Big thanks to @vitogaming for his great help with this project

"You thought, you made a game, and end the LD? You are wrong. Now you are going to write a game for me and hack the ludum dare site! Muha ha ha!"

This is a emulator of old console, inspired by pico8. The game goal is to hack the ludum dare server, sitting in a small room, where you have only one tool - your very old pc.

By the way, did you know, that you can write a real game in this emulator?! Try it, that is insane! See the guide below.

Controls

To play the game, just type commands in the shell. If you are confused, you always can type help.

Menu commands

In the menu there are a few commands:

  • help prints help dialog
  • boot start the game
  • about print game info
  • shutdown exit the game

In-game commands

  • mkdir [dir name] creates a new directory with given name
  • dir prints all files in the working directory
  • rm [file or dir] deletes file or directory
  • woman manual
  • tig tig is not git
  • cd [dir] change working directory
  • pwd prints working directory
  • ping important :) ping-pongs a server
  • shutdown exit the game
  • clear clear terminal

  • run [lua script] runs lua script

  • edit [file] opens file for editing
  • gimp [png file] image editor

I love this in theory, but when I start it up I can hear the music, hear my typing, and see the blinking cursor... but my text is missing. Does the game expect a certain font to be installed?

Windows 7/x64, Java version's admittedly a bit old. (Can grab it if you need it.)

UPDATE: This worked on my Windows 10 laptop... might have been a font issue.

@cppchriscpp, please, make sure that your keyboard layout is english. I had the same problem, trying to type russian letters.

Will see, what is bad with the music. Did it write something to the console?

On the Mac, the editor doesn't work right; as you move the cursor around the file, it inserts random invisible characters into the file at the cursor point (as well as moving the cursor). The result is that the file is no longer syntactically valid.

That said, this is very creative and weird. I really dig the aesthetic, even if I wasn't really able to use it.

This is pretty cool! I encountered a crashing bug when I tried to run some Lua code with that had a typo though.

I managed to get this working on my laptop and found it pretty amusing. Silly, but fun. I think my issue may have been a missing font. Keyboard layout is us/english, and I couldn't get any characters to show up.

My Windows 7 desktop had the issue above, but my windows 10 laptop didn't. I'm wondering if perhaps it's an issue with a missing font. At any rate, not an issue for me anymore! Thanks for a fun game.

@cppchiscpp, thanks! Font is build-in bitmap image, so there shouldn't be any errors :) Any way, that is Windows :) Thanks for feedback!

Wow, I had to re-remember some of my shell commands. Definitely an interesting idea for a game, good job

Cool idea, I really like this tools/toys where you can do anywhere as you want. It prooves coding is a game itself.

Hehe, this is so cool. I loved both mini games, the pong and the hacking RPG like battle. I must admit that I didn't really feel like doing programming in LUA but you deserve big thumbs up for implementing both the language APIs and the "gimp" editor, very nice! Being a sysadmin I wish I saw more games like this and I was glad to find your post on the site today even though I remember seeing this while the jam was ongoing.

Keep up the good work!

Interesting game! In my opinion not really relevant to the theme, but great job anyway
I also still need a few votes, I hope you could rate my game too! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/earth-invaders
