🌽🍅Farmed and Dangerous🐺🧔 by Dan Davis

made by Dan Davis for LD 41 (JAM)

No cornstalk is safe, no tomato plant secure. Whether it’s an ancient curse or mutagenic aberration causing you to change is immaterial, you must protect your property. By day, you are a mild-mannered agriculturist. By night, you are a hungry, razor-clawed, vegan werewolf with an insatiable appetite for grains and vegetables. FarmedAndDangerouslarge-300x170.png In this farm simulator/hack-n-slash, you are tasked with growing enough crops to feed your nocturnal hungers. Eat too much of your supply, and you won’t have enough cash to pay rent and save the family farm… The same family who neglected to tell you about the curse that’s affected generations of your kin. fod02-300x169.png Day phases give you the opportunity to expend stamina to plant and harvest crops as well as upgrade and expand your farm. Save cash to provide your nighttime self with buffs. Night phases turn you into a werewolf. Slash through nightmare denizens (in actuality your own produce) to replenish your daytime stamina. The more expensive the crop you destroy, the more stamina you get. Find the correct balance between farm-building and hack-n-slash action as you fulfill your destiny to become Farmed and Dangerous. fod07-300x169.png Features - Day/Night cycle - Voice overs - Dynamic UI based on day cycle - Animated creatures and player characters - Basic creature AI (attacking and tracking) - _Some music - Player can attack (one monster type)

Instructions - Move character with Arrow Keys - Character attacks with Spacebar - Left click to plant seeds (currently random)

Features to implement - Store menu to purchase and sell goods (Graphical Asset complete, code not implemented) - Counters for inventory and money (currently static, potentially random for effect) - Attack sequences (all attacks by player and from creatures) - Consumption and collection of produce - Some more music - Sound effects (some recorded, yet to implement)

Sprite Sheet of artwork that didn't quite make it.

I absolutely love the idea of this game and think, that this got potential. Some points I would improve:

1. The controls feel somehow a little bit clunky/unclear. Maybe make a tutorial image in the beginning or explain them throughout the game. And put the plant command on space as well.
2. The window could reaaaally be bigger!
3. Add all the features you mentioned on your list, this could be a great game actually! :D

If you want to check out my entry for this jam as well, you can find it here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/secrets-of-the-forest
I'd appreciate it if you gave me some feedback as well.

Nice entry, people! Graphics and audio are smashing, but I feel that came at the expense of actual gameplay. I couldn't maul tomato's, and when attacking a melon it was unclear I needed to hold space, instead of tapping space to do an attack.
And as said already: the screen is really small...

I was a bit confused by your game. I didn't know where to go or what to do. The night and day cycle confused me more. I couldn't kill the pumpkin enemies as the bear?

I like the sounds though!

I made a sort of similar farming/twin-stick shooter and it's fun to see other peoples' take on that genre.

I really like the risk/reward system that you mention where planting more crops will make the night much harder, so that could be a lot of fun once it's implemented. All the plant sprites are also very good.

Overall, I think there's potential here, but I can't tell how much of it is currently working. It seems like the crops you plant during the day don't really impact what happens at nighttime? I'm also concerned that the combat won't work out once the enemies can hurt you, since the only way to attack them seems to be standing still right next to them.

Thanks so much @DevEmil @Dovakla @pebkac @hestercombe for your input! We'd planned to have the crops planted during the day become the monsters in the evening such that when you attack and kill them while being a werewolf that you'd see dead crops in the day. This would have helped to provide a bit more of a cohesive experience and tie-in the story.

That said, we're invigorated by your input to continue to develop our title and build upon the solid foundation that was created.

Regarding confusion, yes providing instructions and a better button configuration would clear that up immediately. As for combat system working, we're hard at work to get that going as well.

Lastly, the decision to not go fullscreen may have been a poor choice so we'll take that into consideration when putting together the next major build.

I can't wait to dig in a play as many games as possible over the course of the next weeks!

I second hestercombe's comment about your game. I quite liked the idea of it and the audio and graphics, but I was also quite confused. Some more instruction and improved controls would really help
