Story

"In a world where Computers must defend themselves from the dangers of the real world, Computer-Man will be a moderately adequate hero for this task. Make sure he doesn't do anything stupid and save everyone!"

---------------------

How to play

Player and Enemies have a board which acts as their health. Attacks fill the board with a symbol on the column specified by the victim. You can choose where the enemy's attack's symbol will land by pressing 1, 2, 3, 4 or by clicking the desired column. your health.png

3 symbols in a row (horizontally, vertically or diagonally) are nullified

Attacking the enemy with a symbol will make them attack with that same symbol. This means that using the same attack may have no effect on the enemy and the enemy may have no effect on you.

The enemy's attack will remain a '?' until you attack them.

Be careful on where you'll make the enemy attacks land! You can see where your attack will land as their selected column will be highlighted. enemy health.png

this game have so much potential for multiplayer battles! But...
You have to explain your game mechanics better than that. Maybe more intuitive tutorial?

Anyway: This is very original idea, very fresh, very enjoyable. I love music and graphics and animations. Also its fun.

Very enjoyable

Cool game, i love the music and the goofy text :). Blummer that i cannot here the 'walking' music more because that one is cool!

Good job!

Thank you for your feedback! @stadoblech You're exactly right about the tutorial part. It was the last thing on my TODO list but I couldn't finish it in time and, as far as I know, adding a tutorial now would be breaking the rules. If I'm mistaken please let me know!

@ayxs Damn, I should have made the walking between fights longer :P

If more people enjoy my game I would love to continue working on it and bringing a multiplayer component as well.

I loved the art style, it was very unique. I was a bit confused on how to actually play the game though. As to your above question I believe that you could probably edit your post and add the instructions on there, that's how i've seen people do it without ingame tutorials or instructions. The taunt text was very funny lol

@josue Glad you liked it :>

I followed your advice and added instructions on the game page, I realize just now how complicated the game mechanics sound. Probably should have made it simpler, oh well.

I find this game quite fun! I really like the animation attacks, which are quite detailed and humorous for such a short timespan! I had great fun experimenting with the different attacks. But I have to say I found the symbols is confusing, and I didn't get it personally.

Ahh I couldn't be happier to read these comments! Thank you all so much for your beautiful feedback c:

Wish I had more time for a better tutorial :<

@fullmontis I'm sorry about the symbols confusion, if I'll have the chance to continue this game's development, I will certainly fix that by either using better-suited characters/icons.

Great gane in terms of staying true to the theme!

I learnt how to play the game very quickly just from playing

Minor criticism was the audio was abit samey here and there but it stayed true to the computer/digital mood you brought around.

Suggested feature to make the game abit more fun would be that when you predict the enemy's move and it removes 3 of the tiles on your side, build up a special meter to do a special attack of some kind that would add lots of tiles to the enemy side or remove tiles from your side.

Had alot of fun anyway, cheers

@ponchoguy Glad you had a good time :> I didn't have much time for the audio since there was a lot of programming to do for this, but I'll make sure to improve that if there'll be a better version. Also I like your idea, we planned to have some special attack added to the game and that sounds like a good way to introduce it! Thanks.

Nice game, artwork is really cool. Others said tutorial was a bit fast and not the best, but you outlined the rules well in the description - and the idea of how to play isn't too difficult to understand, so it's not a massive problem.
I don't really have anything bad to say. Reminds me of Cuphead some how, and it would probably be cool as a feature of a full game.

Thank you all for the glorious feedback, it really makes me super happy to know the things I make can be enjoyed by others. I try to prioritize the fun element in any game project I make, as I believe that's the essence of videogames.

If the artist Sophie didn't tag along last minute, you would have had something like this ![old_protagonist.png](///raw/a9a/c/z/df5e.png) or this ![old_protagonist_v2.png](///raw/a9a/c/z/df5f.png) so yeah, I'm really glad she decided to join me for this Ludum Dare ^^'' although without proper tools, turning the images digital was quite a pain, but worth it.

@rixium I'll have the artist know about your feedback! As for the tutorial, I relatively recently added a thorough description about the game's mechanics, there was nothing like that before so comments about it are probably from before I added such description. This said, I really hope to continue development and add a proper in-game tutorial.

@roy87 Thank you! I'm not on indiexpo though, should I make a page there? Let me know if/when you make a video about this by the way :>

Thank you :>

@eri0o Nice finishing move choice :^] and glad you enjoyed it!

@james-dunlap If there's something you'd like to know about the mechanics feel free to ask, I realize I did a fairly poor job introducing the player to them, I paid too much attention to little details and by the time I realized the importance of a tutorial it was too late.

#### *By the way, has any of you spotted the tiny secrets in the game's sprites? There may be something hidden in objects fired...*

### As a token of my gratitude, have some pre-digital artwork:

@Wolfo My biggest question would be how do I actually beat the enemies? I have been trying to empty out their grid. I'm guessing from watching the gif right above my comment, though, that maybe I was doing it backwards???
🎤 Wolfo
07. Dec 2017 · 00:47 UTC
@james-dunlap Yep, filling one of the enemy's columns will result in his death. Dumber enemies will barely switch their selected column, while smarter ones will try to avoid having their column filled as much as possible. Of course, in the future there'll be more intriguing AI which try to empty their own grid.

