The Semi-Realistic City Game by Jan

[raw]
made by Jan for LD 40 (JAM)

LD40Title.png

This is the 2nd time I have participated in the Ludum Dare Game Jam.

I struggled a bit with the theme, but after some thinking settled on a city building game. Farms create food, store it in warehouses, which in turn distribute it to the residents. But over time your residents will get spoiled and start eating more - "The more you have, the worse it gets" As an additional challenge you can also take care of the waste management to improve your city living conditions.

I really enjoyed taking part in the Jam and working on this game as I got more and more into it.

The game comes as a Java JAR file. So as long as you got Java setup on your system it should run. Instructions on how to play are given right after you start the game.

Edit: There seems to be an issue with playing the MP3 sound files on Linux. I added a link to a version without sounds to help with that as a quick fix.

Side note: the train is just eye candy

At first it seemed like a lot to take in but I think you did a good job making it easy to understand. I don't think it's super challenging yet, so maybe changing some conditions could make it more exciting, I did really enjoy it though! :)

Amazing progress for weekend game jam. At first it looks complicated (because so much buttons and very big text tutorial), but immediately it become more intuitive.

You could be in Compo, but as I understand, you've ran out of time, yeah?

@interpol Thank you! Yes, unfortunately I ran out of time to add all the things I had in mind. I certainly needed the extra 24h to get the game to where it is now.

Was looking forward to playing this, but when i press P to unpause the game in the very beginning it crashes or something? It stays open but mouse clicks and key presses don't to anything, also the red rectangle stays in the same place. Before that when it's paused i can change building selection and so on.

@meursault I am sorry to hear that. Can you please try running the game from the command console with: java -jar "The Semi-Realistic City Game.jar"? That should output whichever error is happening in the console. Then I could see what is going wrong.

Very fun and well put together game :) Slight lack of depth in the building types, but for a game put together so quickly that's expected. I really liked how you have to plan for garbage as well as food, it added a second dimension to the whole experience!

@meursault: It seems to be that Linux has problems with playing the MP3 sound files of the game. I added a link to a version of the game without sounds. I hope that helps.

Holy moly, this is a nice game :) . Always loved sim-city type games. I was a bit quick to "finish" the game, but still an awesome job.

@jan i got it working with the new jar. Though i'm on Windows 10, not Linux ;-)

The game is really impressive. The controls should be the big week point but it works really well even without "real" UI. I also like the art style. Good job!

I enjoyed the game a lot, simple but easy to understand, with nice graphics and also, the train is lovely.

A minor note: maybe you could make it a bit more challenging? :)

Great job!

This is a very nice city simulation game. Obviously, it would be great to see cars, tractors, people, and the garbage trucks moving around, but there is only so much that can be done in the time limit. (This desire will not be reflected in the score.) I am truly impressed with where the game is now. The warehouses, though, seemed to have a very limited range.

I have played for a long time now maybe too long, I love this game.

Concerning the graphics it looks pretty good, even though the graphics are kind of simple they look great! This kind of graphics fit with this game.

Concerning the audio, I liked the bird noises. But I wanted more, it felt empty. But that’s fine because the bird sounds made me relaxed.

Overall I like this game very much. I had an amazing time playing it. It’s kind of addicting. I could definitely have played more if I had the time to do so. Thank you so much for this experience and good luck in the future! Have an awesome day, and I hope to see you in the next jam!

This is easily the best game i have played in the jam so far! I love management games - This is made beautifully! At first i was unclear on how to play - but as soon as i learned it was amazing! My citizens often left me because ileft them to starve - but they soon returned as well when the food came back!

Here is my score. I can play this game forever!!

Some of my ideas would be to show the number of houses/farms/ and other buildings i have.

Other than that - maybe add other needs that need to be met for citizens.

Very well done! One day i too shall create good games like this!
