Grim Depths by Flying Cat of the Pepes

[raw]
made by Flying Cat of the Pepes for LD 44 (COMPO)

Battle your way through a dungeon, then upgrade and unlock new gear (Like the "Satanic Blade," a giant sword that burns enemies or a staff that launches lasers to kill a whole line of slimes at once) by spending your life at a demonic altar which also re-colors the entire game, and then enter the next dungeon, with stronger, faster, and deadlier enemies, battling your way from the first demonic red dungeon to an acid-green dungeon all the way to the final glowing white dungeons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4wqyXQlQ4I Grim Depths 4282019 110348 PM.png Grim Depths 4282019 103941 PMMoment(3).jpg

A fun little game with some nice graphics. I was missig the music, but I adore the sound effects which are in the game.

The tutorial text could have used a background to be better readable, and I would have wished for some different enemies after a while.

But in total it is a really solid entry!

@andidebob Thank you! Yah, I never got around to adding music, so you weren't missing anything. Good idea with the tutorial text, I'll give it a background if I ever upload a new version of the game. And yah, I planned to have 3 enemies total but I didn't have time for that so you're just left with the slimes.

The visual appeal of the game is very strong. I found that the basic sword that you start with is a bit too powerful when upgraded a good amount. However, when I played with other weapons the game felt a lot more balanced. I ran into only one real issue, which was that the slime guys can push the player through closed doors, locking them out of progressing any further. Not really a big deal though. That's what I get for cowering near doorways.

This game was fun, the audio was good, the mood was properly atmospheric for a dark hellscape, and the theme was well represented.

I'd count that as quite a successful game! Good job!

@vinay-rao Thank you!!!!!!! Yah, I noticed after playing it for a while that the sword is a bit overpowered. I'll up its upgrade cost a bunch if I release a new version of the game. Thank you for all the good things you've said :D

Good job! While the art isn't *that* good, you nailed the style, and everything goes together very nicely. I really like how the color changes every time you finish a room!

Nice game, played smooth. My fav part was the sound effect of the magic staff's laser blast.

@gward2489 Thanks! I was recording another sound effect and the mic got too close to my mouth so there was weird noise and it happened to sound like a really good laser sound, so I used that instead even though I already made a laser sound that was more high-pitched like the stuff you hear in other games.

That was a fun entry! I enjoyed leveling up the heat-seeker, but didn't stand a chance after a while. Would have loved some music and some different enemies, but enjoyed playing this one. Good job!

Really good use of the theme, nice sense of risk-reward to it. Combat felt a little clunky, but the powerful weapons were satisfying to use. Great stuff.

Heat game, I really like that the weapon changes colour with the room, though It would be cool if the weapon remained the colour of the room you bought it in, just so you knew how long it had been since it was upgraded.
