Evil Current by raoz

made by raoz for LD 44 (JAM)

Your life as an electric current.

As sentient electricity, you do not need to follow the wires that have been laid out, you are free to choose your own path. Utilize this power to conquer the world (or, I mean, the levels that we ended up completing in time).

HOW TO PLAY

Click on marked points on wires to enable/disable paths. Moving through some wires will also turn on connected electromagnets or servos.

BLUE wires have current in them, GREY ones do not.

In order to progress to next levels, you have to close all switches that prevent power from reaching those levels.

NOTE

This game is quite raw and unfinished, as around 70 hours were spent writing a game engine from scratch, figuring out how physics is supposed to work, implementing collisions, etc., and only the last few hours were allocated for actual game development. But even so, the third and fourth level turned out fun for even ourselves in the end, so hopefully you'll get a kick out of this game, albeit only briefly.

Aside from a few bumps at the start, this game was quite interesting and had me thinking for a bit on some of the levels. The physics and collision seem very impressive for something done in only 70 hours, Great job on that! Furthermore, the concept of the game is very unique and had me laughing when I realized the connection to the theme. Some things could use some improvement though. Specifically, it was not very obvious the switches were closed when the circles were touching them and led to confusion as to how to activate them. Another thing I noticed was that you can click the red '+' sign to turn the current on and off to the whole circuit but it does not state that it is a switch or show whether or not it is on. Those issues are very small though and overall, it was definitely worth my time to play. Level design was solid enough to show me how to activate the switches without the animation so good job on that! Solid game considering the engine was made from scratch.

@luther-1 Thank you for the comments! Being able to click the plus is not what's supposed to happen, as it makes almost all the levels trivial, thus acting as some sort of "skip level" button, we have patched it now, as it is trivial to change but game-breaking.

I have nothing further to add to Luther comment. I had the same feeling about your entry, and enjoyed the game as weel :) Congrats !

An interesting puzzle game and a very unique take on the theme; the last level felt a bit fiddly having to click two of the nodes in quick succession, but the magnetism physics effect was well done and there's lots of potential for additional puzzles/mechanics to be implemented in the future.

The game is pretty cool! I felt like I had to cheese the last level to beat it by disabling the currents as fast as I could. But overall I enjoyed my time with the game and it's pretty impressive that y'all made the game from scratch with your own engine. Great work!
