What did you say Captain? by Marcenat

[raw]
made by Marcenat for LD 41 (JAM)

A text based shoot'em up

You command a faithful crew of 5 person in a powerful ship. But you have a weakness : you don't know your alphabet... and the filthy RedSand clan have stolen the letters you use as reminder ! Giving orders will be tough, but you must find your letters to be able to speak correctly again !

How to play

Use the keyboard to issue orders to your ship. If you want to pause press escape, this will grant you access to all the letters. You can type "retry" to restart the level, or "menu" to go back to menu.

Content

  • 2 levels
  • 2 boss fights
  • dozens of possible commans
  • an evil alien general with a moustache

Commands

Part of the fun is to find what to type, but if you want to cheat and know all the available orders, you can look in the file commands.txt :) If you have trouble finding what to type, here are some hints:

Spoiler

  • At the end of level 1, Type "next level" to go to level 2
  • you can protect your ship by typing "shield"
  • You can alter your speed by typing "slow" or "fast" before an order (ex: "slow left")
  • you can fire a laser by typing "laser"
  • you can alter the size of your missiles and laser by typing "huge" before an order (ex:"huge missile")
  • you can fire many missiles if you type a number before "fire" (ex: "4 fire")
  • you can retry a level if you type "retry"

I was sceptical of how well this could work but you made a fantastic game from these two ideas. innovation 4/5 and 5/5 for the theme.

Audio 4/5 was great really fit the space shooter vibe.

Graphics 3/5 were alright just the standard ones you see in almost all shootem ups.

Fun 3/5 the controls were actually pretty good for a text game of course that slows the game down considerably and that doesnt work with a shmup. I'd have liked more hints on what to do I never figured out how to go faster and what do you type when it says where do you want to go?

overall 3.5/5

If you are wondering what to type at the end of level 1, "next level" is an accepted answer and load level 2. ("somewhere" works too)

Very fun and original (we had pretty similar ideas as well haha)! The only thing I didn't liked it was there was no list of commands, I often forgot or acidentaly skipped the dialogue that hinted the command. Other than that, pretty awesome!

Well done! Especially with the hints from the crew! Very rewarding to just try to type "laser" and realizing it was a valid command X-D

I couldn't get this to run on Mac: it starts up, but my ship just sits there and nothing ever happens. Did I miss something?

Really well put together; having enough content to make two whole levels was a great touch!

@btrotter101 I'm sorry I haven't test it on MAC, maybe the data folders are not at the right place ?
The folders "Datas" and "Levels" needs to be right next to the exe.

That still hasn't got it. Thanks for looking, though. I'll see if I can grab a PC this weekend to try it out.

First things first, your artstyle is very nice^^. Eventhough your pixelart is a bit of a mixed bag. On one hand your have your super detailed ship models and on the other hand your have the pixelated beam (I know its just a beam and it does its job ver nicely), but from a consistency point of view you could change that if you intend to further polish your game.

Mechanics wise its pretty fun to maneuver the ship via key inputs, however I struggled a bit to change direction in the right time to avoid enemy fire (I am a noob at touch typing :-p). I could compensate for my lack of skill with Ctrl + c and Ctrl + v, "fire" again and again pasted, but I am not sure if those key binds are concidered cheating :D.

Overall I think you have created a pretty fun and finished game^^.

If you want you can rate our game too. We still need some ratings. You can find us here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/hoverfield-park-beat-haven
