Minus by DrSkort

Can you escape a city where you will be hunted?

Screenshot 1.PNG

Minus is a 2d platformer in a dystopian world where every life has a value. If it becomes negative, these humans will be hunted. Your goal is to escape from this city.

Also it would like to start a small competition to make the game more fun. Try to get a score as low (not negative high) as possible and post a screenshot of it. The winner at the end of the voting-phade will be added somehow ingame.

screenshot 2.PNG

The controls are pretty simple:

You move with ‘A’ and ‘D’ or the left and right arrow key and you jump with ‘C’ or 'Space' If you get Stuck somewhere you can die with 'R'

Screenshot 3.PNG

Known issues:

The character can stick to walls very rarely.

Screenshot 4.PNG

Now good luck and have fun :)

I really liked the sort of ominous vibe. That being said, it was kind of hard to tell the difference between pit and solid ground, so I ended up falling in a lot of pits. There didn't really feel like a huge consequence for doing so, however. It controlled very well though, and felt very responsive

I enjoyed the art and music, both are well done. I think improvement could be made on the platforming, as it's very quick and easy to make mistakes.

Well done!

Thank you for your feedback @tg1397 and @raphiell I'm glad you liked the controls and I think they might be indeed a bit fast. Especially in the darker areas it is kind of hard to see pits. Thanks for playing :)

The music and art really set the mood, and the story elements were interesting. The implementation of the theme was interesting, but seems like it didn't have a huge impact on gameplay. The gameplay itself however was pretty smooth, other than the bugs you are already aware of. Overall, great job!

@spaceface14dev Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad that you liked the game and I really have to deal with this bugs. The theme was a bit poorly implemented and I also was planning to do a little more than presented in my endresult but at least it became kind of a score-system :D Thank your for playing ^^

Really liked the game, love the theme especially. Its hard to tell the difference between pit and ground, and a couple times my character spawned into the ground so I had to reboot the game. Fun game though!

Nice mood! I had some trouble pressing C to jump, maybe spacebar would be a better choice. Great level design! The art is fine but there is a problem of being able to distinguish the solid areas since they are both nearly the same color brick, it would help to make the solid areas stand out more. The platforming physics could use a bit of tweaking, it is hard to land on those platforms!

the music is stunning and I really loved the visuals, however jumping with c felt a little bit stilted to me

I liked the very atmospheric music and the little pieces of world buildings set around the level :)

Thank you for your great feedback @maggie199x When your character spawns (for whatever reason this bug occurs^^) you have to jump out of the ground. And it is indeed pretty hard to tell the difference between pit and ground in some places ^^ Glad you had fun :) Thanks for playing

The music is perfect for the theme! It was very challenging which I like in a platformer. The art was acceptable. It _was_ weird for "C" to be the jump button, I would've expected a space, but that's minor. Overall a fun experience!

Thank you @killedbyapixel and @bramreth for your Feedback :) The background bricks could use some darker color maybe. I'm not quite sure what you mean with platforming physics. I know that there are bugs because of the colliders of the tilemap which results in the bugs and I know that you can stick to the moving platforms. Maybe you mean that the player is too fast or the camera to slow? The 'c' Button is the Key for jumping in Celeste, a game which I was playing lately, and it provides a lot of advantages because it isn't as big as the space bar but I can also add the space bar as an alternative. I'm glad you liked the graphics and the sound :) Thank you for playing

Thanks for your feedback :) @isayneigh As I mentioned above I borrowed the 'c'-key from another game and could maybe add 'space' as an alternative. I'm glad you had fun playing it ^^ It would be pretty nice if you could say what could improve my pixel art ^^ And also it's great to hear that you liked my music :) Thanks for playing

Try making the foreground objects brighter instead of making the background objects darker! What I mean about platforming physics is not the values you've set, those are fine. What I'm taking about is there are many small things you an add that would help the feel and make it easier to control. Try searching on youtube for something like "platforming physics" to learn more about it. There are few great talks I've seen that will make a huge difference for you.

@drskort yeah sorry for the lack of detail on the art. I left it vague because honestly I believe it comes down to personal preference. I'm partial to a little more detail (specifically the player and the background). What I did like though is that it was cohesive! Everything fit together nicely. Don't get me wrong, i'd play this any day (i'm not a stickler for graphics). I just feel if _anything_ could be improved, it'd be that.

