Gelatin Eater by Squatch

[raw]
made by Squatch for LD 40 (COMPO)

Gelatin Eater is an infinite platformer. Your only goal is to go up! The higher you get and the more gelatin you eat the more score you'll get.

You can hold down space to bounce. The more gelatin you eat the higher you'll bounce. But be careful, you can also bounce off of platforms, shooting you downwards into abyss.

I like it. Not quite sure how it relates to the theme, though.

@kbf123 You need gelatin to get a better score, but the more you have the more of a chance you have of bouncing off a ceiling and losing.

Very glad that the theme didn't make you create an unfun mechanic. The idea of the more gelatin you eat the higher you jump but you could fall off, connects to the theme and is a risk reward mechanic. FANTASTIC game design

I had a lot of fun playing this. I don't know if I'm the only one, but I kept getting a lot of small angular graphical artifacts. Not too distracting though. Good job with the gameplay mechanics. I found that I ended up just holding down the spacebar all the time unless I had a bad bounce.

If you continue with this concept, you should make it faster all around. Could be fun with a good bit of challenge!

Very nice gameplay. At first I fell at every chance I had, but after some practice I got 2343 score. And can do better! =)

Your bounce mechanic is legitimately genius and I wish i'd thought of it. Slap this on a phone with a quick spit polish and i'd play the bejeezus out of it. Incredible stuff friend!

I didn't think much of your game at first, but it opened up a strange fascination once I figured that you can make huge leaps if you wedged the ball between two ledges and bounced back and forth for a while.

I think if you focused more on this aspect of the game and added some more polish to the controls (allowing the player more control over the ball, e.g. by adding more staggered ledges or slow motion at the press of a button), I think the core mechanics could have been quite addicting. I got to 1900 points and would have continued playing if I had the feeling that I could exploit these big jumps better.

I really liked the 'bounce' mechanic! I found myself bouncing fairly high by the end of the game. Thanks for sharing.

Nice entry. took me a while to get good at bouncing. Good take on the theme. Here's my twitch stream of it: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/207917800

It's a pretty solid game. The core mechanic is quite unique and well thought out, and the levels compliment it quite well. The audio manages to avoid being annoying, which is much harder than it sounds, and fits the game well. The graphics as well are simple and work nicely. I did occasionally wedge myself between the floor and a low ceiling before shooting off into the sunset, and I must admit it felt slightly like I was cheating. At the beggining as well the level pans up way too fast, and I died almost instantly in my first go. My second try however went much better. It's simple and it works

Very fun game!
I like the gameplay, is an awesome ideea, and i think i would play this on my phone (rather than my pc). I sugest you to go further with this game, and officialy publish it! The sound sound a little buggy when you bouncing really fast, and some gray dots appear on textures, but i enjoyed playing this game! Well done!

What a great idea for a comical game, I loved the level of challenge as you jump higher and higher. Feature idea would be to have enemies you have to dodge back and forth as you climb up higher and higher.
