Phobos by Yokimbo

[raw]
made by Yokimbo for LD 40 (JAM)

A strange planet. An endless fight for survival.

The main goal of the game is to collect the glowing objects by jumping from platform to another to catch the glowies as they fall down. Meanwhile enemies are trying to rush you and take your glowies, so naturally you must shoot them. The more glowies you have, the worse it will get. You will shoot faster, but your enemies will also rush you in much greater numbers.

Use Z to switch platforms, mouse to shoot!

Phobos was created using fantasy console Pico-8 by a team of 6 people. This was our first Pico-8 project and we had a lot of fun creating the game.

I liked this game a lot. The retro style (not just visually but also via the audio). The game feel was great (not too much screen shake). It can get quite hectic when you're gaining all of those lives; which fits the theme well.

Best I could get was 8. I like the idea although I wish those damn bird things weren't irritating.

8 seems to be quite common as a top score :D Thanks for playing everyone!

Your game Phobos is a really cool idea and really puts the theme of “The more you have, the worse it is”, into a really cool game. I enjoyed the game a lot and the steep increase of difficulty adds a lot of fun challenge.

Pros:
- The introduction scene is absolutely amazing and I tended to just watch the generation of the different lines instead of playing the game :)
- The style of the game was really nice and reminded me of 1 of that old retro games.
- The having to choose which side to jump to

Cons:
- There is no tutorial so it took me a while to really understand what to do

Overall this was a really nice game and you should be proud of what you achieved. :)

Nice game, I liked the visual and the simple idea of switching side to get the bonus. The difficulty seems to scale with how many stars you get, but I didn't really understood that until a few minutes. If you just play casually, it quickly becomes a bit boring and infinite, as the difficult will stay low. So I think making the difficulty raise with time would have helped making it more fun, forcing you to take the items to get more damages, and thus increasing the difficulty. But it was fun anyway, keep up the good work!

Love the graphics. I have to admit that I got bored very quickly at first just as somebody said. I guess it is just not my type. I could not figure out the goal of the game without reading the instruction just as what I usually do.

Simple but nice idea which fits to the theme. Kept trying to get more than 8. But things just escalated too quickly. ^^ I like the art style and atmosphere. Felt like I was playing some old arcade game. Would have loved a little bit more variation in the music though.

Great graphics! Cool concept, and I like that it's a pseudo-platfomer where you just toggle from platform to platform. At a certain point the action kinda plateaued, but it never got dull. I would love to see this expanded for a future release.

I enjoyed this game. It was better if there was a clear purpose or a clear game end.

Pico-8 is cool stuff but for some reason I've never actually played a Pico-8 game before this one!

After holding out for a while and eventually dying I came back here and saw the GIF and I do wonder what the heck is going on in it. I never managed to get that kind of powerup. :( Would've been neat since the regular shooting was a little unprecise and sometimes there just was no way to save myself from an incoming obstacle.

I don't entirely get the connection to the theme but I'm guessing, based on the GIF, that that's simply because I just wasn't good enough to "have more" as it were. 😛 I'm rather lousy at these. But great job!
