Currency delivery by pcmaster

[raw]
made by pcmaster for LD 44 (COMPO)

sshot.png

Controlled by :keyboard: or :video_game:

The selection of the states and map generation is random at every start.

Made in Unity3D/C#/BFXR/Audacity/BoscaCeoil/MSPaint

Made during 48 hours (actual time spent ~16h)

I used 1 font from the net, plus I didn't draw the flags (Wikipedia). I totally didn't expect to realise I'd fit into the COMPO restrictions (I always do jams), so here I am! Oooooh-yeeeah!

Rough reconstruction of my work (times in CEST/UTC+2):

  • Sat 08:00 - start thinking
  • Sat 09:00 - fetch groceries (30 min)
  • Sat 11:00 - the idea with delivering currencies between banks
  • Sat 12:00 - lunch
  • Sat 13:00 - start prototyping, promise self not to do too much programmer's art too early
  • Sat 15:00 - a stroll outside for an hour
  • Sat 16:30 - continue working, find that I broke my promise to myself
  • Sat 18:00 - map generator, textures loader, movement, some effects and animations working
  • Sat 20:00 - go out for the whole evening

  • Sun 09:00 - restart working

  • Sun 12:00 - lunch
  • Sun 13:00 - gameplay is still very bad
  • Sun 16:00 - download and process all currencies and flags
  • Sun 20:00 - final time count-down gameplay, win/fail screens, start screen done
  • Sun 21:00 - add sounds and music
  • Sun 23:00 - UI is totally broken in WebGL

  • Mon 01:00 - Cry after 2 hours wasted, still not find a way to show the UI in WebGL

  • Mon 02:00 - Go to bad sad and pissed off BUT submit (Win64 only + src)
  • COMPO ENDS
  • Mon 08:00 - start workaround on the WebGL UI (=porting/bugfixing)
  • Mon 09:45 - submit a version with WebGL UI working (=porting/bugfixing)
  • Mon 22:00 - submit a WebGL version without music (=porting/bugfixing)

You should sell it to schools as educational game to learn about currency symbols because it was both fun to play and even I learned about the symbol of Ruble

The idea is nice. I like that position of the banks are random each play. One of the most superb things is animations, especially car jumping one - it's totally cute. The thing I do not liked - the controls on a keyboard do not feels native, the experience with joypad is much better.

Yeah, I had big plans with controls but then I decided I'm in COMPO and not in JAM so it all had to go :D

@superchihuahua thanks for the comment :) I'm actually considering that :D

I had fun because the controls were so hard to get down. Like I knew where I wanted to go but I just couldn't get the car to go that way. I liked it a lot! I did have some glitchy music though.

@tfdiaz - thanks! :) I wanted the controls to behave kinda like the car in Overcooked. Did you play the default WebGL version? I couldn't get the music right, although it works on Win64 with no problems. Most probably this 2018.2.5f5 version of Unity3D is buggy :(

the sound is much too loud but everything works, even if not very convinced of the use of the theme

I didn't think the controls were that bad but looking at the comments I guess it's the keyboard that's iffy, I used a joypad and it felt fine. Like the game, I love me some random generation! Good work.

Nice graphics and solid mechanics. I found the controls and the way the truck moves to be very enjoyable. Also the way you interpreted the theme was very original. Good job!

Controls on keyboard work, it's just that you input the direction you want to go rather than steering, so it takes time getting used to.

It's pretty neat, I could see it used in schools. The currency symbols making the pattern for the grass is a nice detail.

@chameleon I managed to make the grass texture like 30 minutes before submitting... in MS Paint, with the ugly spray brush, of course! :D Thank you a bunch :)

To be fair I did my dirt and grass texture in 10 minutes, simply by creating solid green and brown squares in Piskel, then wiggling around the lighten tool a bunch. But I like your workaround better, it makes a texture that's much more fitting, than a very nice but generic texture.

A take on the theme I hadn't thought of - pretty cool! There's an amazing feel behind the vehicle control (on keyboard), it made the shipping experience quite gratifying, not to mention I learned currency symbols haha. The music is a bit repetitive, which is fine except for the high-pitched instrument that is a bit intrusive. That's nitpick though. Overall, you've pushed a concept quite well! Congrats!

Well, the interpretation of the theme is so primitive it almost hurts. Overall gameplay has two main problems in my opinion: awkward navigation (it reminded me of the games like dick tracy and who framed roger rabbit on NES) and to close view to the play so it's not only hard to move it's also hard to navigate.
But it's a bit educational.

Difficulty levels:
- easy
- hard
- (rage) quit :D

just kidding. The first entry on compo I played that fully supported gamepad. The control feels smooth and the concept is cool. I actually enjoyed getting around in the van, reminded me of overcooked. Loved the random generation.

The music is a little bit annoying (reminded me of musical postcards), so thanks for the version with it turned off ;)

The sound was a bit grating! But other than that, it all went smoothly - sometimes the bank would give me faulty money, that the Van refused to pick up. That - is dedication to pure cash, none of these dirty notes from the banks :).
