Heavy Gold by Poorwill

[raw]
made by Poorwill for LD 40 (COMPO)

The more loot you have, the more slower and sluggish you are.

There are goblins who want to hurt you.

There are goblins who are more interested in the loot.

Some loot is heavier.

LMB to move.

RMB to swing your sword.

SPACE to drop the heaviest loot you have.

You are Hoxan! A legendary hero too deep inside a dungeon.

Gather loot falling from the cracks from the level above.

Kill goblins with your mighty dreihander.

Loot info:

Silver - Heavy, worthless

Gold - Heavy, worth slightly more

Rubies - Light, worth significantly more

Diamonds - Light, worth a lot

Fun little game. Would be pretty neat with upgrades or something to spend your gold on.

I love the idea of being burdened by loot, nice work!

This is a neat little game! I really really enjoy the way the sword swings. If there's one thing to come out of this game, it's that. To me, the looting didn't really seem to influence much. I always died before I could notice a difference in movement due to the weight. Great execution for a great idea, just needs some touching up!

P.S. Your death screen says the same thing as mine does! "You have perished"

Not sure if intentional, but your ...club? is always damaging to enemies even when you're not swinging it, so you can rack up kills just by playing like zoolander and only ever turning in one direction so enemies run onto your weapon?
Nice idea and decent execution though!

It's a tough game, but fun! It took me a bit to get used to the controls, but eventually I got it down. The weight didn't matter as much as I thought it would.

Very Cool! If the gold had more of a use I feel it would provide more incentive, the music and graphics are simple but are quite effective, the graphics show what's what and the music gives a frantic vibe. Overall very good.

The bat swing felt a little finicky. I had more success just running past enemies and letting the bat hit them without swinging. I never got far enough to feel the effects of the weight of the treasure slowing me down. All in all, pretty fun.

Spin to win! Really unique combat, "i like it" - as nixxiom would say.

Fun game, really fun to play. Really enjoyed the unique way the combat works. Would be really interested to see how you would expand on this with extra mechanics but really good for 48 hours.

When I deciphered that RMB meant right click, it was much easier.
It's entertaining, it's cool that you can hit goblins by just turning around.

Thanks guys! All the feedback is really appreciated. The only person I really asked for feedback during development was myself and that's a sure road to oblivion!

@benhumphries yeah "You have perished" felt really powerful and appropriate for some reason :D. I also have a "You have triumphed" in there.

Difficult to play on a laptop touch pad, but I broke out my mouse and it was all good.

This was fun. It could have benefited from a sound when you lose health, or some other type of feedback.

Overall good job!

Really well made game, the art style is really nice and the music works well. I feel that you should be some way to heal or get upgrades, maybe using gold or something.

Fun little game! I like the little beep boots sound effects. With abit more time you could have added some sort of progression system in it, just a small one could have been cool, like every X currency your sword gets a tad longer but mobs gets a tad faster / spawn faster. Idk, it was fun though! ^^

That was a nice one. Intereting control idea and the whole game mechanic works and makes fun. That was fun!

Not very innovative but I kinda like the gameplay. The controls are a bit wonky but still feels very responsive and the feedback (sound effects) is good. I wish there were other types of items, upgrades and enemies, it becomes repetitive after a while.

Well done on the graphics. The game is fun to play although the LMB/RMB controls are cumbersome with a trackpad. It would be nice if there were button alternatives for attack.

Fun! I felt like a ninja! Using mouse for player movement is a distinct choice here, but you can't go wrong with 3D graphics and sword-ing dudes!

It's a solid concept, but the controls really harmed the fun factor for me a lot. I would highly recommend looking into WASD+Mouse controls, at least as an option, as I feel like the game would control far better with such a setup available. The graphics were simple but effective, the audio on the other hand was just kinda bland IMO. The game did a good job of fitting the theme of "the more you have, the worse it is", and I do really feel like it could've been far more enjoyable if the controls weren't so finicky and the game was generally a bit more polished, but as it stands, at least it's pretty decent for a game made in such a short amount of time, though not particularly unique or memorable.

Really solid graphics, and good mechanics. I would've preferred arrows or wasd movement, since LMB to move doesn't offer as much precision. Overall, it's fun and fits the theme!

Really cool little game, requires some skill to finish it. The sounds and smashing the goblins feels really satisfying. I like it (y)

Nice take on the more is worse theme. I enjoyed the graphics and sound. However, I think it would have been easier to understand the different types of treasures if they were actually different shapes. Overall, good job

I love the idea and the animation when the enemies breaks is great. Very enjoyable.

The only thing "to improve" that I can suggest (you tested and played it more times) is the movement. Maybe an asdw movement + hitting with the mouse would be easier to control, but I saw it as a challenge and I really like it.

Great work

Fun game! The thing i enjoyed most was the goblins flying through the air. The graphics also looked really neat and i liked the collection aspect.

Great job!

Interesting game, it would definitely be nicer to have keyboard movement (I would personally prefer to still move in direction of mouse, just not hold mouse 1 to move, instead W or something)

Good job :)

Hey sir, I loved the art of your game, I love this minimalist style.

Okay, seems very good, but I think there is a little bit lack of objective. I would like to see some improvement to my hero when I collect gold, or spend it on something, because for me is more interesting moving around killing Goblins then getting points :)

Btw, hope this helps. If you need more deep info, you can summon me here. Hope I can help you with this feedback. Also, if possible check my game too.

Big fan of the graphical style - overall a really good mood & aesthetic with the sound as well. I enjoyed fighting off the goblins for the loot, but it felt a little shallow. While definitely using the theme, slowing down as you collect loot made combat less enjoyable as the game progresses. I feel like it's just missing one more mechanic to really make it a great all around experience.

Nice entry in a short weekend, I prefer WSAD but mouse move is okay too.

While I found it somewhat weird to move with left click and then keep spamming right click, I suppose it couldn't be helped. The game is fast paced, and while I thought that 5 minutes were more than enough for a playthrough, I don't really think I lasted more than 2. At points I thought it was better to just ignore the goblins, but then again...

The mechanics for picking up the gold and dropping it were more than fine, although I never felt a hindrance from carrying too much. Again, I don't think I'm very good at this game :P

Well, regardless, it was a fun experience, so I hope you're proud of it, as you should be. In behalf of my team, we contratulate you on making it to the compo! Cheers! :whale:

You've done a lot with a little here. I only feel like you were missing more feedback from the loot picked up. There's definitely more you can do to sign post the quality of loot picked up. Similarly, some more feedback for when you take damage and when you kill enemies would have been nice.

The drop loot mechanic is cool, I just feel like it might have been missing a further goal. Perhaps needing to bring the loot back to a base? It needed a little extra anyway :)

Oh and the music reminded me of the first Mortal Kombat, nice :D

The voxel effects are pretty fun, and blindingly swinging my sword into hordes is more fun that I thought it would be. Controls were surprising at first, but I thought they were easy enough to pickup, especially given the room size. Music is dungeony and pleasing in that regard.

Feedback is definitely the key word here--in my situation, I was sort of surprised when I died the first time, since unlike hitting the goblins (which provides great, very entertaining feedback) you at most get a little tick and the health bar in the corner going down when you run into a goblin too fast.

Fun little game! It was a bit hard to control it with the mouse imo, id prefer using the keyboard for movement and mouse for rotation. Great music!
