Shicken by Saiodin

[raw]
made by Saiodin for LD35 (COMPO)
Hello!

This is my first Ludum Dare and I had a great time participating! The game I made is called Shicken and lets you control a character that can shoot (and push, throw and glide) things to transform/shapeshift them into other things. This is required to progress through the levels of this 2D jump and run platformer. It features a tutorial and 7 levels. Keyboard and Gamepad controls are supported, the controls are found in the main menu. The game was made using Unreal Engine 4, which is for sure not the best engine for 2D games, but that just makes me more interested in showing what's possible. Not sure what else to say... I hope you have fun with the game! :)

Some additional information since some people have problems:

- The number keys 1,2,3,4 change the weapon type (Blocks, Chickens, Feathers, Slimes can be transformed. The freeze shot just works on slimes)
- Coins don't do anything and are just there to guide you
- Chicken can be picked up with E and thrown with E. They trigger switches that open gates
- The goal in every level is to reach the blue portal, often accomplished by transforming something in the level and using it

Fun Game! I really like the bloomy pixel graphics and the overall mood it sets. The controls where a bit stiff and could have used a bit more focus. Overall a very nice entry.
Well done!

The graphics were nice, but I think you went a bit overboard on the glow effects.

Took me a little bit to figure out the core mechanic of changing my shot types, but once I understood it I had a great time! BEAUTIFUL visuals! I liked having the chicken flip the door switch. I had a couple small issues like getting stuck between blocks on occasion, but overall you did REALLY well!

Love it, extremely well made with nice mood, mechanics and sweet little details like grass pushed when you walk by. I could not get weapon change to work though so got stuck...

Nice chicken... It was really cute to see it running an floating ... good mechanics, good state of polishment... are the coins good for something? The pixelart is really nicely done, some fx are too heavy in my eyes... maybe the bloom should be reduced by 25% if that is possible... the night level was fun... but the traps were hard to recognize... but all in all are very good start into ludumdare !

Hi, nice game ! We're realizing a video with several games of the Ludum Dare #35.
Can you add your game on indiexpo.net ? (it's free)
So we can include also your game in the video ;)
p.s. write #LDJAM in the game's description

Fun game. Mechanics work well and I like your application of the theme. Graphics were cool too. The levels could have used some variety though.

The Graphics were really cool and the theme well implemented. It was hard to figure
out the goal. After getting the coins I didnt know what to to. Beside that nicely done!

Thank you for all the comments!

I updated the description to answer the most common problems people had to progress

@Bloom: Might have really overdone it with that :)
@Level variety: Trust me, I wanted to! But I just couldn't make more in the 48 hours.
@Tighter controls: True, I weren't fully happy but had to move on with other features
@Chicken stuck on head: That is indeed a bug :x
@Stuck between boxes: A bug I introduced last minute it seems, when I added some shot particle effects. The player shot isn't supposed to go through multiple enemis. But if you get stuck between boxes, just use the chicken shot!

@Freank: I will put the game up, but the site seems to be down atm.

Hey, thanks for playing my game. Regarding the controls: Yeah I know it's 1-4, it just didnt do anything for me! :p
I tried on the numpad, or above the letters and then everywhere on the keyboard and I could never change weapon!

Pretty neat game. Thought the platforming was fair (despite my stream's frame-rate issues), and the puzzles were straight-forward. I thought it was a little too simple, and would have really wished to see the different items be used in interesting combinations. As an example, it'll be cool to stack blocks by turning one into a chicken, throwing one on top of another crate, then returning the chicken into a block again.

Beautiful game. My only issue is that the Chicken/Lever mechanic is not telegraphed.

I found a bug! If you let the rock drop on you on the 2nd level, the rock becomes intangible afterwards...

This is a cool game though. Good stuff!