@isayneigh Thanks for the explanation ^^ I'm really thankful for your detailed feedback :) Details are really sometimes really nice. I think I didn't had that much time for them ^^ because I was trying to build to much stuff into the game. After all attention to detail is, what makes great pixel art because every pixel can be set perfectly if you know what I mean ^^ Again thank you for your feedback :)

Ambiance is good but it was a bit hard to play because of the speed of the character.

I really like the mood with this - the dark graphics and audio make it really atmospheric. It was pretty challenging! Sometimes the movement stopped working and the character would run on the spot, and some of the collisions were a bit odd, but apart from that it's great! Good job

It look like a great game, liked the pixel art, the mood, the music but it was too buggy. I often wanted to run before the jump but the character would get stuck on some collider or something and it would stop moving, I had to run left, then right again but it would get stuck just few blocks after the first one. I often couldn't even run right after starting the level and I had to turn it off when the character "started" buried in the ground. :/ What a shame, it looked and sounded really good!

huge music! I was in immediately!
storyline and fleeing at night made me try to go farther, and even the fact that you never die and start straight from checkpoint help continuing.
The "steps" are quickly difficult thought, the platforms are soon short, and the character moves fast, maybe a smoother levelling up?
I wasn't annoyed by move bugs, but I noticed sometimes I could stand on pikes without 'dying'

great entry,

I suck at platformers but I gave it my best shot. There are a few bugs, mostly seem like collison issues. Are you doing pixel perfect collision? that could be why. I had fun, I'll play the co op game later with my boyfriend :D

01. May 2019 · 20:20 UTC
@chrisdugne Thank you for your feedback ^^ Yes the controls are a bit awkward :D But good job on avoiding bugs ^^ And the standing on spikes is a bug too. It happens if you actually stand on the bricks left or right from the spikes because the collision detection does not work as planned ._. Thanks for playing :D

The level design is good, but this game made me remember why i don't do platformers in Unity during gamejams anymore. Last year i've run into all of the problems i found here in my own game - animations too fast, hazards too hard to see or avoid, glitchy physics and a generally not 'flow-y' feeling of the game.
You did do better than i did last year tho, i'd say :p

This was really cool! I loved the ambiance you created with the music and background, they really set the mood! A few bugs I encountered:

- jumping with space will only lift you up a few pixels
- the death sound volume wasn't consistent (sometimes suuuuper loud and sometimes pretty soft)
- the character won't move with the final moving platform if he's standing on the back end of it

Overall, I enjoyed the platforming challenges you created, well done!

**Side note:** @drskort I saw your blog post, thanks for offering to check out your reviewers' games!

Thank you for your feedback @adam-elaoud and @nico-fallosch Thank you very much for your bug report :) I was too dumb to test jumping with 'space' and because of that missed an important bug occuring. I fixed all the bugs and gave both of you feedback :) on your games. I'm glad you liked the game @adam-elaoud ^^ @nico-fallosch You can now check out the game because all major bugs should be fixed and if not it would be really nice to report them ^^ Thanks for playing :)

Jumping is buggy but the movement felt very nice and satisfying! I liked the music and the story behind it. The part where you have to go from platform to platform to not get impaled got me quite a few times :D. Overall, good entry!

Really great work, this'll be the highest ratings I've given out so far. The mood was incredible with both an extremely appropriate music track, great text, and artwork all matching up well. Level design was also good, especially the part where you have to go from the high platform to the low one and back all in the air.

To improve:

- The back side of the sideways spikes kills when it should just be a wall since it's not the sharp end

- Movement could be smoother

- On reset, retains your end-game score from the last run so you have to refresh

Also here's my current PB, might improve later:

Thank you very much @GenTel :) It's really cool to hear, that you enjoyed my game that much :o The improvements are all good ideas and I am gonna try to implement them soon, even though it's pretty hard for me to create smoother movement ^^ I am still very inexperienced in creating platformers and am unsure what to implement. -1980 is pretty solid ^^ Good job :D and I'm also very glad you enjoyed the more challenging part of the game :) Thanks a lot for your feedback and for playing the game ^^

Nice moody little platformer. The graphics and music were good. I mostly liked the level design, except one part where I had to wait a really long time for a platform to come back so I could jump on it.
