American Healthcare by Abraxas Interactive

CONTROLS
Left / Right Keys = Move around. Avoid red things.
Up = "Shoot", which costs a dollar.
Down = "Charge up", and increase your funds.
GAMEPLAY
During the game, your funds are depleted as time goes on. At any point if you run out of money, you die. If you're low on cash you'll have to convert some time into money and "go to work" so charge up your funds with the DOWN key.
As in all games there are enemies that spawn, consider them bills, illnesses, etc., and you have to throw your hard-earned money at the enemy to make them go away before they kill you.
Nobody's perfect, and sometimes you'll miss a payment, and if that happens, things get a little worse for you. If you miss all the enemies they drop one level lower, and get one level closer to you.

@rossng - I'm definitely going to be pushing out some post-jam updates, and I want to work on some music and sound effects for sure. I wish I could have got that in there before time ran out but c'est la vie.
@pixelcrustpunk - I agree! I'm going to personally make an effort to make more games that are more socially conscious.
@repine - Thank you! I got a new "real job" this year so I haven't been spending as much time doing game development, but what little time I've spent I've tried to focus on "game feel." There is still some opportunities for polish, as this was definitely a rushed job, but I'm happy with what I have so far.
@tractorfarm - I love games where you can change the direction of your shots, it's such a small thing but it makes such a big difference.
I wasn't sure what my progress was throughout the level though. There was no indication that I lost, aside form it restarting, and I'm not sure if there's a winning condition.
@superpokeunicorn Thanks for giving it a shot and for the feedback! Sorry to hear you weren't feeling the healthcare metaphor, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game!
Here's some critiques I had:
1) The art seems a bit blurry. I believe this was made in GameMaker? If so, make sure you toggle off Interpolate Colours between Pixels, as it seems to blur pixel art.
2) Sound effects would go a long way in terms of game feel. Music would be nice too!
3) The particle effects are quite nice, but the bright contrasting colours can make it a bit hard to see everything else. That's a minor gripe, though.
Overall, I think it was quite nice. The trailing particle effects of the ship when you move look killer. Keep at it!
@mdWade Thanks for the critique! I'm definitely going to compose and add sound effects and music to the game post-LD, but in 9 hours it was just impossible to do everything I wanted. When it came down to the wire, gameplay was more important than sound for the proof-of-concept.
The art is good, but is a bit jarring with the blur and random particle colours.
I loved the tilting, was a great feature.
I'm not American, but anything that points out the shit show that is their healthcare system gets an upvote from me!
A great entry with lots of promise!
However, the score text that appears each time you destroy an enemy was a bit hard to read, didnt even notice it until I had destroyed about 15!
@thecritterscove - Glad you had fun, and thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately I didn't have time to test it on different resolutions but I'll keep that in mind.
