Hotel Nero by Nightfall

[raw]
made by Nightfall for LD 40 (JAM)

mainmenu-ykb6ubjv.png

History tends to repeat itself. The manager and part-time arsonist of Hotel Nero is burning down his very own hotel with the guests still inside! Luckily Firefighter Gustav is there to save them, but he needs your help.

Gameplay

Use WASD to move Gustav

You can pick up Guests with LMB

Hint: Gustav is a strong man, he can carry more than one person, but less than four, he’s not that strong

Carry the guests to safety and drop with LMB in the marked area near the entrance

In some Levels you can find a Key that unlocks shortcuts, so you can get more people to safety in less time!

Save enough people and you may progress to the next Level, but be careful not to get burned. You can leave anytime, by returning to the entrance and clicking LMB

Press ESC to return to the Main Menu

Press ESC in Main Menu to quit, if that's your kind of thing

This is so good for a jam weekend. The art is perfect, the music is *really* good though it looks like you didn't make it since I can't rate it - but still a good selection nonetheless.

It reminded me of an old SNES firefighter game I loved.

Hell, even the main menu is polished and nice, I really liked this and rated it accordingly!

Very cool game! I love how I got to stack a bunch of people on my back lol. The graphics are gorgeous and love what you did with the theme.

Oh my god. Simple and very, very beautiful game. How did you manage to create so good looking game within 3 days? You have very good artists.

What I can't find and will be very glad to see -- level picking. That would be nice.

While the idea is interesting and visually the game is somewhat specific - and I like it ... I've found two items that made the game extremely hard to win.

One of those was collision detection and character movement. It tends to be easy to get stuck on corner, which means you lose time, which means you can't get people out fast enough. The second was picking of the characters - there is no visual identification you can pick them (e.g. when you enter picking range).

What I absolutely loved was the main menu and user interface (as it is often the last thing I do in game). I'm always struggling with making good looking user interface, and you have absolutely stunning one.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the great Feedback!

@interpol there is level selection in the main menu. Just hit one of the numbers next to the door. Only works, if you played though the levels before though.

@zgragselus totally agree that movement cant be optimised a lot more. We know that the game is very difficult right now if you try to get all characters in each level, but thats by design. More visual feedback on character picking is a great idea.

Great looking game, good atmosphere. The sound track really compliments the spread of the fire giving a real sense of urgency. The whole thing does feel rather frenzied.I appreciated the innovation, but I would not really call this a fun game. That probably speaks more to my tastes more than the quality itself. The whole strategic collection thing does not do it for me, but I can see exactly where you are going with how a person might spend a lot of time developing a strategic plan and that deserves high marks. You can really tell that a lot of work went into this.

Very nice overall! The level design is really well done - you definitely have to put some thought into how many trips to take, and who to leave behind. The aesthetic is solid and pleasing and the fire is suitably terrifying.

Good game for the game jam. Graphics are good, and really fun! Seems to lag sometimes as you approach the fire.

Looks and plays pretty good! Took me a bit, but beat all the levels. My favorite part, quite honestly though, was that menu haha. Really cool how you set that up!

Well done, this game is great! I think the first level was way too difficult though, imo you should ease into difficulty, start easy, hook the player in and then increase the difficulty once they're addicted!

Whoa! That intro blew me away from a jam project! The music fits the aesthetic perfectly, the idea of planning your route because you move slower with more people is always a tight game loop. The doorways were a bit glitchy to get through. Perhaps, in the future, place some clip colliders to help guide the player through the door. The sound and glow of the fire were great. I bet there was a discussion on how to efficiently do the particles! Excellent work team! Hope to see you around next Jam.

Very impressive for a game jam project. It's a bit annoying that people can't just save themselves, maybe there should be a reason that they're trapped instead of just standing there waiting to be saved.

Awesome looking game! Only wrong collisions sometimes interrupt my progress. I have only one suggestion: maybe you can remove left mouse button to hold a person. Just drag it if come closer.

Not sure I could actually save everyone in the first level, but it looked amazing!

Possibly the best game I've seen so far! This has a lot of potential and I'd love to keep playing.

The first level is definitely the most difficult because of how small it is, but great job!

oh congratulation! Nice art! Can I follow it also on indiexpo? Do you have also a page there? This looks great! I looked for the games that used the #LDJAM but I don't find yours. So good luck!! I will hope to make a video about it!

@roy87 it is not on indiexpo right now. If we get to fix all the issues it still has right now, we might put it there as well.

Quite tricky game! I haven't managed to get three stars on first two levels, no matter how hard i've tried  But it's really fun and well made though! I love the artstyle, and the jazzy toones that play throughout the game are just great! Awesome entry.

I love art and music, too much for a weekend jam, gratz! But sometime exit the game with only one button will be a problem, in one case my game exit to menu and with 3 victims in mi shoulder :S Nice work!