While emptying grids feels satisfying, it is something you should keep for yourself and avoid doing that on the enemy :P

This is a really interesting one! The choice of mechanics here are very interesting, very innovative and a really cool spin on the theme! The music, audio, and graphics are all on point, they mash together quite well and make for a unique personality for the game! While the mechanics aren't being taken to the limit of what they can do, that is totally understandable for a jam. That being said, i think with some more work this could be expanded into something awesome and fresh! Good job!

@josef21296 Hah you got me hoping 8 different people posted comments on my game x) Glad you liked it though c:

@georgebgreen Thank you! I really hope to get a chance to expand this game. I loved creating this and the mechanic was still work-in-progress as I made the game itself. I changed so many things during development, but I'm glad how it turned out, it leaves me way more options for when I'll continue development and make variations on the current system.

Very creative combat mechanics. Was a tiny bit slow paced at times but I could definitely see it being interesting with a couple more mechanics added. Really enjoyed the art style and crazy attack animations as well as the creative meanings you assigned to all the symbols, which really made it feel like more of a game.

Man, amazing, I really liked it alot. It's an interesting take on the theme and on the puzzle genre. Art style is really interesting, but can be irritating to understand the symbols sometimes. I didn't really understand at the beginning how to kill an enemy, it's not understandable in your description of the game, neither really in the tutorial. Would be interesting to understand what the order of the enemies attacking are. Other thing that I didn't understand in the beginning is that enemies attack with the symbol you attack with at the beignning. After I understood this the game mechanics actually are rather simple and quite enjoable for people who like these kind of puzzles. Maybe add some more training mobs in the beginning just so that people can understand it.

I enjoyed the time I played the game, and I understand the hard work needed to create something like this!. Our team also worked hard to create a game for the jam. You can check it out [here](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/jazzy-beats)! :whale:

Thank you all for your precious feedback! I truly appreciate it.

@robinhoodpt I tried your team's game out, and it's really quite amazing! Receiving compliments from someone who participated in making that masterpiece is quite nice indeed :>

I'm sorry about the mechanics inconvenience, as I previously explained I still didn't exactly have an idea of how the mechanics themselves should be, so I ended up taking more time than necessary trying to build a system I wasn't sure of myself. And you're right, it gets pretty easy once you figure it out, I plan to add some better AI, different NPC responses (not just imitating your attacks) and a proper tutorial with top priority.

Regarding the symbols, it'd be best to play the game at fullscreen mode, but a change in symbols is also planned, either a better font or straight out icons. They were mainly picked as an easy way to show players that there are 4 different pieces that can go in the grid.

Nice game :) I like arts and sounds ^^

I'had some difficulties to understand how to kill an enemy, I think the tutorial is not very clear, (or i'm just silly X) ). I was confusing at the first play, but after I really enjoy your game, clever gameplay mechanic, remind me a power-4 game :)

This is a super-cool game! The overall aesthetics were awesome! Great job!

The battles are cool. As other people, I had trouble understanding how to kill the enemies. After that, the game flowed quite well. I'm not sure about the difficulty: it was kind of easy to me to win. At the same time, however, each battle felt quite long. Maybe this could improve if you could attack several enemies at once?

All in all, the game is awesome, congrats! I stopped playing in the battle against 3 enemies not because I wasn't having fun, but only because I want to try more games.

By the way: I've found something you may want to fix: the game speed seems to be tied to the FPS. That means that if the game runs at a low framerate (which happened to me in the web version), the overall game will be slow (or at least the initial walking part was; not sure about the combats).

The main mechanic is interesting and at first it is fun and challenging to understand how it works. But it quickly become a little annoying because it is a little repetitive and the fight are too long and simple. But the sound, graphics and animation are all very good and make the game very enjoyable nonetheless ! I really
like the style of the graphics between the gameboy render and the handmade pencil animation. The sounds during the attacks are dynamic and the music is catchy ! Good job !

@vasco-rodrigues @falak @harusame @racso @edmond00 Thank you all so much for your feedback! I'm really happy to see people actually having fun playing our game, it fills me with joy.

@racso @edmond00 You're right, the battles are longer than they should be considering how simple the game's mechanic really is. I sadly didn't have time to introduce enough variations, but I really should spend some time even for an early concept of how varied the game can be with the mechanic's base logic in play.

I'm deeply sorry it annoyed/bored you, with the way the mechanic works now, it was the only way to actually add difficulty to the game, but it costed more than I hoped for. Still, I appreciate your feedback and will do my best to improve!

The mechanisms are very original for this type of game, I love it! And design! I love it too! I didn't realize that you only had to pass a column to kill a target, I thought at first that you had to fill them all.

Interesting turn based combat with the match 3 mechanic! The subpixel pixel rendering was also very interesting, I haven't seen something like that before. After figuring out the main mechanic it was pretty easy though, perhaps if the computer could manipulate your controls occasionally or have their own rules for their match 3 that you would have to work around. Keep up the good work!
