Retroviral by saiodin

Thanks for taking the time to check out our game!
"Retroviral" aims to combine 2 incompatible genres in a fun and silly way by merging golf with none other than a hyperactive first person shooter! Dilly-dally your way through the obstacle courses whilst trying to score that glorious hole in one, but watch your back for mobs!
Controls were kept standard and intuitive;
WASD & mouse-look will move your character around, whilst left click allows you to shoot enemies that appear on the course. Tired of your starter weapon? Nr. keys 1-5 will cylce through your weapons for a more favorable one... "IF" you have it unlocked through gameplay that is!
But how does one golf?! Simple! Walk up to the ball and right click, it'll bring up a course overview that'll let you aim your shot. Once you've got the arrow all nicely lined up and are ready to take a swing, left click to charge and release to smack the ball away as desired!! Uh oh! Did something go wrong in this perfect release build? No worries! Pressing "R" will reset the ball for you, and backspace will do the same for the entire level.
Putting the ball will earn you "Qbits", our in-game currency that'll allow you to purchase some new weaponry at the shop in-between levels.
Have fun!

For the Lore hounds:
It's the year 2080.
After many exhilarating years of eating Doritos and masturbating... Oh, and also some R&D in quantum computing technology, humanity finally put in the least bit of effort to create the world's first Quantum Computer, named: "The Tesseract"! Upon completion it seemed a miserable failure, as it didn't increase the FPS count of poorly optimized alpha games like everybody thought it would. In a burst of new hope though, the mainstream realized the true potential of this marvelous machine... Instantly navigating huge databases of pornography whilst doubling as a golf ball!
The world seemed like a better place, at least for a while... In the shadows lurked a sect of pure evil, calling themselves: "The Cult of Pai" In a desperate attempt to neutralize the Tesseract, the cult designed viruses to attack and penetrate at full force!
Beaten off and scared, humanity turns to you, THE Bobby Smith! Trained by Grandmaster Larry Wall in the ways of the Perl, and a lifetime dedicated to illogical thinking, you're the only one that lacks enough sense to assault the Cult of Pai into submission. Armed with nothing more than a mustache, mullet, sunglasses, oh... And 60 metric tons of firepower, Bobbie plugged his Prince Albert into the Tesseract and began the upload.
Whilst dissipating into the mainframe, Bobbie looked over and reminded the world he came here to do only 2 things: Play a relaxing game of golf whilst hyperactively shooting shizzle up! And he's all out of shizzle...

The enemies just kept on respawning on top of me so I found it easier just pushing the ball around the course after making the first swing. The shot power was a bit hard to control and the ball went over the wall a couple of time though it also made me score a hole in on on the first course by accident. ;)
Great job team!
The multiple weapons and enemy types were a neat touch!
I like the retrowave-like looklike.
When I fall of the map, I am unable to continue :(
Really impressive, especially for a LDJ game. Nice work!
1. Was a little bummed out I could not bonk the enemies with the ball in golf mode. That would be dope!
2. I sorta, kinda might have forgotten the controls immediately after jumping into the game. 😅 A cheatsheet hidden under a button would be handy in such situations.
3. The mouse sensitivity felt a bit high for an fps game.
4. It's usually tough to get physics right and I think you did a good job considering how little time there is in a jam. One thing I'd maybe look at is how easy it is to send the ball out of track bounds - it happened really often in my playthrough.
All that being said, I had fun with the game. It looks and sounds good and the tracks are interesting enough to keep me playing. I also appreciate the little details - the gun names and the cute little faces the enemies would make both made me smile. 10/10, would Overcompensate again. 😄
@manimal: Sorry to hear you had problems, you can always reset the current level by pressing Backspace :)
@travis-w-hendrix: Oh, the music bug, you're completely right. Forgot to fix it after all :I
@auxc: Thank you for your suggestions! The Overcompensator is my favourite too :P. I really like your idea of bumping enemies away with the ball, that would be hilarous :). And yeah, the physics were a little challenging, I think the tracks need to be a bit wider as well, the player faster... we might improve upon this jam :)
Really fun theme with this one, super nice.
I think there could be a couple of bug-related improvements to be done (some issues where the ball wouldn't be hit when you release left mouse and right mouse around the same time, physics interactions between the player and the ball etc.) but these are really only minor. Thanks for making such a fun game, really enjoyed it :)
Loved the aesthetics and the music goes along perfectly!
The sooting and the golf combines really well giving all the action of FPS to golf.
Nice concept behind the mechanics. It's easy for the ball to bounce and get off-bounds so a little less power gauge could come on handy.
Loved this game =O)!
5/5
Imo it takes too much time for the ball to stop or reset tho, I would like it way more fast paced in a FPS game.
Love the aesthetics, they fit nicely to the gameplay and are really well done.
The graphics look great and the mechanics are well implemented; I also like the two genres you combined it's pretty unique, fits together nicely and is really fun to play.
Aside from a few physics-hiccups, the rather glitchy looking reflections (that fortunately fit the aesthetic) and the fact that one map didn't spawn for me, I really enjoyed this! Good job!
The fifth level has a similar problem, but I managed to beat it on the second try.
I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.
I hope you continue with the project.
