Reptilian President by deathray

[raw]
made by deathray for LD35 (COMPO)
Due to the success of previous reptilians running for public office, you've decided to run for president. The only thing holding you back is your itchy human-suit, and it's tendency to decompose, exposing your true, alien shape. Luckily using the LASERs on your UFO it should be easy to harvest more human-suits; hopefully this won't make the humans panic too much.

Left/Right/A/D = Movement
Tab = beam up/down from UFO
Space = give speech or fire UFO laser to collect human-suit

Green/Red/Blue bar = voter decisions (you are green)
Brown bar = The durability of your human-suit
Orange bar = The level of fear among the citizens

Return to your ship to use one of your human-suits to shapeshift back into a human.

To win: Get over 50% of the vote for the Reptilian Illuminati Party!

I fixed 3 bugs: framework should no longer completely die if it can't load all components in the right order; population calculation no longer counts missing citizens; character can no longer switch parties.

Took me a while to get the hang of it but was good fun.
Works as intented as far as I played it. Won after wiping out a lot of poor non green shirt people for them skin power.
Not much to say, it just works, kinda fun and cute.

Kudos? :)

Lizard people! Nice idea! :)
I didn't quite get the "collect human-suits" idea. It seemed to be sufficient to just jump into the ufo and back to refill the suit. Moving by ufo seemed to have to merit.
I think I once got over 50% approval but I was hacking away on the spacebar, a notification popped up (did I win?) and it instantly disappeared (because I was hitting the spacebar).

I had a really good time scaring away all of the citizens. Getting them all on my side proved to be difficult.

Was very confused for a long time. Didn't realize I had to hold space, not just push it. After that, I saw it was a rather neat concept. Would be interesting to be able to have some reason to use the lizard form rather than just a failure condition that I carefully avoided. Nice job.

Couldn't figure out how to win. Had more than half the bar green with many people still alive. Tried wiping out most of the population, got 100% green with only two people still alive. Still no win.

Really needs sound.

Cute and funny idea. Also the second entry I've played this compo that features a lizard-person president!

Oh man, almost got to halfway green, but then I turned back into an alien because I was too far away from my ship, haha

The blinking eyes are a nice touch, and the beam effect is pretty cool :-)

Really liked the concept! UI and goal was a bit confusing to figure out though!

Man, this is the SECOND politicians-as-secret-reptile-aliens game I've played so far this LD, but I haven't played ONE where you involuntarily turn into a were-whatever at certain times! In fact... the closest to that idea is THIS GAME, 'cause you involuntarily turn back into a reptile!

Anyway: this was a neat idea and it was pretty fun. I only won when I realized I should use the UFO laser to shoot people who wouldn't join up with the reptile party, and having to figure that out made the "win" feel satisfying.

Speaking of making the wins feel satisfying? A "You win!"*screen would've been better than the "You win!" alert, and the game could've used sound, but this was pretty well done overall.

I think if I were to dream up a full release of this, I'd make one where you campaign against other, AI-or-player-controlled politicians. Seems like a fun enough idea to expand on.

Haha this is awesome. Immediately when "shape shift" was announced as the theme, I thought of "They Live" and wanted to do something like this. Good job!

Could have used a few sound effects, but it's an awesome achievement for a compo entry!

Really love the concept, all thought the controls do feel kinda laggy on my system, (might have just been me though, ill try again later.)

Cool game bro! Really love that art style, a little more instruction would make the game easier to pick up though :)

Solid entry! Had some fun but I totally missed the win message because of tapping spacebar at the same time. Nonetheless great fun and awesome concept!

At first it was hard the understand how to play.
But later, it was cool! I love the idea of the shapeshifting UFO beam.

Hilarious idea - was fun once I figured out all the controls and UI. The improvements you made in the post-comp version addressed most of my issues :) I'm still not sure if I hold down space or not? Great job!
