BLOK'D by AndrewJAdams

[raw]
made by AndrewJAdams for LD 40 (COMPO)

Screen Shot 2017-12-03 at 8.48.13 PM.png Clear the grid and try not to get blok'd.

Place bloks on a 5x5 grid to make lines of 3 and clear the grid. More matches means more points, but also more colors. You can use your points to skip colors, but don't run out of empty spaces. Thanks for playing! Feedback appreciated.

Works in any internet browser - including mobile ;)

UPDATE: Post Compo I’ve added a post compo version with the following updates:

Added Music/SFX with toggle button

Added visibility for next two colors

Added highest score tracking between rounds (clears if you leave the page)

Thanks everyone for playing, and the great feedback!

Yes, that was actually shockingly fun. At first I thought, "This is way too simple." But then it got quite intriguing. I got 81 points.

reminds me a lot of Threes ;) just without the sliding tiles. Nice overall, very high quality!

A nice simple game. A good twist on the traditional match 3 that links well with the theme. The ability to skip a block at a cost was a good move for a bit of strategic depth. Would have been great to have some sound effects/music as well as a bit of game feel (make the blocks pop when a line is made, etc).

Nice job, once you line up everything in rows it becomes manageable.

I got up to about 60 points before I buggered it up! I thought I could game the system because there were only a handful of colours in the beginning, but as more were added... well, that was me out! The more you have the worse it is, indeed!

Excellent use of the theme. Very deceptive. Starts out so simple, you build a strategy, it works great... then there's simply too many colours to make it fit. Very self explanatory gameplay.

Great game!

Fun game. Interesting strategic decisions with the skip button.

a simple but really addictive game. Your game has a pretty good optic. =)

Really fun game, would be nice to have a maximum score counter, as I feel that after playing for a while your score ends up decreasing as you have to avoid placing different colours.

Got 60 with 14 colors. Nice balance between skipping colors and gaining points. Though it seemed like there wasn't TOO much strategy with placing blocks - you just used columns as much as possible and worked from outside in. Also, when you get put in a bad place, it's basically impossible to recover... feels a bit too random also (maybe if you knew the next 2 colors?)

Thank you everyone for the helpful feedback. I'm glad to hear that folks are enjoying the game.

@rob-white I'll add audio in the post-comp version. Thanks!

@wevel The slow decrease was meant as a motivator to show you the power of skipping and subtly direct the player to try and clear the board. I'll definitely try and include a highest score in the post-comp version.

@foolmoron The next two or three colors could add a nice strategic touch and incentive to skip or not. I'll playtest the idea. Thanks for the feedback!

Solid game! Really pleasant colour palette and design. It'd be cool if there was some kind of animation when the groups of 3 disappear (maybe they fade to white then to transparent).

Can confirm it plays well on android also. :)

Needs polish, but cool concept, some poping three animation + some sound!

I've got about 80 points. At start you might think that it's too easy, but you get corrected pretty fast :)
Overall pretty nice idea, very simple and clean - but most importantly - it's a little bit addicting!
I would add some sounds though.
Great job!

Really enjoyed this one. Found it a bit too easy with the skipping. Would play this as a phone app, definitely, and would love to see it developed further; things like combo bonuses, obstacles in the levels etc. nice job!

Actually before getting 134 points I didn't expect to play that much x)
It has something addictive I really appreciated.
Sticks perfectly to the theme, simple graphics, instinctive, easy to understand. Could be a classic. It doesn't need a humor aspect though (from my point of view of course).

Seemingly simple, but extremely fun puzzle game, making you plan your every move once you get to it's harder parts. As a fan of Threes, this got me hooked instantly. With a bit of polish, music and sound-effects I can absolutely see this going on Appstores being enjoyed by a huge audience.

Absolutely enjoyed playing this and love that I can do it from my phone. It was amazing that you put in the option to turn the numbers on for a color blind mode. For a puzzle game, had a good balance of feeling like I was doing good and being challenging at the same time.

I'm not colorblind myself but I thought it was really cool that you were able to build in accessibility features for a compo!

Game looks good! After first minute I thought I had found a winning strategy but a moment ago there was too many different colors and I become desparate... Maybe this game needs another mechanic to "smooth" a difficulty curve.

This game was super challenging but super fun! I played it again today while waiting for some files from a co-worker. Definitely a solid game.

Very nice, got quite hooked. I wish there would be a way to increase the grid and maybe a mode where player can see two blocks in the future.

A nice compact and fun entry. Can totally see this working as a mobile game. More juice (sound FX) and this would have been pretty much perfect

I played for maybe half an hour. That's a REALLY long time for a jam game. This is a fantastic match game. At first glance it doesn't fit the theme, but the higher your score, the more colors you need to match until at some point the board is impossible to solve.

A lovely experience.

I have played and rated this already! But I have not left a comment?
Hmmm - I liked it. Loved the "simplistic" but very wonderful style. Good job...
