The Waiting Room by Rayne

[raw]
made by Rayne for LD 41 (JAM)

Wait! Don't click away. This game has more than 24 hours of gameplay. In the game "The Waiting Room" we wanted to mix a text adventure with an idler; getting literally a game where you have to idle. This game was made by Martin Isla and Matias Paredes for the Ludum Dare 41 in roughly 50 hours with minor inconveniences. I want to say it's the first part of many more and better projects.

You can skip some dialogues with any key. Open only 0The Waiting Room.exe file. You just have to wait! ⏳⏳⏳

Very interesting concept :)
Really nice that you complemented the text with sound, I think you could make something good with this concept (with some less waiting perhaps ;)). Not sure how it is related to the theme though.

Checked on it once or twice since I opened this game earlier today. Still waiting. In this respect I suppose the design is a resounding success and an interesting diversion from the usual, quick-fire popcorn-type games. I want to know what happens next, so I'm leaving this on. Intriguing!

@TheM Thanks a lot!
Text games usually tend to be interactive to compensate its absence of graphics; idlers tend to be slow but dynamic. I thought both of them were pretty contradictory, so hence the game!

Interesting idea! I like that waiting is literally the main mechanic in this game. The audio is a nice touch that helps to set the mood.

You wasted a huge chance here by not making this game in Godot. ^^

It's Argentinian like me ;)
Juan Alpaca is a great influence here in the industry.
I'm a bad programmer, but I could try,

@Q-ro Thanks a lot! I really liked what you said.
It's a concept I was trying to use for a while, still looking for it to be more interactive.

Original idea!
I only had to wait a little longer so I guess I lost my patience to quickly with this.
Thanks for the experience though.

If you want to tryout something alot more stressfull( more like quick-fire popcorn-type @Darby Costello), please try our contribution;

@Bhavin @Freebo @bhavesh_tiwari As a little hint. Something DOES happen exactly 10 minutes after the music stops. And then something happens 10 minutes later and... Well, I'll leave it up to you! :yum:
Thanks for the comments and ratings!
I'll definitely play your games

Probabky the only game you can play while playing another game while waiting for this game to progress. I fealt like i was being trolled.. in a good way :joy:

When the music stopped i felt a bit spooky too.

Love the idea! The text pauses are quite well coordinated, it's just perfect <3

But FUCK THIS SONG, DUDE

Maybe 24 hours is too much? Who knows. For me, I'm still waiting!

@Partida-Joel lol, "quick fire pop corn game", said someone before!

@joemid I can't believe you actually beat it. I'll respond to your email!

@elHombreBanana It is a lot indeed! I wanna make it more interactive, but I think that would mess up the mechanic of the game that is, well, um, waiting... if that makes sense.
The character doesn't really like the music either, so hey, you share that :yum:
Saludos!

__Fun__
Was I supposed to modify the code to get through this? I suppose not. Sending you an email now feels like cheating so lets not do that. Anyways this is not fun at all. Off all skills I lack patience is probably the one I need the most. I'm also not that good at giving up. The idea however is pretty fun. A medium amount of points will be rewarded.

__Innovation__
Let's see. Waiting is not innovative. Yet teaching people like me how to wait might be. It is skill that will slowly be in contemporary society. Wait. This is not an essay for a philosophy course.

__Theme__
The waiting game + text/sound based? I guess the waiting game is incompatible with everything.

__Audio__
I didn't expect this to be there. Free points for that. The audio was decent, but annoying, as pointed out by the game.

__Humor__
I can't see the humor in waiting. I think. Maybe I do. Unsure. I guess you will have to hack the LD database to find out, just how I was going to hack your game. Not really the same way. Not at all actually. Ah well.

__Mood__
There was definitely emotion. And a long emptiness.

__Overall__
I'm not sure what to think of this. Well played.

Yeah I mean, what did I expect. There it is, waiting on the other monitor.

Upon hearing the theme I sweared someone's gonna make this combination as a joke. And what a bad joke it is.

After four days (I think? I lost track), I finally managed to finish this game - this was definitely worth the time!

![temp.png](///raw/31f/51/z/149f6.png)

I definitely enjoyed the experience (and the shock at the end when you suddenly hear the theme playing in the middle of a podcast), and I hope to see more games with experimental mechanics like this!

Interesting idea. These really are incompatible genres.
The lack of interaction privates the "game" part anyway.
Excellent experiment but i won't be waiting 24 hours LOL.
Congratulations on making something super original!
