LAST INSTANTS OF LIGHT by Kilirane

[raw]
made by Kilirane for LD 39 (JAM)

Lost in the dark, running out of power, you must revive fires to pierce the darkness, and find the light again.

I tried to create a dark and immersive game with a minimum number of assets. Please play in the dark and with a gamepad for a better experience. (but of course you can use your keyboard)

Hope you like it !

If you're lost, you'll find some hints below.

I made the graphics, code, music and sound feedbacks. I did not make the "ambiant" sfx (wind, fire, footsteps)

Controls :

  • Gamepad : left analog stick / A
  • Keyboard : arrow keys / spacebar

UPDATE - HINTS :

The main goal is to progress trought the forest. Dying is a part of the process. You must explore as far a possible in any directions to find the next fire. Then you must manage to start the fire by activating simultaneously all the cristals linked to it. It requires your power to activate crystals, so you mut manage to activate multiple crystals at the same time. (you have approx 3 seconds before a crystal shut off, you must activate all the linked crystals in this time). Once you have found a fire, go straight to it to save your energy. The energy will be restored as you start a fire.

Fires are checkpoints, when you die, you come back to the last fire where you rested.

If you find the stone door, you'll need a 'orange triangle/key' to open it. You'll find it on a stone stele in the forest. Once you have the key, you must come back to the door with it without dying. (you'll have to take it again). Be carefull to rest at each fires on the road.

Hope you'll find the exit of this dark forest :)

This looks utterly gorgeous, and I love immersive and atmospheric games, so I'd just love to play this, but.. I got a ''lastinstantsoflight' quit unexpectedly' pop-up. I'm using Mac OSX.

I don't understand exactly what to do, and I die before I can do much. Some sort of a tutorial would help a lot. I absolutely adore the graphics and mood though! Really beautiful.

the graphics and the mood are soooooooo good! The game is pretty hardcore tho, or maybe I missed something?

It's a beautiful and atmospheric game, but despite dying and retrying up to 10 times I still have no idea what to do in the game. I can make some kind of ping (which seems to have no effect other than draining a large amount of my energy). I regenerate my energy at the point in the beginning, but after that I cannot find anywhere to regenerate energy, so I just die after walking as far as I can. There're some lights floating around which also seems to have no effect (my ping doesn't affect them either). I did find one object which seemed to react to my ping, but it didn't seem to do anything other than light up.

Just a short explanation of what to do in the game would have been great, because it's really hard to understand as it is now, and the main problem is that you die before you have any chance to try to find out what to do :(

As everyone else I really REALLY liked the graphics, sound, music and general atmosphere though, and I have a feeling that was your main goal. Definitely a great job on that :)

The Artstyle is just wow. It looks amazing and the sound is beautifull. But I think you run out of Energy way too fast or maybe I'm just doing something wrong. But whatever, all in all this is amazing.

You set out to make a dark and moody game, and you utterly smashed it: the visuals are fantastic, and there's such a great atmosphere. I like that you allow the player to explore without holding their hand - but I did end up getting stuck - I managed to light the second bonfire and found a third off to the left, but I couldn't figure out how to reach and activate the crystals without losing all my power. I think the fact that I kept on trying says a lot, though (I'm still trying to do it now)!

Great work - maybe, if people keep getting confused, you could add an optional walk-through of sorts? It's a real shame that people aren't seeing all the effort you've put into this - I know I'd love to move further on!

Thank you very much for your feedbacks ! I really enjoyed making this game/experience, i'm glad you liked the atmosphere.

>> If you are stuck, i just added a hint section in the description.

The game was supposed to be played with a controller, wich allow you to do diagonals, and much shorter path between the fires. I've just upated with diagonals in the keyboard controls, I think the game was much harder with the keyboard because of that...
