASD/arrows - Move * E/Shift - Switch character * Space - Attack * P - Pause/Skip Cutscene

This is so much fun! The idea of having the camera follow the ball instead of the player is super interesting, it took me a while to get used to but then it added a fun layer of challenge. The music was superb, too. I will say that while I appreciated that my teammates were actually helpful, there were a few times where I felt like I couldn't even keep up with the NPCs, especially while I was still figuring out how it worked. But once I got the hang of it it was great.

Thanks, @Hannah19! Yeah, I was really worried about doing anything with an AI because it's tough to make them effective, but not too effective. So obviously we went with a game that is mostly AIs. 😅 Still, I'm really glad enjoyed it enough to stick with it!

I think it's a chaotic (and bloody) idea, the gameplay it's like a madness of many thing on the screen

Really (bloody) and fun game! I enjoyed playing it some much. I miss to be able to control the game with the mouse (at least for attacking other characters).

Congrats guys :dog:

It's a bit too chaotic for me to be any good at it but I had fun the entire time... even if the computer beat me into paste (literally)

The half-time shenanigans legit cracked me up. And the "good game" song got a grin out of me. So yeah, I think you deserve that Humor 5 star.

Good crazy fun. Love the art style and sfx.

I really love the concept behind this and I think the execution is mostly great. The one issue I ran into was that the ball got stuck in a corner and I couldn't keep playing. I loved all the "good game" dialogue at the very end! Btw I also made a sports game you can check out if you'd like: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/blipblapball

This is probably the most fun game I've played so far in this LD, total chaos in a good way. I love the art and the sfx, actually the whole package is good. I had some problems getting used to switching players but it got easier as I continued to play. I think the AI is perfectly balanced and the zamboni in halftime is hilarious.

good game..well done...nice job :D
Really great game! Maybe having a bit more control over the ball would have been nice. I was mostly clearing out enemies since the AI was much better at actually handling the ball ^^
Other than that a really brilliant game. I went back to try and salvage my first huge loss but got beat in the last few seconds.
The visuals are stunning although I would have liked for the weapons to have some more impact/over the top animations (the sword one is already perfect).
Overall a crazy and fun game!

Thanks for the great comments everyone! We definitely want to pursue this game later, but we're already working on a game "Among Us" that we gotta ship first!

@DevBayer, That's definitely what we wanted! We'll probably keep going with this when we get a chance. We had so many ideas for even more madness we couldn't get to!

@frogcheese, yeah, when we improve this, I hope we can improve the ball control a lot. We actually wanted really high scoring games, but the goalies ended up so good that we had to make them stationary to get even a few goals. Still so glad the humour came through. That's the score we really wanted to nail!

@Schu, Thanks! It sucks when something gets stuck. It happens to players too sometimes, but we didn't have time to chase down why.

@baczekadam, you can switch between players on your team with E or Shift, but do you mean switch the type of the current character?

@Sibi, We really wanted to do more with the weapons. We had stuff like a dash planned for the spearman, but we just barely finished, so it ended up very out of scope.

Great game, with lots of polish. Love the halftime cleanup!

During one game I somehow lost the ability to move my character. The arrow pointing to the character would still show up when the screen moved away, but controls didn't respond anymore and I couldn't switch characters. I think I caused it by switching characters rapidly at one point. Still won since I had a big lead though :D

Good, lots of polish, but the hit detection was weird and the wind up made it super hard to play.

You've found a way to keep me interested in soccer... or football, or whatever. For that alone, you've won! I liked the attention to detail with things like the halftime cleanup and end game screen. Though, I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't see the final kill stats at the end of the game like they were listed at half time. Overall, great job!

@OmnipotentIndie There was def a bug with the mace that caused it to be delayed, but yeah there is a bit of wind up to all the weapons.

@FussenKuh The halftime ended up going in really late so we didn't have a lot of time left. I think I would've wanted those stats there as well but we ran out of time.

很有趣的的游戏,玩到一半时我突然控制不了任何人了,然后就从玩游戏变成看他们玩游戏了,但光看他们玩游戏也非常有趣。

Oh! I've got a lot of fun with these football warriors(???). Love the atmosphere.

It's a bit hard to know where to hit your opponent but I think it's a part of the pleasure.

I've missed the switch button at first (my bad the instructions was just below) but perhaps you can remind them before starting the game.

Good job!

This gets 5's across the board for me. So much fun, great music, fantastic art and it sticks to the theme as well. But what really sold me was the Zamboni cleaning up at halftime. Well done!

OMG loved this game. I legit spent way too much time playing this. Also thought the Butts sign and slogan in the background was hilarious. Nice touch. The thing that literally made me lol was when it asked if I wanted to play again and the options were "Verily" and "Nay". Don't know why, maybe i'm weird, but I like your sense of humor! Great game, YA GET 5 STARS FROM ME! :D

@BetaCat 哈哈谢谢! 尽管出现了故障,我很高兴你喜欢我们的游戏! (我知道中文很少,我用谷歌翻译)
haha, thanks! I'm happy you liked our game despite the glitch! (I know very little Chinese, I used Google translate)

@Fernando-Labarta Just be relentless like a 2GHz CPU!

@arche-san Yeah, we relied on the instructions being outside the game a bit much. We'll def add a controls screen when we polish this up.

@SeaHam Thanks! Zamboni's gotta tough job, but keeping clean is important!

Hard core! I like the humor, the sound effects, the over the top action happening on the screen but it is a little hectic for me personally to track successfully and switching characters where a little strange. It looks like it tries to give me the character closes to the ball but I seemed to be all over the place - lol. Also, am I not able to control the keeper? Cool concept. Would like to see this fleshed out some more. You have something interesting here

This was really fun!

Sometimes it felt like my attacks weren't connecting when they should, but it mostly felt great.

The halftime body-zamboni was an awesome touch! Great job!

My favorite thing about this game is the name. The music was quite fitting as well, but some of the SFX got old quick. The zamboni coming through was a great touch, especially watching it do the whole court (field?). Would make for great multiplayer fun. Awesome job.

Wow top notch gameplay right there! :D Would've liked a warning where players would be spawning in but except for that it's amazingly well done! The ai (except for the keepers) are really well made holy shit!

I have to edit this in: this game feels sooo much like bloodbowl! without the turn based stuff complexities! Shared it with my bloodbowl buddies!

HAHA! Cool game man!
Your game feels like a direct approach to the jam theme! Not overthinking nothing and just give some medieval weapons to the players is hilarious!

This was super chaotic but surprisingly entertaining! The halftime and endgame screens were a nice touch. Good job! I wish there was a bit more strategy or at least one more move other than having each player just keep swinging a bit mindlessly, but it was still pretty amusing regardless.

I'm not sure if you were able to see it, but I played your game on my stream at https://www.twitch.tv/saoigames tonight.

This reminded me of Blood Bowl but I had trouble getting the ball to go where I wanted, which felt more like Rocket League. At one point the ball flew off the right-hand side of the field the camera followed it, and then nothing happened ever again. It was interesting that the ball changed appearance. Did it also change how it acted?

Really fun and creative! Interesting take on the theme. It's pretty difficult to use the weapons and the different kinds seem unbalanced. I had a great time playing this! Thanks and great job!

OMG I cracked up this is so funny ^^ I loved it, it's really hard to play 'cause it's really "EvE" most of the time, like the computer randomly playing itself ^^#, but DEFFO let ut know if you get around making a PvP version eventually I'd love that :-P And that machine from ice hockey cleaning up the corpses during half-time hahaha you cracked me up nice one sweet as :-P
