Punk at the Opera by rjhelms

[raw]
made by rjhelms for LD 41 (COMPO)

Oh man, after a night getting black out drunk, you've woken up in the middle of a production of HMS Pinafore! There's only one thing left to do in this situation: fight your way out!

A side-scrolling beat-'em-up about the incompatibility of opera and the punk rock lifestyle.

Clear each screen, by defeating all of the opera performers. Prepare for the final showdown with Gilbert and Sullivan themselves!

Update - 2018-04-23 7:58pm EST

HTML5 build now available on itch.io. Also, minor bug-fix: when continuing or restarting from either end screen, the max player health was capped at 3 when it should have remained at 5. Literally a single-character change - although, on further consideration, it's probably a line of code that should have been removed entirely.

That was awesome! I finally won a game today! I loved the opera singers starting to sing...I think you can do more with that theme. I didn't understand the objects I was picking up, the hearts, or the thing about the bombs, so a little more tutorial or a pop-up hint or something would be good. The final screen didn't display long enough for me to read the whole thing. Great job getting this game completed!

@Serious07 @gamebuilder @Ripter Thank you kindly for playing, and for the kind words!

@jshaffer94247 Thanks! Overall I agree with you - a lot of the mechanics & items would do well to be explained somewhere. In the past I've been a big fan of introducing mechanics gradually and giving the player an opportunity to discover them, but this go-around it was enough of a scramble just to get this much in and playable in time!

That was a lot of fun to play!

Gilbert and Sullivan were challenging, but I managed to beat them on my first playthrough (it was close though).

Streets of Rage is one of my favourite games so I really enjoyed Punk at the Opera. The collisions on the boss fight is a little off though, I found myself losing a lot of health from colliding/being hit when I felt I shouldn't have, but that's my only criticism. Thanks for the fun!

Thanks @dnich013! I was definitely inspired by Streets of Rage with this one. Since the end of the compo, I've had some ideas about how I could have made the collisions work better, as I agree it's not quite right - but such is life during Ludum Dare!

Now, this was surprisingly fun! I played it all the way to the end. Maybe it was a bit too repetitious and too easy. Anyway, well done!

Nice game, fun to play, started off easy and had a nice progression to more challenging.

The graphics and aesthetic are really well done! It reminds me of something like Maniac Mansion or other early Lucas Arts games, which is definitely a compliment. I also appreciate your interpretation of two incompatible genres, the humor really sells it! The gameplay itself is also fine, though I had some difficulties wrapping my head around how the hitboxes worked. It being psuedo-grid based was actually kind of an interesting decision I feel.

Nice! The music is great, and I like your interpretation of the theme. The controls could feel
a little wonky at times (even using my xbox controller) but it will still fun to play

Gameplay is simple but fun and satisfying. Looks and sounds good and has a sense of progression. Good entry!

It's strangely satisfying to punch those sailors. And there's level progression too! I wouldn't enjoy it for very long though, but for a few minutes it's pretty fun, so the amount of levels is just right. And that is good for an LD game. To me it felt a bit random whether I would be hit or not, but that may be just because I'm lousy at games like this. In the end I just started jumping around and hitting every opponent at once. I like the MIDI-sounding punkish music.
