Gravy Train by pkenney

[raw]
made by pkenney for LD 44 (COMPO)

Can you learn quickly on the job?

If not, you might get cleaned out, because these darn green guys just keep interfering!

Well, at least you have the one tool that solves all of life's problems: a shovel.

Dev Notes:

(You don't have to read this to play)

This LD was unusual. I generally leave sound effects for the very end, but I just couldn't get down to the gameplay core without making the train feel more alive... so a huge part of Saturday was a diversion into the land of foley sound recording. The various sounds are made mostly from items I found in my kitchen.

After doing a weird game last time, I told myself that LD44 would be a return to simple arcade fun... and then I made this. So much for plans!

Still, I hope you enjoy your ride on the Gravy Train.

Love to hear what you think, good or bad.

Smashing thieves feels amazingly crunchy. Very well done game feel. I really like the art, the happy train face made me smile too. I collected my reward... and smashed some protesters along the way :cat:

Great Audio FX, graphics and above all humourus.
It felt a bit long / repetitive in the middle, but the ending was absolutely worth it.

No music, but the sound effects are on point, this was a really neat concept that I think turned out really well

I really liked this one! The graphics were simple but nice, although it could use a background. It got a little repetitive towards the middle/end, but the ending was super fun!

Squishing bugs feels nice. Can't help but to get a little motion sick from shoveling coal while the train is moving. Enjoyed what I could play though.

Solid entry pkenny! I see that you had the train idea too haha. I had a good time getting going full speed, though I didn't realize at first that's what I was supposed to do (I thought the coal was limited!). Squashing bugs with a shovel felt satisfying. It had weight being it. And the art is so charming. Having faces on everything is great.

The ending was a pretty good joke too ;D. Good job!.

Something that stands out about this game is that it's playable w just dpad, or basically a 1-finger game if it was on mobile. I've found it hard to create compelling 1-finger experiences myself but you created a unique setup of elements here with such simple controls. I think you're right that the sound design was pretty key to completing the core loop, as just going back and forth between the coal was surprisingly satisfying. The game seems basic at first but you have to juggle speed, defense, and positioning which are all tightly wound together so as a player it's fun to think about all those aspects and what you want to concentrate on. You definitely got me to yell out when I got swarmed by 4 guys while I was chasing my train (and prevented me from getting a perfect score D:). Honestly a pretty original and fun game that inspires other ideas for me. If I were to tackle a train game I would've probably just given my character a gun but I'm thinking I should try more things like this.

What a useless piece of train! With enough determination, you could deliver all gold alone, by yourself! Ok, jokes aside, the game is quite original and what I like the most is that gameplay is very easy to grasp, you don't need a manual to understand the rules. And ofc, the rewards room at the end was satisfactory. In some way i miss some music (or maybe some dynamics, idk) on background bc the ride is very long and after the middle become tedious. Overall, great job.

That was pretty fun. Would like more levels. Likes the sfx and the overall style very much. Thanks for that last room with the striking green thingies.

I loved this game. Stream trains have always had a soft spot in my heart! Loved having to add coal. I found that there needed to be a balance with the speed, so that you could get off to defend, but not have the train get to far ahead. For a 48 hour game it's amazing. Congrats.

I love how simple of a concept this was and how well executed it is. I had a lot of fun playing this, great job!

Very well designed!

- How you load the cargo in the beginning, tutorial and story.
- Visual fire meter on the train.
- The balance between how fast you want to run the train and how far you can reach back when the frogs take the gold and you have to run after them.
- When you have multiple gold chunks and smash frogs, the gold fly further away.

I haven’t played enough games as a ghost shoveling coal on a train while protecting gold from frog thieves!

Hahahah now that is a truly perfect game for Ludum Dare! Simplistic yet innovative game core and playing it was super fun. I really like how you designed and balanced the game, player character performing actions automatically if close enough was super intuitive and didn't take anything from the game. Train speed and and bug attacks were well balanced and provided enough challenge for the whole game. And humour is also top notch, for some reason i was grinning through the whole game since the the train started moving and I finally got what kind of game is this going to be. All in all, excellent Ludum Dare game!

The sound effects of this game take it up to 11! Very simple premise, but it made even shoveling coal fun!
I really liked how the faster you went also made it harder to (satisfyingly) squish all those gold-stealing bugs!
I really connected with wanting to just get to the mint without being bothered by bugs! Bravo!
