You God Mail by west

[raw]
made by west for LD 40 (JAM)

dev: west https://ldjam.com/users/west

artist: NaBo https://ldjam.com/users/nabo369

dev/artist note: FIRST TIME WE MANAGED TO FINISH IN TIME!

if you want to use this game for anything feel free to

the game is about you being a new god over a village in time of the hunter & gatherers, the goal is to get as many followers as possible(at this moment the winning conditions are 200 followers) but ofcourse it gets harder the more you have.

dev note: due to the limited amount of time we had there arent as many mails(events) in the game as we hoped it would have so you'll see quite a few mails get repeated.

known issues: the sizing of the in game ui based on the screensize is a little wonky at times(the best resolution would be 1366 x 768 )

a mac buid? doesnt work for some reason but will be added once i figure out whats wrong(if you have any idea what might cause this please post a comment it would be apreciated, for now ill reinstall unity)

the game might be a little unbalanced due to not playtesting for too long however i(west) did a last minute attempt at balancing the game so it might just be possible to beat at this moment.

IMPORTANT: click the emails to open them (will put this in an update)

It's a nice Idea, however I think tutorial should explain better how to fulfill requests of people as I didn't fully understand that part.

@fancyreckless thanks for the feedback! ill try to make the tutorial a little simpler aswell since it currently is just a wall of text.

@simone honestly same here but we havent done sound design before and with the time slowly running out we just decided to put it online,
this might be a good time to start learning how to make music tho!

Very Bruce Almighty-esque, I like it :sunglasses: I had a hard time understanding how I should answer the prayers, but it was fun figuring out. It would be "fun" if you also had to handle spam emails, hehe.

i love the concept, at first it reminded me of Bruce Almighty till i found the minimise button. i like the windowed interface too, the game could have used more polish however,

bugs:
- at my aspect ratio the tutorial text is visible on the left of the screen and half obscures the godos (he he!) button.
- at first i didnt realise that i had changed month, and skipped a few, so some sort of indicator might be appropriate there

ps - loved the traveller email!, poor john tho

@dregs thanks we had alot of fun writing the events, on the ratio im having a little trouble but i am working on it, also im thinking of adding a small timer to the next month button so you cant accidentally double click it or maybe a small notification on the god mail program that you have received new mails.

thanks for the feedback, im currently watching bruce almighty since i've never seen it before =P
edit: ..... wow this game could be a reference to the movie.... its not but it could be....

@west lol, i hope you enjoyed the movie, you see why i made the link based on the email screen alone, especially the buttons! the new mails notification is a good idea! i didnt notice the village change (might be cos i never hit any thresholds) but another quick thought would be to maybe change that like black and white would make your temple more disney / gothic depending on your karma, and maybe adding in ppl as the pop changes, or upgrading a temple image based on followers would be a nice touch (if stuff like this is already in there, then please ignore me, sadly i never got to more than 100 followers)

ps i played again and this time i was brave and tentatively denied the traveller (i never did before cos i know his pain) fortunately it didnt go as i expected.

nabo(the artist) is working on adding some pichforks to the villagers when they're angry and maybe something like party hats when they're happy.

the original plan was to have you go through different times based on your amount of followers so you would(for example) actually see your village change to communism just because you ignored an email xD but the longer we worked on it the more it became clear that wasnt happening for a while =P

Really like the time traveler email you get. I couldnt seem to do anything to reduce the karma I had so everyone stopped following me, I think you could do a lot with this if you spent some more time on it.

Congratz on making it it time! We know it's hard to 1. make a game in 72hrs and 2. make sure it's balanced and has all it's features. This game has a really cool concept. It was fun deciding whose prayers to garnt and whose not. I didn't manage to ammass a lot of followers though. Maybe I'm a too strict god, haha!

Would love to have music because after playing it a while, it felt kinda sleepy.
"I'm a time traveler, please let unity stop crashing" best prayer in the game.

Loved the concept on the whole! Like others have said, some music would have been nice, but I can understand the time constraints were pretty strict! Otherwise the emails were pretty well done, with some extra benefits, penalties, emails and some moving parts, this would make a genuinely great game I'd definitely play, so seriously congrats!

Really awesome, such a cool idea. With some music and sound effects, this could be really good. Great job!

One suggestion would be to add some visible consequences to your actions, like making someone die, and a message that they are angry they died, or that people are mad they died. But, I understand how little time there was, you completed a lot in the time.

Cool idea, and the prayers were great. However, it was a bit hard to see what the results of accepting/discarding the wishes was. The graphics were pretty good, and I liked how you could actually see the village and not just the email screen.
